ronmental movement. Those of us in the older age category remember our country after the Second World War. We know how the industrial revolution did pollute the air, lakes and streams. There indeed was reason for concern. I remember living in Hamilton, Ohio in the mid-60s. Not far from where we lived was a steel manufacturing plant and a paper mill. On certain days, when the wind moved in the wrong direction, the smell was unbearable. On some occasions, the factories would discharge polluted air, so much so that my wife had to take the wash off the clothesline and wash it again. Today, most of those pollutants have ceased their operation or cleaned up their practices to protect the public and the environment. However, it is important to realize that this world is created by God; even though it sometimes seems like it is getting out of control, we can with full assurance say it will not. Why? Because the Bible says: While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not

gain, we need to remember that what we read in chapter 10 of the book of Zechariah is not based on a vision or an angel passing on Gods Word to the prophet, but that these are the direct words of God. The restoration of Judah, in particular, is the issue. The first verse speaks of rain, and that means life. When rain ceases, crops, animals and man will cease also. There is much talk about the environment in our days. Nations are coming together to decide what to do regarding planet Earth and the apparent change of climate. They argue and debate, hold meetings and conferences, and use the most sophisticated technological data to prove that man somehow interferes with the worlds climate. Subsequently, they are forced, based on their available science, to take certain steps to prevent a global catastrophe. From biblical perspectives, we know that man is totally dependent on Gods grace; in this case, for sending rain. Of course, we must admit that, in general, good things are to be accredited to the envi4

cease (Genesis 8:22). That is the final authoritative answer to the concern about our environment. Here in verse 1, man is asked not only to acknowledge Gods authority over the weather, but also to pray for rain. This is especially applicable to the land of Israel: it has thirsted for two millennia, and as result, the country became a semi-desert. With the return of the Jews to Israel, a reversal is slowly taking place. This is primarily done through technology. Nevertheless, that is not the final answer. For the land of Israel to accommodate all the Jews of the world, it needs to be more productive agriculturally, and that can only happen when Israel asks the Lord for the latter rain. For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd (verse 2). This stands in contrast to verse 1, where God invites the people to rely on Him. Here we see how they relied on idols, vanity, diviners and dreams. This also fits our modern, sophisticated, technology-based society. We seem to know everything, and can explain the world topographically and geographically. We know how it functions, but in the end, it is always exposed as being a lie, a false comfort. We have to keep in mind that the people of Israel were in dispersion for 2,000 years; indeed, they had no real shepherd. Those who seemed to be shepherds of the Jewish people often led them in the wrong direction: Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats (verses 3). Goats, according to Strongs Hebrew Dictionary, could be translated as leaders of the people. Instead of being led toward God, the people were led away from God to all sorts of prognosticators, who in the end did no good, but caused Israel to enter into even more trouble. So the Lord God begins to pronounce some mighty promises to the Jewish people: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle. Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together (verses 3-4). Here the tribe of Judah is identified to represent all of Israel. To understand this better, let us go back to the father of Israel, Jacob, who utters a specific prophecy about Judah: Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy fathers children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lions whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be (Genesis 49:8-10). Those are mighty words: salvation will come from Judah. Who is Shiloh, we may ask? It is the Messiah. This is confirmed in the last book of the Bible: And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof (Revelation 5:5).

Jacob prophesies that Judah will lead, Unto him shall the gathering of the people be. This is a two-fold promise: 1. The eleven tribes of the children of Israel would be identified by the name of Judah, i.e. Jews. This is clearly evidenced in the New Testament as well; for example, when we read in the book of Acts. The Apostle Peter is addressing the Jews in Jerusalem, and does not say, Let the house of Judah know, but rather, let all the house of Israel know assuredly (Acts 2:36). We know that the tribe of Judah included the tribes of Benjamin and Levi; they became part of Judah. Later, remnants of the ten rebellious tribes joined themselves to Judah as well. This is documented in 2 Chronicles 11:16: And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers. Furthermore, 2 Chronicles 15:9 reads: And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him. Therefore, the gathering of the people means that all the tribes of Israel became Jews. The second point of gathering the people means the nations. Here we should read Matthew 28:19: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. The Gentiles will be gathered to Israel according to Amos 9:12: That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this. In verse 4, we find the words, the corner. This is the CornerstoneJesus Christ the Lord. For claritys sake, let us read from the American Standard Version: From Him shall come forth the cornerstone, from Him the nail, from Him the battle bow, from Him every ruler together. He, the Lord, is the source of all things. Nail is also translated with tent peg. This symbolizes Israels habitation, a place of security. Isaiah 22:23 reads: And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his fathers house. The nail represents the economic system and the battle bow is a demonstration of His invincibility; He is the Victor for all eternity. From Him comes every oppressor, which is the political authority. All this will be visibly implemented when Jesus Christ establishes global dominion. About 2,000 years ago, Jesus said: All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. His Church is included: And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth (Revelation 5:10). There is going to be no opposition. Judah shall dominate: And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded (verse 5). If we are to understand these two verses chronologically, then God gave a mighty victory to the Jews before He brought them back to the land of Israel. From history, however, we know that the Jews were dispersed all over the world; they were rejected, despised, mistreated, and quite often killed. Yet this Scripture says they will be mighty

men, which tread down their enemiesthey shall fightthe riders on horses shall be confounded. These riders on horses represent the enemies; they will be put to shame. Many scholars apply this to the time when Israel shall be saved and the Jews will have a preeminent position among the people of the world. Such a spiritual application can be accepted. However, if we take this chapter and try to understand it in the full context, then we must see it from the perspective of Israels existence in the face of insurmountable difficulties throughout the centuries. For all practical purposes, the Jews should not exist. The fact that they have been so severely persecuted should have guaranteed their demise. In particular, just before the State of Israel was resurrected, over six million Jews were systematically and deliberately murdered during the reign of Hitlers Nazi Germany. Who would want to be a Jew after being so severely diminished? I think the normal result would be the non-existence of the Jew. In spite of those facts, however, the Jews have left a tremendous mark on the development of Europe and the world. Whether it is the arts, music, science, medicine, or politics, a rather lopsided number of Jews stand at the top. The contributions of the Jewish people toward the establishment of a civilized world can definitely be titled miraculous. Therefore, we must come to the conclusion that when it speaks of what seems to be a military victory, it is actually referring to the very survival and existence of the Jewish people throughout history. It is through nothing else but the I will of the eternal God. He will strengthen, He will save, He will bring again, and He will hear them. This is not limited to the house of Judah, but also includes the house of Joseph, a term used often to define the ten tribes of Israel. What is so remarkable is the fact that God is bringing the Jews back to their land, not by faith, but by action. From the original 37 signers of the Declaration of Independence, the overwhelming majority were communist educated, from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, etc. Three came from Germany, one from Denmark, one from Yemen, and one from Israel. One of the major issues relating to the Declaration of Independence was the objection to including the word God in the document. Wikipedia, under the Declaration of Independence of Israel, details this:
The second major issue was over the inclusion of God in the last section of the document, with the draft using the phrase, and placing our trust in the Almighty. The two rabbis, Shapira and Yehuda Leib Maimon, argued for its inclusion, saying that it could not be omitted, with Shapira supporting the wording God of Israel or the Almighty and Redeemer Israel. It was strongly opposed by Zisling, a member of the secularist Mapam. In the end the phrase Rock of Israel was used, which could be interpreted as either referring to God, or the land of Eretz Israel, Ben-Gurion saying, Each of us, in his own way, believes in the Rock of Israel as he conceives it. I should like to make one request: Dont let me put this phrase to a vote. Although its use was still opposed by Zisling, the phrase was accepted without a vote.

