A MANIFESTATION OF SINCERE GRATITUDE

area in Bali, its likely youll see beautiful handcrafted canang on the ground with incense burning on it. And if youre strolling around your hotel grounds prior to breakfast, you might catch someone putting canang

out with ceremonial hand gestures, ending with a quick splashing of holy water. If youre wondering why the Balinese place canang under trees or on top of statues, do note that it is not the statues that are being worshipped but God and Gods power symbolized by the statue. The routine is actually a Balinese display of gratitude dedicated to the

presence of God and all parts of the universe that we live in. The word canang is derived from a word in the ancient Javanese language meaning betel. In earlier times, chewing betel leaves was a highly respected tradition, and as there was much social importance placed on betel, it was often served to guests. So even though the most

noticeable thing about canang are the beautiful owers arranged in the tray-like container crafted from young coconut leaf, the most important part is actually the betel, as canang is considered incomplete without it. Below are the elements necessary to make canang:

POROSAN
Porosan is made of betel, lime and areca nut wrapped in a young coconut leaf and tied with a small bamboo stick. The spiritual meaning of porosan is the power of God as creator, preserver and balancer. These three powers of God exist in every creature in this universe through the process of birth, growth and death.

Therefore, the leaf is one of the main parts of the canang.

FLOWERS
The spiritual meaning of the owers in the canang is sincerity. Red, yellow, blue and purple colored owers are needed the red owers represent Brahma (manifestation of God as creator), the yellow owers represent Wisnu (manifestation of God as preserver), and the blue and purple owers represent Siva (manifestation of God as balancer).

CEPER
This is a square tray measuring approximately 15 cm square made from young coconut leaves. The square shape symbolizes the four cardinal directions (North, West, East and South)

PLAWA
The leaf in the canang is a symbol of silence. Balinese Hindus believe that a moment of silence should be held in each prayer they conduct.

URASSARI
Urassari is made of two pieces of

The spiritual meaning of urassari is a form of a wish asked of God to always have peace on Earth. blue on the north and purple on the east side created is dedicated sincerely to the presence of God and all parts of the universe, it can function as a canang. For generations, the Hindus in Bali have been trained to make canang from scratch. However, a recent development is a growing preference for some people to buy pre-prepared canang due to day-today busyness and occupations. By Bayu Rahanatha

And nally, put sliced pandan leaves in the middle of the ower arrangement. Your canang is now ready to go!

OTHER MATERIALS
Other materials include rice, a slice of banana and a slice of sugar cane. These materials are placed on top of the tray and below the owers.

In situations where the circumstances do not allow for a complete canang to be made (for example, when there isnt any betel to be found in the neighborhood), it is okay to improvise. As long as what is

CRAFTSMANSHIP
Craftsmanship can be interpreted as the creativity and artistic value necessary to preserve this important aspect of Balinese Hindu culture.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE THE CANANG:

First, prepare the ceper (the

square tray made from the young coconut leaves)

Place the porosan on the tray Place the following ingredients on top of the porosan: rice, slice of banana and slice of sugar cane Place the urassari on top of those ingredients Arrange the owers with the following placement: red owers on the south side of the ceper, yellow owers on the west side,

LIFESTYLE&LEISURE

YOU ARE
IN BALI
Dos
Do apply sunscreen! Even if your goal is to show off your tan once youre back home, your painful sunburn might prevent you from ticking off some other things on your list such as enjoying water sports or getting a Balinese massage. Make sure to reapply frequently! Do rent a car if youre here with your family or with a group. It will be cheaper to rent a car with a driver for the day (or for just a few hours) compared to hailing cabs everywhere you go. Do watch your step, because unless youre in the BTDC area of Nusa Dua, often the sidewalks here are under construction, obstructed by parked vehicles, or are simply non-existent. Do get playful when bargaining for knick-knacks. Try batting your eyelashes, using silly gestures Do wear a helmet if you decide to hop on a motorbike or scooter. This is an absolute must! Do head to the Uluwatu area for the daily kecak performance. Besides the impressive dance, youll get to see the sunset and a majestic view (unless its raining, of course). Do make sure your belongings are safe. Keep your bag where you can see it and make sure your money, phone and ATM cards are hard to reach. It may seem like a pain to have to dig through your bag every time you need something, but thieves need only a minute to grab and go. Dont make it easy for them. Do go with the ow. Sometimes people are late, sometimes plans fall through, and sometimes things dont go your way. If something starts to annoy you, let it roll off your shoulders and try to laugh it off. You didnt y all the way out here just to get huffy when things dont go as planned! Do venture out of South Bali for the more untouched and pristine scenery. You can try Singaraja, Tulamben or even take a speedboat to Nusa Lembongan. and dont forget to smile, smile, smile! The key to getting what you want here is not force, but an easy-going and playful attitude. Do take advantage of the local delicacies. Indonesian cuisine, fresh fruit juices, and young coconut juice sipped straight out of the coconut with a straw divine! Do visit Kintamani Lake, and try biking back to Ubud once youve taken in the lake view. You wont regret it!

