breakfast fellowships. Instead the outreach under the leadership of Alex and Lucille Mendoza concentrated on giving reliefs to people severely affected by the calamity. And so Bogos mother chapter, Mactan, held a special Breakfast in Bogo on December 15, 2013 as its culminating activity for the year. With our very own AMD Nelson and Baby Dauz as sharers, the day was made more special with more than 60 brothers and sisters from Mactan who came to distribute relief goods to the most affected Bogohanons.

Marriage rites in IGBO Tribe, Nigeria

My brother, mom, and me

The bride to be Lizzy at the traditional wedding

Leaving the Philippines on the 25th of December to attend wedding ceremonies of my brother Benedict, some people who saw the Facebook invitation were surprised about the two dates, 28th and 30 th. Here we even have three marriages, the first being the traditional or tribal, second is civil and the third is church marriage. In Nigeria every girl dreams of white wedding, traditional marriage (mamalaye) is a festivity done in the house of the parents of the bride to be, and it is done with lots of eating and drinking and dancing. The civil marriage is like marriage registration with the government marriage registry and a requirement before the church wedding. So on the 28 th of December my brother and our family and friends took off to the house of the bride Elizabeth to celebrate the traditional wine carrying. The day was filled with laughter and some traditional rites were perfumed with dances, during which money was prayed on the faces and heads of the bride and groom. Families of the couple were present and joined in their joy and festivity, I was there too as my brother was my only brother. We were there from 11.30am until 5pm before going back to our town more than three hours journey. When we came back the celebration continued in our place as some of our family members who could not travel with us came to welcome the new bride. Two days after, on the 30th of December by 11am, I officiated the wedding mass in the Cathedral with around 14 other priests, after the mass that was well attended by both families, we set out for the reception that lasted till 5pm. Before we left the venue, the mother of the bride and her family presented to me and my mother the gift they have for their daughter, among them are refrigerator, washing machine, cooking stove and lots of other items.

Chapter Heads New Years Message

As I ponder on the things that transpired on 2013 a lot of questions popped up on my mind which leads me to more questions that eventually give no answer at all rather brought me to confusion. Should life be like this? Morning of Dec. 30, I got a text message from my father that reads CH Guy and Eden Ceniza Dong yesterday was the Feast of the Holy Family, were you able to hear Mass? I believe thats your devotion. The Holy Family is at the entrance of your home. In a way it struck me because I may had sent reminder on that feast to the community but I had not given much attention on it until that message. Such religious icon has been with my family for over 13 years but have I made a truthful reflection why I placed it at the entrance of my home? I may have a complete family with growing respectful children but most likely far from being ideal. But as we can see almost all problems in our society boils down to the values of the families. As I reflect further I came to the realization that the family being the basic institution of our society plays the biggest role of what our society has become these days. Precisely reminding me why I bought the Holy Family icon to remind me to strive hard to rear a better family being a product of imperfect one. Being part of such society, may it be in our own family or the community in general, can we still expect to see a better one? I believe yes and it all depends on us. Like Mary and Joseph they question the calling of the Lord to be the bearer of the Savior due to the cultural norms at that time but eventually they acceded. Such situation came into being because our Lord wants us to see that we can be part of the needed societys change rather than an added burden. As we embark another year with much hope, I encourage everyone to take active role and ownership of our beloved 2 nd family, the BCBP. This year we will roll out activities that will lead us in the fulfillment of our commitments. All our plans would me meaningless if we will not take part on it similarly we cannot claim nor deny our biological family since we cannot be in this world if not because of them. The year ahead is full of uncertainties yet the promise of the Lord stands the same Come to me, all who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. A blessed and prosperous 2014.
Joy or misery is a choice we have to make daily. If we are busy being grateful, well have no time to be miserable.