The driving force of the return of the Jewish people to the land of Israel was Zionism, not religion. The modern movement of Zionism was articulated by Theodor Herzl, who himself was considered an atheist. God works so differently than we think and imagine. No wonder He tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Reading chapter 36 in the book of Ezekiel, one notices that God first speaks to the land, the topographical area of Israel: But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel; for they are at hand to come (verse 8). It says in verse 11: And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. That surely reminds us of the words we read in verse 6: .they shall be as though I have not cast them off. Gods immeasurable grace is self-evident in the process of bringing the Jews back to the land of their fathers. And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD (Zechariah 10:7). Ephraim is also a collective name for the ten rebellious tribes of Israel. Again, the promise of full restoration is undeniable. This is certainly describing Israel in the 1,000-year Kingdom of Peace. This will be fulfilled after the Church has been taken out of the world. Then, seven years later, Jesus will literally and physically return to Israel, and from there make an end of all the nations of the world and rule in truth and righteousness. The Lords love for His people continues to be exemplified in verses 8-9: I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased. And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again. Again, we must keep in mind that these prophecies were written about 2,500 years ago, and are not limited to a certain time period only. While He speaks of the salvation in verse 8, he proclaims Israels dispersion throughout the world in verse 9. There is one specific item we must highlight, and that is, they shall remember me in far countries. That is the key to the keeping of the identity of the Jewish people throughout the millennia: whether servant or rich, whether communist, socialist or atheist, the Jew would always remember that he had a special relationship to the God of Israel. That was something no one could take away from the Jew. The I will of God is the power behind the return of the Jewish people from specific countries: I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them (verse 10). The last sentence, in particular, highlights todays development. A relatively small group of Israelis insist on taking possession of all of the land of Israel, which includes Judea and Samaria. The reason is simple: if all Jews from all

countries return to Israel, there will indeed not be enough room to accommodate them. Today, ALL nations of the world are united in denying the Jews the right to take possession of the Promised Land. No nation agrees to the clearly defined borders as given in Genesis 15:18: In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates. The nations, under the dominance of the god of this world, Satan, vehemently oppose Israels right to their own borders. That, in brief, is the center of the conflict in the Middle East. The whole world says NO to Israel. But the I will of God is irrevocable. The nations will be put to shame in their opposition to Israel. We must mention here again that Israel does not have allies, they do not have friends who stand with them. All nations unanimously agree that the Jews be permitted to live only in designated small areas of the Promised Land. Thats the most they will agree to Israels taking possession of. Israel has in the past, is today, and will in the future experience affliction, as is evident from verse 11, but we must note that this is accompanied by severe judgment upon two named countries, Syria and Egypt: And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. In the end, Israel will experience the fulfillment of the prophecy Moses uttered before he died: Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places (Deuteronomy 33:29). Never must we allow ourselves to think that our nation or any other nation is capable of helping Israel decisively or opposing Israel decisively. Gods eternal I will is the only decisive Word that will remain forever: And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD (verse 12). Before we occupy ourselves with the message, The Coming Muslim Invasion?, let us first read the following words from Revelation 12:12: Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. This Scripture distinguishes two categories of people in two different locations: those in heaven and those on earth. The first shall rejoice, the last will experience the great wrath.

And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life (Deuteronomy 28:64-66). cast out of their land and lived among the nations of the world for over 2,000 years. 2) Satan, through the hands of the Gentile world, tries desperately to destroy the Jewish people, because through them salvation came to the world. Jesus actually stated, Salvation is of the Jews. Therefore, it is not surprising that Israel is vehemently hated by the devil and the entire world of Gentiles. Let us read Revelation 12:13-14: And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. Who is this woman? It is Israel, the Jewish people. For claritys sake, let us also read verses 1, 2, and 5: And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be deliveredAnd she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. Thus we see, persecution of the Jewish people is documented in Scripture. The good news is that an escape is prepared for Israel: And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days (Revelation 12:6). The Church too shall suffer persecution. We see this documented at the very beginning of the church in Acts 8:1: And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. In chapter 11 verse 19, we read again: Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. Later in Romans 8:35, we have this statement, Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? In 2 Timothy 3:12, we read, Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. The Apostle Paul makes it clear that suffering, persecution, and tribulation are part of the life experience of a true believer in Jesus Christ: And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience (Romans 5:3). The Church, however, is global and does not belong to any of the over 200 different nations on the globe. It stands to reason, therefore, that Satanthe enemy of our soulstries desperately to silence the testimony of the Church, and he does so through deception. When we read 2 Corinthians 11, we notice in verse 4 the following: For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. Here we see the false Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel is the real enemy in the Church. Unfortunately, the devil is rather successful in penetrating the Church with his false teachings. One of the most successful tactics he uses in our days is the alarm about the Muslim danger. The devil likes to divert the attention of the Church away from the Great Commission to preach the Gospel to all nations, to a group of people who teach another religion. Those of us who are old enough remember how the Church, particularly in the U.S.A., fought Soviet communism with all means available. Then it was atheism; today the great battle within Churchianity is against evolution, but all these battles are in vain, for the Bible says: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12).

While one may debate the pros and cons of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, one thing is crystal clear: global action to prevent terrorism is contributing progressively toward unity among the nations. A summary of the end of all nations is recorded in Daniel 2:44: And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. This simple fact demolishes any theories about a Muslim, American, Russian, Chinese, or any other world empire. They all come and they all go, but only Israel will remain.

Superpower Rome?
Rome, as already mentioned, is the last Gentile superpower. But Rome today is only a city and cannot be recognized as a world superpower. It is the capital city of Italy and world headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. Most, if not all, would agree that that institution could be considered a superpower. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, the USSR and the USA were recognized as the two great superpowers. Right now, China is developing into the next superpower of the world. But such definitions are temporary and shortsighted. For one thing, the Bible makes no provision for other Gentile superpowers but the four mentioned.

The World in Bible Prophecy

What is our position regarding these theories, and how do they relate to the Bible prophecy? First, we must realize that the Bible provides for the existence of only four Gentiles superpowers, namely Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. Therefore, let us analyze Rome from historical and biblical perspectives, over the span of the last 2,000 years. When Rome is mentioned, it is not limited to the city in Italy. Rome is much more. Historical records clearly confirm that virtually all European nations attained their highest glory when their nation was dominated by the Roman Empire. Roman laws are the foundation upon which civilized laws are established. Although Greece claims to be the originator of democracy, it was the Roman government that implemented a degree of democracy almost 2,000 years ago. Rome rightfully represents Europe and, as we will see in a moment, Europe represents the whole world. In several of our articles and books, we have emphasized that the European colonial masters sailed the oceans of the world and subdued the nations and continents. Only Europe had the knowledge and power to conquer the world. The prophet Daniel records the history of the times of the Gentiles, beginning with King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and ending with a diverse looking monster as the last kingdom of the Gentiles. Let us list some of those descriptions of the fourth and final Gentile empire: And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay (Daniel 2:40-43). In chapter 7, Daniel receives the first vision and describes the fourth beast in verse 7: After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. He was clearly told that These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth (Daniel 7:17). It is unmistakable that this is global. Then in verse 19, Daniel expresses his surprise and asks the question: Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet. The answer is given in verse 23: Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. These words are unmistakably clear: the last kingdom is diverse, and we are immediately reminded of the European Unions motto, United in Diversity. Also, this is not limited to Europe, but includes the whole earth. It is an error to look at certain nations, groups or unions and target certain areas or persons, declaring such and such to be the Antichrist or the Antichristian Empire. We take the Word of God literally. This last diverse kingdom shall devour the whole earth.

The Americas

Although many Arab countries have accumulated immense riches today, the population at large is still left out. Besides the much needed and desired oil, there is little of anything else coming from the Muslim world. The word poverty can be used to describe the bulk of these countries.
European principles, all speak European languages, and all have their roots in Europe. oceans, they did not cooperate, but clashed with one another. Innumerable wars between these European powers were the result. Because of this heated rivalry, Europe became fertile soil for new inventions and science, primarily for the purpose of destroying the competition; thus, the industrial revolution was born.

Africa
Looking to the South of Europe, we see the continent of Africa. Again, virtually all of the 53 nations were established or influenced by European colonial powers. Most nations can only communicate with each other by using European languages. Virtually all are founded upon the principles of Roman law. Much of Africa depends on technology from Europe. Even today, the largest contributor of assistance and foreign aid to underdeveloped nations is Europe.

Muslims Left Behind

While Europes intellectual capacity was literally exploding, the Muslim world became relatively insignificant. The only importance they attained was due to natural resources, primarily oil. Although many Arab countries have accumulated immense riches today, the population at large is still left out. Besides the much needed and desired oil, there is little of anything else coming from the Muslim world. The word poverty can be used to describe the bulk of these countries. Freedom only exists for the few and the rich. True democracy resulting in political freedom for the people is only a dream. The intellectual capacity of the Arab Muslim world is virtually nonexistent when compared with the European world. This is evident when one looks at the Nobel Prize recipients.

Asia
To the East of Europe lies Asia. Most of that continent was at one time or another subdued by European colonial powers. Todays conflict in Afghanistan is a clear example of former European dominion. Even Alexander the Great invaded the territory of todays Afghanistan.

Australia
The continent of Australia is part of the British Commonwealth. As late as in the 1960s, only Europeans were permitted to immigrate there. Even then, only a small number of people from Asia or Africa were accepted as potential immigrants. In summary, European influence and dominance of the worlds five continents is self-evident and requires no further documentation.

Brute Force of Non-Intellectuals

With this statement, we come to the actual context of the subject, The Coming Muslim Invasion? To invade, dominate and rule other people, a high level of collective intelligence of the invading nation is required. This is historically proven by the high level of intelligence of the former three Gentile superpowers: Babylon, Persia and Greece. I have an article from a German newspaper, the Rheinische Post. The headline of a specific article reads: SPD Leadership Protests Against Pro NRW. Here is the translation:
SPD Party Chief Sigmar Gabriel challenged Muslims to stay in Germany, saying, We need you. Without the staying power of the immigrants, our society will be less capable in the future. Gabriel opposed the anti-Islam declaration of the new far-right party, Pro NRW. He visited mosques in Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen, Mlheim, Essen and Bochum. He encouraged Muslims not to be intimidated by the threats of the new Pro NRW Party. Another leading SPD candidate, Hannelore Kraft, declared that she is proud of the excellent model behavior demonstrated between Germans and their Muslim neighbors in the city of Mlheim. Furthermore, Party Chief Gabriel, in communication with Muslims, promised a possible change of the present citizen rights. Immigrants (legal or illegal) who have lived in Germany 10 years or more should have the right to vote, regardless of their citizenship. He said that independent of citizenship, all people should have the right to vote where they live. Moreover, Gabriel insisted that schools, whether private or religious, should accept Mus-

Islam Versus Churchianity

Money, we all know, rules the world. Wilfred Hahn documented in Eternal Value Review, September 2005, that 60% of the worlds wealth is dominated by historically Christian countries, which make up only 10% of the worlds population. Christendom, based on Roman principles, is still dominating planet Earth. Hahn also writes that the average annual income in predominantly Muslim countries is $1,145, while the 45 high-income, historically Christian countries earn $27,033. In the financial world, Muslim nations barely account for 1% of the value of the world equity markets.

dren, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time (1 John 2:18). That message is about 2,000 years old. This reinforces the fact that the spirit of Antichrist was at work during those days, and is even more so in these last days. What is his aim? To unite the world politically, economically and religiously. That process has become more visible than ever before. When all is said and done, Revelation 13:8 will be fulfilled: And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him. The world will worship the image of the beast, the beast, the false prophet, and the dragon. but rather a level of integration to accommodate Unity in Diversity.

The Important Message

The most important part for Christians to realize is what we read in John 3:16: For God so loved the world. It does not say a certain group of people. It is God who has caused the Muslims to come to Europe and the Latinos to North America. There is a specific purpose for that: they must hear the liberating Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord! Allow for the possibility that because you were too comfortable to take the Gospel to foreign lands, the inhabitants of those lands are now coming to you! Dont attempt to hide behind Satans deception and say the Muslims are terrorists and the Latinos are ruining our country; that is following in the footsteps of the great deceiver. Rather, agree with the Word of God: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Receive them with open arms; it may be that one of them will be the last from among the Gentiles. Romans 11:25-26 proclaims, For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. We are happy to report that many Muslims are turning to the Lord and are becoming believers in Jesus. We deliberately do not mention names or places, which could endanger these new believers, but we can assuredly and with full confidence say that Jesus Christ is building His Church. He is using many of His faithful servants as tools in His hand to be messengers of the good news to those who are rejected, downtrodden and despised. Therefore, let us herald loud and clear that Jesus saves and He is coming again soon! (393)

One World Religion to Come

Does that mean there will be a one-world religion? Our answer is no. All religions will continue to operate within their own infrastructure. Catholics will not become Protestant, Muslims will not become Hindus, Buddhists will not become Christians, but they all will unitedly agree that Antichrist is God, and subsequently worship him.

Integration Possible?
In the meantime, when it comes to the issue of Muslim dominance in Europe, we can assuredly say it will not happen. Europe is quite capable of accommodating diversity. That is actually their motto, United in Diversity. From reports and testimonies, we learn that the process of integrating Muslims into the various European nations is well on its way. Of course, there will always be a degree of separation, as for example in the United States: only Europeans are considered unqualified Americans. If you are of African descent, you are classified as African-American. Such is also the case if your ancestors come from Asia; you are defined as Asian American. Therefore, we may not expect full and equal integration of the nations and their religions,

First Thessalonians 5:1-11 continues the teaching with regard to prophetic events. The doctrine of the rapture was introduced exhaustively in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. First Thessalonians 5:1-11 continues the discussion of prophetic events; therefore, in verses 1-3, Scripture states that the church had no need of anything to be written to them with regard to the times and epochs. The reason for this statement is given in verse 2: the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night, which means it will result in sudden destruction upon unbelievers (5:3).

nly two of the first eleven verses of 1 Thessalonians 5 were written concerning unbelievers. The two verses were recorded to emphasize the contrast between the blessed hope of the believer as compared to the destruction that is to come upon the unbeliever. The contrast is especially encouraging in verse 9: For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. The majority of the focus of 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, therefore, is upon

AWAKE OR SLEEPING
First Thessalonians 5:10 reads, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Perhaps most commentators, including theological dictionaries and lexicons, will state that Pauls words in verse 10 (whether we are

awake or asleep) is a reference to sleep as death, but such meaning does not correspond to the context. The entire context of 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 is focused upon watching so that the Day of the Lord does not come as a thief in the night. For the unbeliever, the Day of the Lord brings destruction; it comes unexpected upon them, as a thief in the night. The believer is to be watching and waiting for the return of the Lord. A different Greek word was used in verse 10 than the word used in 1 Thessalonians 4:13. The Greek word, koimaw, used in 1 Thessalonians 4:13, always means physical death. The verb, kaqeudw, used in 1 Thessalonians 5:10, is seldom used for death in biblical Greek. The correct interpretation should not be focused upon whether one is awake or deadwhether one is living or deadbut it should be whether one is awake or not awake. The Greek verb, kaqeudw, is used almost consistently to have the idea of watchfulness. Of course, the context of verse 10 is indeed an exhortation to watch. In other words, it concerns living believers, not those deceased, because only living believers can be watching and waiting. Moreover, such an understanding would correspond with the statement in verse 6 (so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober). The same Greek word, kaqeudw, is used in verse 6 and verse 10 (and also verse 7). Pauls contrast in this verse was not between the living and the dead. He stated, let us not sleep as others do. The exhortation is to be alert, sober-minded, and watching for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is, therefore, necessary to distinguish between the rapture and the second coming. The rapture is an event that could occur at any moment, and so the church is to be waiting and watching. The second coming, however, is preceded by seven years of tribulation. There are numerous signs and wonders that occur on the earth. It is impossible to catalog the rapture and second coming as one sin-

gle event. In the context of 1 Thessalonians 5, the Apostle Paul was teaching the rapture of the church. The statement in 1 Thessalonians 5:10 parallels that of 4:14 (For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus). How does one experience the rapture? One must be in Jesus. The exhortation is alertness. According to 1 Thessalonians 4:14 and 5:4-10, whether one is watching or not as a member of the church, they will be taken in the rapture. Our brethren and sisters in Christ who are not waiting and watching for the rapture will still be taken. The church will be transformed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and receive glorified bodies. If one compares the same thought to 1 Thessalonians 5, the exhortation is to be watching, but even if not, the believer will be taken because he or she is in Jesus. Does that mean it does not matter? Scripture would indicate that it does because one may experience loss of reward (cf. 1 Cor 3:15). There is the crown of righteousness given to all those who have loved His appearing (2 Tim 4:8).

WATCHING ANDWAITING
The imperative in verse 6 is to be alert and sober, which would be consistent with the teaching of a

pretribulational rapture. Such an imperative is the precise aspect of salvation that Paul stated in verse 9, For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. In these verses, the rapture is related to the time in the context. The context is the Day of the Lord, which is a time of judgment. Paul said that God has not appointed the church for that wrath. In Revelation 6, the very beginning of the tribulation witnesses the outpouring of Gods wrath. God, however, has not appointed the church for the wrath of the Day of the Lord. He has appointed the church unto salvation. A both/and statement is not used. God has not appointed the church unto salvation and wrathit is not both, but rather a contrast. He has not appointed the church to wrath, the wrath of the Day of the Lord; He has appointed the church unto salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ. There is an evident contrast. Therefore, verse 3 reads, While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. When would unbelievers be saying, Peace and safety? Would they speak such words at the midpoint of the tribulation? Would they speak such words at the end of the tribulation? Even in the beginning of the tribulation, Matthews Gospel prophesies there will be wars and rumors of wars (Matt 24:6). The Book of Revelation prophesies the four horsemen as the opening of the first four seals (Rev 6:1-8). Would this be the time that unbelievers are saying, Peace and safety? When would the unbelieving world speak such words? The fact that the rapture and the beginning of the Day of the Lord could occur at any moment must be understood pretribulationally. is teaching to be watching for the rapture because it could occur at any moment; and then, when the rapture occurs, what happens next is the Day of the Lord comes upon the unbelievers while they are saying, Peace and safety. In other words, the world leaders are seeking the time of peace and safety. They shout hurray, peace and safety, and then according to Scripture, the Day of the Lord comes upon them. It comes swiftly with destruction; they experience Gods wrath. If one remembers Y2K, there were Christians who believed in the need to stockpile, which never made sense. Many believers were confused during that time. However, there were many Bible teachers who believed the prognosticators were not correct, as a consequence of studying 1 Thessalonians 5. If one looks prophetically, it is not that the world collapses and then the Day of the Lord begins; it begins during a time of peace and safety. Those who were more careful in their teaching did not believe that Y2K would be much of an issue, because the statements of speaking peace and safety contradicted those sentiments. Sudden destruction comes during a time of peace and safety; then, according to 2 Thessalonians 2, those in unbelief cry for a world leader to solve the crisis and look to him as God. Of course, at that time he proclaims to be God, and requires all humanity to bear his mark and to worship his image. Scriptures seems to be indicating that things will not become worse in the world, but better. It does not mean that

there are not going to be challenges, such as currently, but things will generally progress to a time of delusional peace and safety. Prior to the coming of the Lord is a time of peace and safety; the world believes they do not need God. When the church is raptured, it does not seem that the majority of the world, at least at the beginning of the tribulation, will be concerned. It is then that God outpours His wrath. Therefore, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 is referring to the rapture as preceding the tribulation. God has not appointed the church to that time of wrath, but to salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. The church is to be watching and waiting, which only makes sense if the pretribulational rapture is true. If one is a posttribulationalist, he would be watching and waiting for the Antichrist, then experience the seven years of tribulation, and finally, the rapture and second coming would occur as a single event. However, this is not the teaching of Scripture. The only means of making sense of 1 Thessalonians 5:111 is a pretribulational rapture, prior to the Day of the Lord, which is the outpouring of Gods wrath. Therefore, the church is to be watching and waiting, as the rapture could occur at any moment, because God has destined the church for obtaining salvation. Consequently, verse 11 reads, Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

COMFORT ONE ANOTHER

If Paul taught that the church would endure seven years of tribulation, it does not seem possible to encourage one another, as 1 Thessalonians 4:18 also states. How could there be comfort? Most of those reading Midnight Call and their believing family members and friends would die at the hands of Antichrist. Therefore, one must understand two different comings of the Lord: for His church, and then coming in judgment with His church. It is similar as with the first and second coming of Christ. One could not understand everything prophesied with regard to a suffering and reigning Messiah as one event. The disciples and apostles struggled to un-

derstand the comings because they believed correctly that Jesus is truly Messiah, but were confused because He did not establish His reign at the first coming. Now that more than two thousand years of church history have elapsed, it is understandable that Christ came once and will return again to establish His kingdom. It is impossible for all the prophecies concerning Messiah to be fulfilled in one coming. However, the disciples struggled to understand the distinctions between the first and second coming of Messiah. The distinction between the first and second coming establishes an example for the rapture and second coming. It is impossible to catalog all the prophecies with regard to the second coming of Christ as one event. Therefore, one must make a distinction between Christ coming for His church, then the outpouring of His wrath (the Day of the Lord), and finally His return with the saints to establish His kingdom on earth. The doctrine of the rapture is to be encouraging and should be taught to edify one another. At any moment, the Lord Jesus Christ could return for His church. It does not matter that the first century church read these prophecies and also expected the any moment coming of the Lord. The rapture was as imminent then as it is currently. The rapture will occur for one generation, as Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 15. There will be a generation who will not experience death. Apparently, the Thessalonians were encouraging and edifying one another. Paul wrote in verse 11, just as you are also doing; therefore, continue doing this, continue to encourage one another. The context of this letter demonstrates that the Thessalonians were confused; they thought that because of the persecution they were experiencing, they were in the Day of the Lord, and Paul taught them otherwise. Indeed, they were experiencing afflictions, difficulties and persecutions, but they were not in the tribulation period. Paul then provided very explicit details teaching that the church would not enter into that period, but would be

taken by the Lord Jesus Christ prior to the beginning of the tribulation and the outpouring of Gods wrath.

DOCTRINE AND PRACTICE

Scripture almost always provides doctrine first, and then gives the exhortation and application of that doctrine. In other words, if one seeks the application first, he or she will be confused. The first application that Paul addressed was the attitude of the Thessalonians toward their leaders. Verses 12-13 read, But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. The leaders mentioned in those verses were the elders in the Thessalonian churchpossibly deacons also, and maybe some others in positions, but certainly elders. Paul taught that his readers were to appreciate these leaders. The epistles are almost always written to the church leadersto the elders, the pastors, the shepherdswhich would reinforce the doctrine of plurality of eldership; there is not a single, elder-led church, but the witness of Scripture is always a plurality of elders. The listing here is not exhaustive, but representative, wherein Paul charged these believers to esteem their leaders very highly in love (5:13). It is easier to love some lead22

ers more than others, but Paul said not to make that distinction, but to demonstrate self-sacrificing love to all spiritual leadership. In verses 14-15, Paul indicated how believers should relate to one another. We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. All the believers were responsible to minister to one another. Those who would neglect their daily duties needed to be encouraged to take action. There may be some who, as stated in 5:14, were fainthearted, and tended to become discouraged or despondent more easily. Scripture teaches that they need encouragement to stimulate them to persevere. Those who had not yet learned to rely upon the Lord for their needs, as they should, needed special encouragement. Scripture teaches that above all, the church should be patient with one another and with all people. The church is to use their gifts to edify one another for the mutual benefit of the body; not to retaliate, but to do positive things to all people, which is a wonderful encouragement of how believers relate in peace not only with those who lead, but then also responding in peace toward one another. Jesus said, By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35). It is entirely dynamic to have a group of people of various income levels, races and nationalities, who all come together to worship the Lord, which is a powerful testimony. The unity that the church has in Christ Jesus is to be evident in the peace, care and concern that believers have toward one another. The exhortation is not divorced from the eschatological teaching. The exhortations focus upon living in such a manner that when the Lord returns, it will be a time of rejoicing, for one has been obedient to the exhortations and will be rewarded.

NORBERT LIETH is a graduate of Midnight Call Bible School in Montevideo/Uruguay. He has served as Midnight Calls missionary in several South American countries. He and his wife, Elke, and their four daughters reside in Switzerland. WILFRED HAHN is known for his writings and insights on present-day world economic and money trends, viewed from a Biblical perspective. Far East Asia Trends Today Part II: Topic of Bible Prophecy?

Will an Asian group of countries continue to gain strength, perhaps even eventually dominating world trade and geopolitics? Are the developments the world is witnessing in Asia today of prophetic significance? We continue our investigation of the sudden events playing out in this region and their potential endtime roles.

n Part I of this series, we concluded that, very reasonably, geopolitical and economic trends involving Asian today should be interpreted in terms of last day developments. Far East Asian countries are indeed mentioned in the Bible, and a group of these are certainly the subject of Bible prophecy. That said, we must be cautious in any speculations. The full extent of future developments in this regionspecifically their timing and detailremains hidden. Lets again test the validity of connecting a phenomenon that has oc-

curred only recently in history namely, the economic and geopolitical rise of a group of Asian countries with an endtime timeline of cosmic significance. Why? Many prophecy teachers over the centuries have made the error of connecting events occurring in their day to the literal last day events mentioned in the Bible. Countless times the events of the last days had been announced or allegorized erroneously. Are we making the same error? We will certainly need to proceed with caution. Therefore, lets briefly review the rationale for our conclusion

store us, that we may live in his presence (Hosea 6:2). As a day is as a thousand years (Psalm 90:4, 2 Peter 3:8), it is now well into the second half of the third day for the Jews. If we count from 606 BC, the time from which the servitude to Babylonia began, almost two-thirds of this third day has already passed. Given this reference point, we can be sure that the Tribulation will begin to unfold in 376 years or less (and also, before this the Rapture). That means that we indeed are living in the very last of the last days, even if God were to stretch out this timeline to the full three millennia allowed by Hoseas prophecy. Finally, we can observe whether developments in the Far East Asia region today dovetail with other prophesied events and trends for a last-day world. Does the rise of Asia this perhaps being related to the Kings of the Eastrefute or accentuate other endtime processes that are underway in the world? Of course, all of these additional considerations and tests are secondary and insufficient without any literal biblical support. Therefore, lets next set a foundation and investigate Scripture in these matters. Biblical References to Far East Asia The Bible is not silent about Far East Asia. Of course, all people of the world are contemplated in the general address of much of the prophetic literature of the Bible. However, there are several prophecies that clearly involve this region in a specific way. Firstly, revealing the most eastern nation mentioned in the Bible, China itself is mentioned in a prophetic context in Isaiah 49:12: Behold, these shall come from far; and, lo, these from the north

that events we see today definitely do fit into an endtime timeline. Why Asia Has Prophetic Involvement In the first place, we must of course inquire whether the Scriptures make any specific statements on this question in other words, shineth a light in a dark place (2 Peter 1:19). Any such enlightenment would alone be sufficient. And indeed, reference is made to Far East Asia in the apocalyptic literature of the Bible. We will shortly examine these references and their timeframe in more detail. Secondly, as a priori, we take the position that indeed we are living in the very last of the last days. We substantiate this view on the basis of Israelthe apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8), the very timepiece of Bible prophecy. This timepiece is back on the world scene, having again emerged as a nation after 5,000 years. Many last-day prophecies could not be fulfilled without this happening first. Therefore, we know that todays generation is the one that will see all these things happen (Matthew 24:34), and that the sudden trends of global significance taking place after 1948 should be considered telling. The phenomena today in Far East Asia definitely pass the test of endtime significance, according to our five last-day hallmarks outlined in Part I of this series. Further supporting the topical nature and timeliness of our subject, according to the Prophet Hosea, we know that we are in the very last of the last days most probably at the time where Christ is already at the door for his Church (Revelation 3:20). A mounted army of 200 million is not a development that could have occurred until at least some 2,000 years after Johns prophecies. While we cannot be certain as to the identity of the large army of mounted troops, there perhaps is implied an Asian connection, as the actions seem to be carried out from this region. Yet, Scripture is not conclusive on this point. While the four angels are released in Asia (at the Euphrates), the mounted troops could originate from anywhere in the world. Revelation 16:12 mentions yet another event that takes place in the vicinity of the Euphrates River.

Therefore, for the purpose of our topic, we will use the biblicallydefined border of the Euphrates as the boundary between the Far East and Middle East. With respect to the identity of the army mentioned in Revelation 9, there are a number of interpretations. While four angels are responsible for bringing about the killing of a third of mankind, it is mounted troops that appear to be the actual instrument of destruction. What seems not to be open to conjecture, however, is the number of the mounted troops200 million. Apostle John is sure of this figure, saying I heard their number. At the time that he received this vision on the island of Patmos, sometime around 9095 AD, the world had little need for such large numbers. Interestingly, whereas the account of the 2-million-strong army found in Revelation 9 occurs at the time of the sixth angel with the sixth trumpet, this verse provides an entirely different depiction, which occurs at a later time when the sixth angel pours out a sixth bowl of wrath. These are therefore entirely different events, though they could be related in some way. There is only one definite connection between themthe Euphrates River. And, as we learn from these verses, this important border for Israel will be breached when the Kings of the East go over to the west side of this river. Nothing more appears to be directly attributed to the Kings of the East anywhere in the Bible. While there are a number of specific references to Far East Asia in the

prophecies we have reviewed, the most clear of these is the reference to the Kings of the East which cross the Euphrates. Why will these kings do this? Just who might these kings represent? Aligning Trends in the World Today Undoubtedly, the Kings of the East will be the leaders of a number of countries in Far East Asianamely, nations on the east side of the Euphrates River. However, to this point in our discussion, we have only drawn attention to the sudden economic and geopolitical awakening of these countries during the past 60 years. Our outline in Part I established that these nations have come into a position of worldwide influence. We assert that this particular development is purposely coincidentnot an accidental coincidencewith many other epic and unprecedented worldwide developments. In addition to these sudden economic developments in Asia, there are other factors to be observed today that could align with some aspects prophesied in Revelation 9 and 16 about the Euphrates and regions east of this river. Fitting Asian Population Dynamics Women are missing in their millionsaborted, killed, neglected to death. In 1990 an Indian economist, Amartya Sen, put the number at 100 million; the toll is higher now. What does this quote from a recent Economist magazine article on gendercide have to do with Asia? Quite a bit, not to mention there being a likely prophetic connection. Let us explain. Firstly, just what is gendercide? The term was coined by the aforementioned economist and refers to the practice of killing baby girls in order to have more sons. It is an atrocity that has become epidemic in many Asian nations a horrible slaughter of human life. These heinous practices will surely not go unpunished, neither on earth nor in heaven. We can only speak here to its earthly repercussions. Normally, between 103 and 106 boys are born for every 100 girls. This ratio of slightly more boys has been stable over time. Yet, in many Asian nations this ratio has become sharply biased toward boys in the recent decade. For example, in China, the sex ratio for the generation born in 20002004 jumped to 124. By contrast, for the generation born between 1985 and 1989, this ratio was only 108 boys for every 100 girls (a little above average). A similar trend is evident in India, the second most populous nation in the world after China. Documented here is a recent and dramatic shift. Mostly, this has been the direct result of government-sponsored family planning policies. (Taiwan and China, for example. China is the top user of contraceptives in the world.3,4) Just what will be the consequences of this distortion in male births? They stand to be far-reaching. Today, Chinas army (the Peoples Liberation Army, or PLA) has a high number of recruits that are the single child in their family. Quoting Foreign Policy magazine, already in 2006 only-child soldiers made up more than one half of the PLA force, giving China the largest-ever military with a majority of only-children.5 With so many single, non-family-rooted men soon coming of military age in the future, this trend could move into rapid alignment with events prophesied in Revelation 9:14. He can remain hidden, or speak in different languages, or even appear to be sympathetic. At times he makes fun of me. But I'm a man who is happy in his work. While there was resistance and mistrust towards the concept of exorcism among some Catholics, Pope Benedict XVI has no such doubts, Father Amorth said. His Holiness believes wholeheartedly in the practice of exorcism. He has encouraged and praised our work, he added. The evil influence of Satan was evident in the highest ranks of the Catholic hierarchy, with cardinals who do not believe in Jesus and bishops who are linked to the demon, Father Amorth said. In a rare insight into the world of exorcism, the Italian priest told La Repubblica newspaper that the 1973 film The Exorcist gave a substantially exact impression of what it was like to be possessed by the Devil.

The Gospels record two types of casting out of devils. Of one we read in Matthew 7:22: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? Obviously, these are false workers who are part of the devils camouflaged helpers. Jesus answers them in the next verse: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (verse 23). In

the next chapter, we see Jesus casting out the evil spirits: When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick (Matthew 8:16). Note the distinct difference between this and the Vaticans exorcist: the person possessed had to be physically restrained by half a dozen people. Jesus did not touch a possessed person, but cast out the spirits with His word. In the same chapter, Jesus gives permission for the demons to enter a herd of swine (see verse 32). 3829

Volcano ash can wreck jet engines, poison freshwater lakes and damage lungs. But it helps fertilize oceans, volcano researchers and marine chemists say.
About 30 percent of the oceans are what scientists call iron-limitedrich in many nutrients but missing iron, a crucial trace element for plants. Once the microscopic marine plants known as phytoplankton run out of iron, they cant grow any more. Sprinkling the ocean with all that volcanic ash, which is really shards of glass rich in iron and other minerals, releases that limit. With more iron, the phytoplankton start growing. More phytoplankton means more food for animals up the marine food chain.

The phytoplankton also pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, using the gas to make energy. Since carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, this could help reduce rates of global warming, researchers theorize. A study published in the journal Geology, showed that ash from Hekla, one of Icelands most active volcanoes, releases phosphate, iron, silica and manganese into the ocean quickly when exposed to seawaterfast enough, the authors said, for plant life to take immediate advantage of the nutrients. A 2007 study published in Geophysical Research Letters directly tested the effect of ash from volcano eruptions in Costa Rica, Japan and Alaska on samples of phytoplankton grown in the laboratory. The scientists found that levels of chlorophyll, a key plant pigment, nearly tripled in their samples an indication that the plants were growing much more vigorously than non-fertilized samples. Ash spewed out of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was less than one-fiftieth of what was put out by Mount Pinatubo in the early 1990s and was dispersed widely, said volcano researcher Thorvaldur Thordarson of the University of Edinburgh. Farmers directly affected by the fallout are going through hard times at the moment because their fields are all covered in ash, added Thordarson, hours after collecting ash a few miles from the base of the volcano. But the nutrient-rich dust could fertilize the farmers crops as early as this summer, he added. In the end, he said, they might get a better harvest.

Children Population at New Record Low

Japan had fewer youngsters celebrating Childrens Day for the 29th straight year, highlighting concerns that the country may face difficulty finding enough workers and taxpayers to support a rapidly aging population.
The number of children under age 15 as of April has fallen to 16.9 million, down 190,000 from a year earlier, according to an annual report published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to mark the national holiday. The proportion of children in Japan has also kept declining for 36 straight years to about 13 percent of the countrys population of 127 million. The elderly population is rapidly swelling. The number of those aged 65 or older has grown to 23 percent of Japans population from about 5 percent 60 years ago and is still on the rise. Children accounted for more than one-third of the national population in 1950. The demographic trend, fueled by low birthrates and longer life expectancies, adds to concerns over Japans labor shortage, declining tax income and overburdened public pension system. Japan has the lowest percentage of children among 27 countries with populations of more than 40 million, trailing Germany at 13.6 percent and Italy's 14 percent. Ethiopia had the highest proportion of youth population at 45 percent, the ministry report said. Government efforts to buoy the birthrate have had little success. Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyamas government recently launched a payout program for families with children through junior high school to encourage women to have more babies and help consumer spending. Tokyo has also stepped up programs that encourage the elderly to stay active and working, and introduced a new health insurance system last year to deal with ballooning medical costs for people 75 or older.

Renault-Daimler Make Plans to Share US Production

The hookup of Renault, Nissan and Daimler may eventually bring production sharing at U.S. plants, but evidence of the alliance will not be immediately obvious to U.S. consumers, leaders of the companies said.
Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of Daimler, and Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault and Nissan, indicated there are no plans to alter their U.S. dealerships as a result of the alliance announced in Japan and Europe earlier. As Nissan has a number of plants in the U.S. and so does Mercedes-Benz, we certainly can envision opportunities for some cross-sharing of existing capacities. This could apply to the light commercial vehicle segment, (or) to some engine manufacturing. We have no concrete plans yet, said Zetsche. The alliance will foster another model of Smart cars, a four-seater which, like the current two-seat Smart Fortwo, will be assembled in France, Zetsche said. The struggling Smart is owned by Daimler and its luxury brand Mercedes-Benz, and cars are sold exclusively in the U.S. market at Penske Automotive Group dealerships. About 15,000 Smart Fortwo models were sold in 2009 in the United States, down 40 percent from 2008. Daimlers relation with Penske will not change. We have not been looking into any downstream, specifically sales, activity across-theboard, and not for Smart either, said Zetsche regarding Renault-Nissan in the United States. So our relationship (with Penske) is totally independent with what we are announcing today, said Zetsche.

As the alliance matures, there will likely be more cooperative projects between Renault-Nissan and Daimler, said Zetsche. Developed World Leads in Same-Sex Marriage Laws

In March, the District of Columbia joined Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and New Hampshire in legalizing gay marriage.
Though its hard to generalize, there is definitely a movement toward expanded rights for gays in much of the world, says Scott Long of Human Rights Watch. Albania recently passed a law to protect gays against bias. A court in New Delhi, India, overturned that citys ban on consensual gay sex, and Nepal is expected to legalize same-sex marriage this year in hopes of attracting gay tourists. China opened its first state-sponsored gay bar in December, following a dramatic rise in the spread of HIV/AIDS among gay men. In fact, rates of new HIV infections are higher in countries with repressive laws against homosexuality, according to research from the United Nations agency on HIV/AIDS.

India began counting its billionplus population, with 2.5 million census-takers fanning out across the country to photograph and fingerprint citizens for a new database that will be used to issue its first national identity cards.
President Pratibha Patil joined the start of the 11-month exercise at her pink sandstone palace, which became the first household to be listed in the first phase of the census known as house-listing. Over the next six months, census-takers, or enumerators, will travel across more than

Priorities for Russia and Canada at present are issues related to investments, the introduction of new technologies and new agro-technical methods in agriculture, Russian First Vice Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, who has ended his working visit to Canada, told Itar-Tass.
At meetings with Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan we discussed these matters, he continued. Toward a More Democratic and Fair, Multilateral World

The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and PR China, the four major emerging economies, met at the BRIC Summit in Brasilia. The issues discussed were mainly economic, with the areas of energy and infrastructure standing out.
For Dmitry Medvedev, the main objective was to join together to pool ideas to continue the recovery after the collapse of the economic and banking system in recent years and draw a common plan to move forward, ensuring that this situation is never repeated. Our main objective today was to develop our cooperation in facing the challenges of the post economic crisis, supporting the international financial institutions and creating an international system which is in general more democratic and just, he declared at the Summit.

To the President of the Russian Federation, the summit was very interesting and productive. He considers that the BRIC bloc is becoming a global force capable making decisions affecting the international community. The BRIC format is fully developed, enabling us not only to coordinate our efforts but also take concrete decisions. Among the issues on the table for discussion was the role of the G20, the issue of energy security, climate change and the fight against terrorism, crime and drug trafficking. Praising the joint approach to the issues in focus, Dmitry Medvedev ends a journey that included the first visit of the Russian President to Argentina. In his meeting with the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, before the BRIC summit, Dmitry Medvedev signed documents on bilateral partnerships, which included the area of energy, transport and space. The documents were aimed at the participation of the Russian Federation in the project to build a nuclear power plant in Argentina, the combined use of the Russian global navigation system GLONASS and the supply of icebreakers and helicopters for the Argentine Antarctic expeditions.

On a more global note the discussions focused on the social and political integration of Latin America, cooperation between MERCOSUR, the Rio Group, UNASUR and the Russian Federation, and cultural ties. They ended the meeting with a joint statement on the UN role in crisis management and commitment to follow the principles of international law.

EU Ministers Agree to Fast-Track Single Sky

EU transport ministers agreed to fast-track Single European Sky measures aimed at a greater integration of national airspaces, following the recent disruption of air traffic due to the Icelandic ash cloud.
Under the decision, a European air network manager would be put in place before the end of this year in order to facilitate decision-making among the blocs 27 national authorities. The new manager would not preempt national sovereignty on opening or closing airspace, however, EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas said during a press conference, noting the philosophical question of relinquishing state powers to Brussels, which is always a sensitive matter among member states. It was never supposed to be a super-national authority, but a coordination mechanism. The final decision will still rest in the hands of member states, he said. The new body, which was initially scheduled to be in place by 1 January 2011, would help coordinate decisions among national air traffic managers. It could be based at Eurocontrol, the body currently pooling data and facilitating international flights in 38 European countries, including non-EU members Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the Balkan states. Brussels-based Eurocontrol welcomed the ministers decision to fast track the Single European Sky package, as well as measures aimed at establishing more accurate safety standards as to when volcanic ash makes it too dangerous to fly. The EUs own air safety agency (EASA), which has kept a low profile during the ash crisis, will also be bolstered and assume its new competences, particularly on air traffic management, before 2012.

Answer: Note carefully the words, for of such and as a little child.These statements are used to emphasize the importance of total trust and humility. We do not become children to be saved, but in childlike faith we become for as such and as a child. Based on my understanding of Scripture, there is no place which indicates that children will automatically go to heaven because they are children. Unfortunately, the opposite example can be seen during Noahs flood. Except for his family, all childrenthe infants, even the unbornperished. How God deals with these little ones, even the unborn, is not revealed in the Bible. Thus, we do well not to speculate on these issues.

Waiting for Jesus Dear Mr. Froese: I have been a long time subscriber to your magazine, and over time I have been blessed again and again. Thank you for your publications. I know you believe in a Pre-Tribulation Rapture. I did too, until about eight months ago, I saw something in the second chapter of 2 Thessalonians that made me wonder if I was thinking right. Here Paul was telling the Thessalonian Christians not to be concerned that the Rapture had already taken place. Then he specifically told them that two things would precede the gathering unto himself, which I understand as meaning the Rapture. Its not the gathering of the Jewish people to Israel, as this will be done by the angels. One thing is the falling away, and that I believe is and has been in progress in our present lifetime. The second item is the revelation of the man of sin. Further on in the next verses, it describes him so well, that there is absolutely no room for doubt about his identity. If this is so, how

could Dr. Ron Bigalke, in the March 2010 issue of Midnight Call say, However, nothing is stated to occur prior to the Rapture. Events may occur prior to the Rapture, but there are not any prophesied events that must occur. If the revelation of the Antichrist isnt a prophesied event, then I dont know what is. I now think that the revelation of the Antichrist will happen when he sets up his image in the temple, to be worshiped as God. It will certainly be to the Jewish people. Shortly after that happens, probably about the midpoint of the Trib period, but before the great wrath of God comes, the Lord has promised to spare us from wrath. This could be the time of the Rapture. I could be wrong as he might be revealed sooner, but his revelation must happen before the Rapture, as I see it. I have yet to see specific scripture that literally suggests a Pre-Trib Rapture. I know there is speculation concerning that, but that is all I have heard from various prophecy preachers. Im also sure you are very familiar with this chapter, and if Im wrong, please correct me. Thank you and God bless you and your ministry.

It is the day when Christ returns in great power and glory to Israel and when His feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives. In verse 5, the Apostle Paul asked, somewhat disappointed, Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? What things? The things about the Rapture. We read very plainly in verse 6: And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. The hindering element for the prince of darkness to reveal the son of perdition is the salt and the light on earth, which is the true Church indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Then in verse 7, the removal of the hindering element, that is, the salt and the light, is mentioned: For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. The true Church on earth is the hindering element for the powers of darkness to be fully revealed. The removal of the Church is the reason for the beginning of the Great Tribulation.

Answer: Our Lord Jesus Christ specifically stated that He would come in such an hour as ye think not. Plainly, we are admonished to wait for the Lord. If your understanding, however, is correct, then we need not to wait for the Lord, but first for the revealing of the Antichrist at the beginning of the Great Tribulation. So

Mark of the Beast Dear Editor, In the article on the Mark of the Beast in Revelation 13-14, I feel Midnights founder Dr. Wim Malgo (1922-1992) was really thought-provoking. I decided to do some research on it. I am 80 years old and my father

was a ministers son, and the church and study have been my life. I have Greek and Hebrew translations. I found Revelation has a mark and also a seal of God. Both are on the forehead and hands. Dr. Malgo stated forehead represents the intellect and hands manual labor. A mark on the forehead and action of the hand started in Genesis when Cain murdered his brother Abel. God put a mark on his forehead so anyone who came across him would know he was a man of sin (Genesis 4:15). In the New Testament, Gods seal on the forehead represents what controls our minds, and hands mean worship and obedience to whom or what. The whole book of Revelation shows Gods wrath on those who have the mark and who are not written in the Book of Life! He told the angel to hold off the destruction until he sealed His chosen in their minds (forehead) and actions (hand). Money is not the problem; also, buying and selling is not the problem. We live in a fallen (cursed) world ruled by Satan, the great deceiver. Everything we do, buy, sell or create comes from a fallen world. Even today, we Christians buy and sell with money with pagan symbols on it! What is it the Bible says you cannot buy and sell? Read Acts 8:9-24. Gods seal shows ownership and protection (2 Timothy 2:19; Ephesians 4:30). He knows who

are His, and Satan knows who are his! If Christians ran around with the Fathers name on their forehead and hands, and Satans followers with a 666 or name on theirs, everyone would know who was worshiping idols, a deceptive false Christ and his image or the God of the Bible. It isnt the money that is evil, it is what you buy and sell with it, which again leads to choice, free choice! Doesnt God say to the Christians: Do no fear or worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear? Does He not take care of the lilies of the field and birds of the air? His seal is for ownership and protection. So in Revelation, it is in the forehead and in the mind. (Our minds control our thoughts and actions are carried out by our hands.) The deception is who and what to worship and obey. It has to do with an image also. It was interesting when in your answer you allowed for the possibility of computer science and mind transfer. What about the new drugs, etc.? This is the only way I can see the whole world worshiping the Antichrist and the image. The only ones who will not be deceived are those whose names are written in the Lambs Book of Life and their minds (thoughts, worship and actions) sealed with the Fathers name; in other words, followers of Jesus Christ. With the help of Gods Holy Spirit to guide us, we Christians

are now living in the god of this worlds way of buying and selling, etc. Only God knows the heart and who are His children. Like it says in Matthew, let both grow together until the final harvest. God does not look on physical death as we do. Even Job said, hide me in the grave until thy wrath has passed. Notice our weapons: we are to fight this spiritual war with those listed in Ephesians 6:1018. We as Christians are to walk in faith, not by sight. The final harvest will soon be here.

Answer: In reading your letter, I do not see major contradictions relating to our basic understanding, particularly regarding the Mark of the Beast. What we do know is that it is manmade. The false prophet gives the order, saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast. This second beast puts in the program: And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed (Revelation 13:15). That is absolute religious dominance. Next comes the financial and economic dominance of all people on earth: And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name (verses 16-17).

Quite obviously, the Mark of the Beast is an imitation of the rebirth as documented in Ephesians 1:13: In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise. The believer is born again, then sealed with the Holy Spirit eternally. Satan seals his followers with the Mark of the Beast eternally. Indeed, you are correct. Our battle is not against flesh and blood; therefore, anyone we can identify is not the real enemy, but a candidate for salvation, for Gods promise is still valid, For God so loved the world.

Democracy Dear Mr. Froese: Recently I read the book, How Democracy Will Elect the Antichrist, written in the 1990s, I see. I believe your title is true, but the book seems to imply that whatever the election, its to be good. I disagree. The title implied hed be Antichrist, and so I believed and still do! But what you wrote disagrees with my thought. Im over 80 and have read my Bible since the 1960s, so I do know how it ends for all of us. I enjoy the Bible, but Im wondering if you wrote this book (the title) just for selling a bookit just doesnt harmonize with all the facts I see. The Apostle Paul spoke of Antichrist in his day too, and I really believe were in for it today. In a way, Ill agree that false democracy voted him in, if thats what you mean. But according to Bible prophecy, there are only two special nations. One is Israel, whose existence is based on the universe (see Jeremiah 31:35-36). The other nation is His Church. When you make a clear distinction between the world, Israel and the Church, you will better realize the temporary existence of this world as we know it. Since all people are sinners, their desire is to be ruled by the king of sinners, the Antichrist. Dont forget that the whole world lieth in wickedness. It makes no difference whether a country is ruled by democracy, socialism, dictatorship or monarchy. All are corrupt, all are sinful, and all will be judged unto destruction when the Lord returns to planet Earth. You are limiting your knowledge by your attempt to isolate the United States.

Calvinism Dear Brother Froese, Thank you for sending me the Midnight Call. I will soon be reading your book on the most frequently asked questions about prophecy. I am about done reading your book on Daniel. However, I have a little problem with something you said, and I dont think I want to continue receiving Midnight Call. Before I get started, I am keeping in mind that you are a man of God, a very brilliant man, and in your position, the anointed of the Lord. My prayer is that God forbid that I dishonor you in any way. I have learned much through the years of dealing in love and respect with those with whom we disagree. I put strong emphasis with Paul in Philippians chapter 1

Please bear with me while I spill my guts a little. Even since, as a young man, I heard about the doctrine of Calvinism, I put myself in the array of battle against it. Im just fed up with people making my God a senseless monster, not giving a flip about their so called non-elect going to hell, having God put babies in hell. (When we say today that a baby is not safe in the mothers womb, do we also have to say hes not safe in the hands of a loving, merciful, gracious, compassionate God either?) Im tired of people saying, God hates the sinner (non-elect of course) and such nonsense that makes John 3:16 look like a farce. If your words means what they sound like, then Id like to say, dear brother, that that takes the cake of anything Ive ever heard, and it also turns my stomach. Dave Hunt wrote a book refuting it titled, What Love Is This?a question Ive asked myself through the years and marveled at the coldness of Calvinism. Answering that question, one said to me, I cant have more compassion than my God. Well, whoop-de-do. Calvinism is cold, it pictures God as cold, and Im sorry, but it leaves me cold. I do stand with you 100 percent on rejecting the teaching of universalism. But what on earth does that have to do with your statement which your comment

on universalism immediately followed? The problem with Calvinism and many other beliefs or viewpoints, is people think they have to go to the direct opposite extreme to refute that teaching. Ive pastored, even started a church, attended and graduated from a Christian (Baptist) school. Ive studied the Bible the greater part of my life. I dont have to swallow the nonsense coming from good godly people in order to believe the Bible. I could read the Bible 1,000 years and never come up with some of this strange fire. In a recent issue, you gave an answer to the gentleman writer about Gods judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. I, too, thought it was about their sin of homosexuality, until you gave Gods answer, not to destroy the whole city if there were ten righteous people found there. Only Lot was righteous. Is that why Lots family and possessions were also spared, because of Lots righteousness? And why Lots wife, because she disobeyed God and also her husband, died? Indeed, we have a great responsibility walking among the filthy conversation of the wicked, to shine as lights, pointing to Jesus, and not as roaring lions who exhibit uncleanness and despise government.

No Armageddon? Dear Brother Froese, A few days ago, a relative of mine handed me a Christian magazine to read, containing the following advertisement:

The Revelation of Jesus Christ The book of Revelation is the revelation of Jesus Christ. It is not a mystery, its a revelation. It speaks more about past events than future ones. Blessed are those who read it and receive the revelation. Battle of Armageddon The Battle of Armageddon was fought at the Cross. It is not in the future, but it was Jesus victory over the kingdom of darkness. It was an amazing event, which occurred during the crucifixion.