28

BALI&BEYOND JANUARY 2014

WELCOME TO PARADISE! WE GUARANTEE THERE WILL BE SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SMELLS HERE THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND (IN A GOOD WAY), BUT AS IS THE CASE WITH ANY NEW AND UNFAMILIAR PLACE, YOURE BOUND TO FIND SOME THINGS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND MAY BE FRUSTRATING. THIS IS WHY WEVE COMPILED SOME HANDY DANDY TIPS TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A PLEASANT VISIT TO THE ISLAND OF GODS. HOPEFULLY YOU FIND THEM USEFUL!

Donts
Dont get ustered if youre walking and it seems like every other car is honking at you. Its likely the honkers are taxi operators who are offering their services, and not drivers telling you to get out of the way. Dont get in a cab without rst making sure the driver turns on the meter and you tell them your destination. Blue Bird taxis almost always operate by the book, but its not always the case with the other brands. You dont want to end up paying 4x the actual rate (unless you dont mind this, of course). Dont say yes to shady Dont forget to be rm if youre not interested in purchasing something. Theres no need to get annoyed or angry, simply smile and decline rmly so that the seller gets the point. Dont forget to stay hydrated! Dont wear glasses or hats when youre visiting the monkey forest in Ubud or Sangeh. Its likely characters offering you marijuana. If the police catch you with it, you could get thrown in jail for life. Dont exchange your money at an unofcial moneychanger. If you cant tell whether the moneychanger is ofcial or not, youre better off just withdrawing from ATM machines to avoid getting scammed. Dont make a beeline for the street food, especially if its your rst time in Bali. As tempting as it may look, you need to ease yourself into the food here to avoid getting what is unofcially known as Bali Belly. Lets just say this is something that will make you a frequent visitor to the lavatory Dont underestimate the trafc here. It may look fun, romantic or exciting to cruise around the island on a scooter with a special someone, but the trafc circus here is not for the faint of heart. Especially dont attempt this if youve never ridden a motorbike before in your life. By Mutia Adisoma & Ariko Ahmad the monkeys will snatch them right off of you this includes cameras, cell phones and other shiny objects, so beware. Also, if you buy food at the entrance and the monkeys go for it, dont ght them off, just hand it over. Dont step on canang on the street. These are the beautiful forms of appreciation to God and the universe that the Balinese put out several times a day. Turn to page 24 in this issue to read more about it!

CANT GET ENOUGH

WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD WE CAN BE A FINICKY BUNCH AT BALI & BEYOND, MEANING WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING WE LIKE (FOR EXAMPLE MIND BLOWING FLAVORS OR CONSISTENT GOODNESS), WE STICK WITH IT. HERE ARE JUST A HANDFUL OF OUR GO-TO FOOD AND DRINK CHOICES ON THE ISLAND.
By Mutia Adisoma & Ariko Ahmad

ALCOHOL-FREE
When were feeling like having fun without the whole being intoxicated part, our mocktail of choice is denitely the Unidentied at Motel Mexicola. This unique concoction of fresh raspberries, lychee, pickled jalapeno and elderower syrup that is muddled and shaken with lemon soda, tastes so refreshing. We especially love the spicy kick from the jalapeno! www.motelmexicolabali.com

TO-DIE-FOR OCTOPUS
The BBQ Octopus at the Cuca Restaurant has a texture unlike any octopus weve ever had before (we didnt know it was possible for it to not be rubbery!). The tender octopus meat is served with a beautiful Asian gazpacho, ga fresh apple slices, cauliower and sweet corn. And its just jus one of the many fantastic tapas-style dishes being served by this new player in the Jimbaran area. Just a side sid note it looks like many of the chefs on the island isla are dining here on their days off. You dont do need much more proof than that! www www.cucaavor.com

FANTASTIC FOIE GRAS

Take chawanmushi, that wonderful Japanese egg custard dish, and then add foie gras and edamame beans. The result is a perfect blend of avors theres no need for anything sweet to balance out the richness of the foie gras. This dish is the brainchild of the W Balis Director of Cuisine Richard Miller, who spent time in Japan and has a great appreciation for their cuisine. www.wretreatbali.com

DAZZLING DISHWARE
You cant eat or drink this, but please allow us a moment to drool over the dishware at the Bene Restaurant. We just cant get over how pretty it is so colorful and in tune with the rustic-chic Italian theme. The beautiful Mediterranean color palate and patterns manage to look at once sophisticated and inviting, as if waving us into the interior of a warm home (where inevitably a welcoming hug would be awaiting us). www.sheratonbalikuta.com

THE CROISSANT
Croissants are arguably one of most popular pastries out there. But of all the bakeries on the island theres only one place where we get our croissants: Monsieur Spoon. When you bite into their croissants you get a perfect balance of ufness on the inside and crispy akiness on the outside. Monsieur Spoons croissants are so popular that theyre served at hotels and eateries from Seminyak all the way to Ubud. www.monsieurspoon.com

OXTAIL GETS A TWIST

While the original Indonesian oxtail soup has a savory and rather fatty broth, Mejekawis sop buntut is served with a light dashi broth. This IndoJapanese culinary creation is the brainchild of Ku De Tas Executive Chef Ben Cross, and it made us go gaga after the very rst bite. Its not just the broth that left us in awe the oxtail meat is so gorgeously tender that it practically melts in your mouth. We love it when spins on Indonesian favorites are done right! www.kudeta.net

CRAZY CONTAINER
Mama San is our go-to place for good cocktails, as they have a wide variety of unique, sexy and delicious tipples. When were looking to impress friends who are visiting the island, we order the Lychee Tifn Punch. Its a fresh, fruity and rather strong cocktail that comes in a multi-tiered tifn (the kind usually used as a lunchbox in Indonesia). Take a tier and enjoy sipping the sweet concoction through your straw. www.mamasanbali.com

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

You know those days when youre really hungry and youre craving something lling, relatively inexpensive and if possible healthy too? On those days we head to Taco Casa for their hearty eight-layer burrito. Filled with various kinds of vegetables, rice, dollops of fresh sour cream, guacamole and your choice of meat, it really hits the spot. Brunch is one of things we most look forward to on the weekends, and our team has some pretty big appetites, so large portions are a must. Thank goodness for Watercress and their Smashed Chats & Goats Cheese Stack (this usually comes with beautifully poached eggs but we tried it with scrambled once and it was just as good). Its delicious and fullling, not to mention theres a deal where you can get coffee, juice and a bowl of fresh fruit thrown in. Your taste buds and belly will certainly thank you! www.watercressbali.com

HERBAL REFRESHMENT
A common Indonesian tradition is drinking jamu, or herbal drinks, for the many health benets they bring. Although historically these concoctions havent always tasted so great, theres a new trend of mixing jamu with other ingredients to make refreshing drinks. Our favorite is the Green Tamarind (includes tamarind, mustard greens and lime) at Iboe, a stall in the Eat & Eat food court at Beachwalk. Its super delicious and its nutritious! www.jamuiboe.com

PROFILE&PORTRAIT

THE ITALIAN JOB

IN DECEMBER WE CHATTED WITH FABIOMASSIMO DISCOLI FROM THE FERRETTI GROUP, AN ITALIAN LUXURY YACHT COMPANY THAT PLANS TO MAKE WAVES IN INDONESIA.

Bali & Beyond (BB): Could you briey explain about the Ferretti Group, for those of our readers who are unfamiliar? Fabiomassimo Discoli (FD): Ferretti Group is a group of yacht brands in the luxury market, which involves the production, distribution and service of luxury yachts. The group itself was founded in 1968 by Norberto Ferretti

and since then has had several acquisitions to ll the demands of each yachting niche. This has made the group one of the major players in the market. Basically we sell toys for rich people who want to enjoy life in the open water. BB: What are the Ferretti Groups plans for Bali?

FD: Among our international [yachting] market in Indonesia, with special focus on Bali. We have recently strengthened an agreement with Dimitri Marina a company specically founded to cultivate the yachting industry in the country to create an exclusive distribution point for Ferretti. Also with Dimitri

strategies, we plan to develop the

Marina, we are going to develop infrastructure to support the industry, like a location where our customers can safely moor their boats and have them serviced. We think that Bali would be perfect for this kind of development. BB: Of the seven brands under the Ferretti Group, which ones do you plan to offer to customers here? And could you very briey explain the differences between those brands? FD: The brands that we are pushing to the Indonesian market are Ferretti (includes Ferretti Yachts, Ferretti Custom Line and Ferretti Navetta), Pershing, Riva and CRN. The differences between those brands are that Ferretti specializes in ybridge yachts that offer total luxury and comfort, Pershing is more about performance and speed (in a way, its the Lamborghini of the boats, but still with the comfort), and Riva is the Rolls Royce of the sea. Riva is super luxurious, features impeccable detailing and is one of the legendary brands in the yachting world. As for CRN, its the big shipyard that produces mega yachts and custom ships with lengths that go over 40 meters.

thousands of islands you have probably the most important island destination that is Bali. The second reason is that Indonesia today has the fastest economic growth among all the growing markets. And the third reason is the rich people of Indonesia. Once theyve satised their needs for houses, cars and jewelry, they are going to look at other, shall we call it, entertainment toys. So there will be a market for private jets, helicopters and yachts. BB: What do you think about the yachting scene in Indonesia in general? FD: Indonesia is still growing, so the nautical industry as well as the infrastructure are still in the process of development. It is now still at a very early stage, however there is big potential and there are signals that the yachting industry can be developed in Indonesia. Especially in Jakarta and Bali where already we have some early infrastructure. So our job, together with our partners and the government, will be to teach and explain how this industry can bring more wealth to the country. BB: Are there plans of yacht shows

we attended the rst-ever yacht show to be organized in Indonesia. It was in Jakarta at the Batavia Marina. We are also planning to attend next year. BB: We hear that some past customers of Ferretti yachts have included stars like Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren. Is there any way you could tell us some current celebrities who are fans of your boats? FD: Well, sadly we cannot name them as our clients have always asked us to respect their privacy. In fact, sometimes we dont even know who the real owner of the boat is because they will purchase our product under their companys name. But I can denitely tell you that our valuable and famous customers are not only movie stars, but also entrepreneurs as well as politicians. BB: In what ways do you think expanding the local luxury yachting industry will contribute to Bali? FD: For sure there will be a big contribution to Bali. The island is already known as a destination for natural beauty, relaxing lifestyle and luxury resorts. If we can create the proper infrastructure, it can denitely attract luxury yachts that usually travel all over the world. They will come and vacation here while having their boats restocked and serviced. Basically, the contribution will not only create more trafc for tourism through the sea, but also jobs and trading opportunities.

BB: What is it about Indonesia that makes it a prospective market for Ferretti? FD: There are three reasons. First is Indonesias geographical location and its natural environment being an archipelago. And amongst the

that are open to the public, in the way that luxury cars are often placed in public areas for general viewing? FD: Yes, and I can tell you that in June 2013, together with our appointed distributor Dimitri Marina,

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

The settings of some of Balis premier spas are almost as therapeutic as their divine treatments, but for breathtaking beauty the acclaimed Karma Spa within the uber-hip Karma Kandara reaches dizzying heights. Karma Spas series of rustic chic facilities come precariously perched along Uluwatus dramatic limestone cliffs on a center stage open-air ledge, 100 meters above the resorts white sand cove and their Karma Beach Club. The spa features a glass-walled, Infrared Detox Sauna and an open-air Himalayan Crystal Salt Water Regeneration Pool. Stroll along the pathway, passing tent pavilions sandwiched between the rainforest and white coral beach to Amanwanas outer edges. Here youll nd the aptly named Jungle Cove Spa, secluded in a jungle-fringed clearing on a private cove overlooking Amanwana Bay. Crude coral stone walls divide an outdoor shower and two massage beds, shaded by tamarind trees and sun umbrellas. ts the New Year, and although Im not prone to making New Years resolutions, I do like to take this time to reect on my experiences throughout the

previous year. The end of the year is always too hectic, and I nd I never have enough quiet time to think and reect appropriately. But the start of the year is the perfect opportunity to do this. The festivities have passed, I have a little time off, and the rainy season is in full swing in Bali, which makes spending time cozied up in a corner with a cup of hot tea feel like its not wasted time. Bali isnt luring me out of the house with her blue skies and warm seawater this time of the year is gray, wet and somewhat melancholy, but the upside to this is that its ever so slightly less chaotic.

