FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL. 10 NO.

9
September 2009

Welcome to this edition of Forest Information Update. One fire season ends and another begins. The
change of seasons is always an exciting time, full of expectations. This year it takes on more poignancy
as Australians prepare for another searing summer, Californians and the peoples of the Mediterranean
have been battling bushfires. Information and technology are key elements available in fighting bush fires
– not only for foresters but also for local and national authorities. A search finds any number of items and
articles regarding forest firefighting.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries about content or sponsorship. Kind regards, Mike
Smith, Editor and Director, Trade and Media Services Ltd.

. TRANSFORMING NDVI IMAGE - Zuze Dulanya writes: “I am doing soil erosion modeling using GIS
and Remote Sensing data using the SLEMSA model. I am wondering if there is a way how an NDVI
image can be transformed directly to corresponding rainfall interception values based on the vegetation
cover in the study area. Secondly I would also want to learn how one could derive the slope length using
a DEM.” Replies can be made via:
