Challenge: Massive consolidation of unpredictable Windows Server 2012 workloads squeezes performance, scalability, and security demands, and creates a backup/restore dilemma. Need: Mixed workload support, and new efficiencies in performance and utilization while eliminating storage boundaries.

In todays virtual and cloud data centers, customers face unpredictability that causes resource planning constraints. With traditional storage solutions, you find yourself asking if adding a new Windows Server application will impact performance or security, or if you have enough capacity to deal with explosive growth. You are trying to find the right balance between cost and performance for your mission-critical and tier 1 data workloads without adding more complexity. Cloud-optimized storage architecture Built-in virtualization and wide striping in a storage array drive new efficiencies in both performance and utilization without compromising either. As a result, all system resourcesincluding disk drives, controllers, and cacheare utilized for all volumes. In addition, a scale-out storage architecture allows you to start small and grow as needed, adding new Windows Server applications and workloads affordably and non-disruptively. This eliminates stranded capacity, alleviates the performance concerns of running mixed workloads, enables a low entry price, and provides opportunity for massive and non-disruptive growth. Fast data transfers of large files Storage array support for the Windows Server capability to move large files (such as database or video files) and VMs directly between disks reduces host CPU and network resource consumption and offloads the file transfer to the storage array. Continuous availability across multiple sites Protecting against system downtime with automatic failover of application services and read/write enabling of remotely mirrored storage over metropolitan distances delivers continuous availability in a Windows Server environment. Storage integration with the CSV feature of Windows Server 2012 fully enables automatic failover of VMs in case of data center or component outages. Challenge: Diverse Windows Server 2012 workloads result in underutilized and over provisioned storage. Need: Storage efficiency thateliminates the need forover provisioning.

Storage inefficiencies can make your environment more complex and can run up costs. With traditional storage, this means that your organization is not only managing more storage than needed, but also paying to house, power and cool that unnecessary capacity. In addition, a complex Web of network cards, interconnects, cables and switches is required in virtual and cloud data centers to keep pace with the server-to-server and server-to-storage network traffic. However, these interconnects can lead to performance bottlenecks, higher costs, and complexity in building, maintaining, and securing your cloud at scale. Thin provisioning With traditional storage platforms, capacity is typically fully provisioned to accommodate anticipated application growth. In Windows Server 2012 environments, this can lead to over-provisioning, both to avoid the need to request additional storage too frequently and to ensure that capacity is readily available for new application requests. Thin provisioning is an end-to-end storage provisioning solution that requires planning for storage deployment and execution on both the host and client application. A host operating system thin provisioning feature serves as the interface between the thin provisioning-capable storage and the host server. With support for thin provisioning, the storage infrastructure and Windows Server 2012 together eliminate inefficiencies by ensuring that applications consume only what they need and by allowing virtual volume capacity to be allocated without actually committing physical storage up front. Storage tiering In Windows Server 2012 environments, different users have varying workloads. Tiered storage provides the flexibility to meet varied workload requirements while minimizing cost. This flexibility delivers consolidated, tiered application services as well as cost and performance optimization. Flat SAN architecture Flattening a complex multi-tier SAN infrastructure into a single-tier flat SAN, eliminates half of the SAN fabric cost and simplifies the storage infrastructure. HP Solution HP Converged Storage and Windows Server 2012 help improve storage efficiency and reduce SAN fabric cost, complexity, and bottlenecks. Heres how: HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning, Thin Conversion and Thin Persistence Software Startthin, get thin, and stay thin with HP 3PAR StoreServ thin technologies, which reduce capacity requirements by at least 50%1 and enable nearly 100% of unused space to be reclaimed by automatically and continuously freeing and reclaiming unused capacity. HP 3PAR StoreServ thin technologies also support Windows Server 2012 automatic reclamation of storage, resulting in automation of storage growth and shrinkage. HP 3PAR Adaptive Optimization Software Optimize storage cost and performance by non-disruptively converting data service levels at the sub-volume level across SSD, FC, and Nearline storage tiers, thereby delivering the right quality of service to the right data at the right time on a large scale. HP Virtual Connect for HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage With HP Virtual Connect Direct Attach FC, deploy a single-layer FC storage network and optimize your fabric management with 86% fewer parts, 55% lower latency and 2.5x faster FC storage provisioning. Set up zones with automated zoning capabilities in one click versus hours. Deploy efficiency and agility in cloud-scale with the industrys first flat SAN on HP 3PAR StoreServ by attaching 48 BladeSystem c7000 enclosures with HP ProLiant Gen8 server blades to support more than 25,000 VMs and run a real-world mix of applicationsall with zero dedicated SAN infrastructure.