Each experience has been a lesson for me to go with the ow, to roll

BEAUTIFUL CHAOS
Chaos isnt a word I ever associated with Bali prior to living here. My image of the island was a romanticized one, formed by a handful of happy family vacations as a child and two separate backpacking experiences in the Poppies area after graduating from college. During each trip I always had a lot of fun, and I was absolutely mesmerized by the sights, the smell of incense burning and the beautiful smiles on peoples faces. But in all honesty, Ive realized that living here in south Bali can be quite a chaotic experience. As is the case with most developing nations, the rules here are not black and white and we all seem to exist in some gray area, making things up as we go along and trying to get by as best as we can. Ive heard people say that there is beauty in the chaos, and I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. But chaos is chaos, and it can be stressful nonetheless. Im in awe of the business owners here that manage to maintain a certain amount of quality despite the mounting challenges. When things y out of left eld, they dont just duck out of the way. They lunge at the problem, capture it, and then somehow transform it into their next big moneymaker. Theyre ruthless but also genius, turning lemons into more than just lemonade.

with the punches, and to not let someones ignorance, racism or negative energy get me down.

THESE THINGS HAPPEN

This is why when unfortunate things happen to me, I remind myself that it does not make me special, nor does it give me the right to throw a pity party every other day. Bad things happen to everyone, and we cant control them but we can certainly control how we respond to each situation. This year I was in a car accident, got food poisoning, had my iPhone stolen, was bit by a neighbors dog (and had to get stitches and rabies shots), was threatened by the neighbor who owned that dog, had a visiting friend get scammed on Poppies Lane, was judged and insulted by someone I had just met on more than one occasion, and was discriminated against for not being foreign. These are just a few things that come to mind, and theres probably more that Im missing. But the point is that whether in paradise or not, life is hard. And no matter where you live in the world, sometimes people are just awful. Its like a quote I once found while perusing posts late at night on Instagram: Some people just need a high-ve. In the face. With a chair. Its rather silly and ironic, but isnt it so true?

To shrug off the bad experiences and grow stronger from them. To remember that there are people in this world without a sympathetic bone in their body, who would rather pick a ght than have a levelheaded conversation, much less care for those around them. I am thankful that I did not turn out like them. They say that karma comes back around quickly in Bali. And though I dont want to wish ill fate on anyone who has done me wrong, its kind of a reassuring feeling to think that what goes around comes around By Mutia Adisoma

FOTOFOLIO

COLORS OF PARADISE
For our rst FOTOFOLIO of 2014, we are featuring a selection of watercolor paintings from the solo exhibition Surviving the Dry by Balinese artist I Wayan Wirawan. These paintings were inspired by the contrast between the arid highlands around the coastal areas of North and East Bali that Wirawan discovered during an art-led journey. The exhibition is both a witness to the remarkable spirit of the coastal communities, as well as a criticism of the fact that surviving the dry is no longer about surviving arid conditions but about the survival of the soul that is worn out and deprived of nature due to modern day developments. Wirawans paintings are highly sought after in Indonesia and Australia; for inquiries email wirawanwayan@yahoo.com or call 08122703360.

To the contrary, the cozy establishment is dimly lit and the simple signage is pretty inconspicuous, but this more than sufces because the buzz about Mantra never seems to die down. And why would it? The interior, with its sofa in the corner, its wall covered with framed illustrations and its wooden tables and chairs with retro upholstery, is slightly reminiscent of the basement where the cool kids from That 70s Show used to hang out. The doors with chipping paint, the hanging mismatched vintage lamps and the old medicine bottles with fresh wildowers sticking out of them, are just a few of the charming details that make Mantra feel homey yet at the same time totally chic. Theres the charging of big waves like Laird Hamilton and Robby Naish do at Jaws-Peahi Hawaii, free styling like SUP World Champion Kai Lenny loves to do, or even marathon racing, which is done in the Hawaiian islands between Kiholo Bay and Mauna Lani.

Zealand. Its not like surng where you require waves at certain heights and the right direction of wind, nor is it like windsurng where you denitely need winds at a certain knot power, he said. You only need water!

Luca explained that if even when the waters at, riders can still do work by cruising long distances to give all the various muscle groups a workout. Then he added, The thrill is just to be able to ride, no matter if theres a wave or if its at. Flat water cruising? Its more fun than you might think! Sanur, where the waves break far out on the reef, is the perfect place for beginners to

SUP also takes its riders beyond wave riding, from Stand Up Paddling Yoga (see the article published in our July 2013 edition) to core-muscle group training to atwater racing. SUP has now become so popular that it has spread from the US to all corners of the globe, such as Canada, countries in Europe and of course here in Bali.

learn. First, basic knowledge of SUP tools and equipment are acquired on dry land, along with safety rules and the dos and donts. After a full tutorial youll have perfect at water at your disposal, so then its time to get your feet on the board and adjust yourself until you get your body positioning just right. Once youve got this all sorted out, cruise into the small breaking waves. Its a thrilling experience and I wager youll end up sticking with it for good. By Gino Andrias

uffs of tobacco smoke mingled with the scent of pigs inside the moist uma (home). It was a hot and sunny day, the kind where even the dense forest could not avert the heat.

The children had greeted us at the riverbank.

Naked and walking faithfully alongside us, they carried the small bags that we had brought. Some even held our hands on the walkway. Their chuckles clearly showed that the Mentawai people are friends. It was a warm sight to behold after the rather unpleasant ten-hour trip across the Mentawai Strait from Bungus Port in the middle of the night. The wooden boat had been forced to transport in excess of its capacity, to the extent that I had had to walk tiptoe to the toilet, zigzagging between the many boat passengers lying on the oor. My arrival here was not without reason; the literature and photographs of this jungle tribe had courted me. Even though it would only be four nights, at least I would be able to wander and experience it all rsthand. Surfers the world over acknowledge the Mentawai waters as one of the best surf locations in Indonesia, but what I wanted to see was the land that is home to one of the worlds oldest tattoo traditions.

ALAI LOITA!
Simalepek village was the starting point of the journey, the gateway to the interior of Siberut. Churches, mosques, schools, markets and government ofces are based here and the sound of sermons echo from the walls of the churches. Tattooed people passed me along the road, but they were all in modern apparel. I couldnt help but mutter, Is this the new Mentawai? The sun baked my skin through the traditional cap I wore as I rode a motorboat across the river bank towards Dorogog village. I passed many locals repairing their boats along the river shore. They often waved and shouted, Alai loita! (Welcome!). The uma I visited was considerably larger as compared to the other uma lining the river. In the back room the women arranged sago-lled bamboo stems in the replace and the savory aroma hung suspended in the air. It was here that we met a man named Aman Soromut, who some called Koki. Alai loita alai loita! he said, greeting us with tobacco on his lips.

towards him. He showed me the tattoos that adorned his wrinkled and oily skin. This is many, many ouch... Blood, blood and many cry, he said in broken English. Looking around the uma, I could see that only Koki and his wife had these traditional Mentawaian tattoos, while their son-in-law and grandchildren did not. A big question popped into my mind: Was the identity of the Mentawai people shifting? The Sipatiti, or traditional tattoo artists, have begun to do less and less of the noble task of embedding ink under skin. If things continue how they are, it is likely that Mentawaian tattoos will be extinct in 10 to 20 years from now. On other islands such as Pagai and Sipora, the number of Mentawaian tattoos are dwindling at an alarming level the

SOME LITERATURE HAS POINTED TO THE 1950S AS THE STARTING POINT FOR THE WANING OF THE TATTOO TRADITION IN MENTAWAI SOCIETY. DURING THIS ERA PEOPLE WERE FORCED TO CHOOSE ONE OF THE FIVE OFFICIAL RELIGIONS IN INDONESIA FOR THEIR CIVIL RECORDS.

THE TATTOOED SIKEREI

Koki is a Sikerei, a man who occupies a high social strata due to his ability to communicate and penetrate the astral dimension. The Sikerei are believed to bring healing and are often the ones to lead village rituals. Koki waved his hand, calling me

SECRET SERVICE

Quintessentially Lifestyle is a global members-only club with a 24-hour lifestyle concierge service for their members who lead busy lives. Founded in London in the year 2000, they are now in 65 cities around the world. In Asia Pacic alone the luxury concierge caters to members in Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney

From getting a car from one destination to another, laundry pick-up, fridge stocking and even meeting Angelina Jolie for dinner in L.A. the next weekend, you name it and they will take care of it for you. After experiencing their services rsthand during a visit to London, I can attest to how amazing they are. I needed only to call the designated number for a Quintessentially operator (who already knew my preferences) and tell him what I needed and when I needed it. They went above and beyond to get it, no matter how difcult or improbable.

At that time I needed a reservation at one of Londons hardest restaurants to get a table at, and they managed to do this for me within just hours. The services they give are not limited to just getting things for you. It can go as far as arranging proposal in the middle of Jakartas Hotel Indonesia roundabout, without you having to lift a nger! HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
