Cold Weather Shelter Needs Volunteers

As reported by WZEP AM1460

How to Heat Your Room for 15 Cents a Day

Wanting to cut costs on the energy bill, especially now that temperatures are dropping for the season? Economics may be one reason to seek more sustainable energy sources, but this inventive way to heat the house is also purely fascinating. Journalist, YouTuber, and boat owner Dylan Winter created his DIY heater using tea lights and placed inside a bread tin and covered with two ceramic flowerpots. This creative system uses the scientific principles of convection heat transfer and, according to Winter, can heat his home for around 8 hours a day. His YouTube Channel KeepTurningLeft shows how the method works: The tea lights are first put into a bread loaf tin and covered with a small upside-down flower pot. The hole in the top of the upside-down pot is covered with the metal casing leftover from one of the tea lights. Then the pot is covered by a second, larger pot and the hole in the bigger flower pot is left uncovered. This system works because the candles produce gases full of heated particles that are captured and channeled through the pots. As hot gas particles are lighter than the air, they will rise up through the top into the colder area. What will then be caused is the cold air to fall into the warm areas and create a convection current; then heat is transferred from one pot to another, and then out of the hole. One does not need a huge amount of money to invest in this economical heating method, either. Winter began by buying 100 tea lights from Ikea for less than a dollar, a standard loaf tin, and two different sized flower pots. In the video it is shown four candles are used for the heating system. Sharing his invention with the world, Dylan explains that the heat from the candles warms the inside of the smaller flower pot, which becomes an inner core that gets very hot. As explained before, a convection of air is then created between the smaller and larger pots and this heated air comes out of the top of the homemade heater. When asked about his heater, he said: People have told me that judicious positioning of flowerpots help to make the heating more efficient. I did not believe it but it really does seem to work. You get a nice flow around the [pots] and it warms the room up. Youd be amazed. Dylan even uses the flowerpot method on his boats to conduct heat. Truly inspiring for those seeking to simplify, be more frugal with their dollar, and leave less waste, perhaps this system will warm many families this year as winter makes itself more present..

For some, the thought of a cold weather shelter when the temperature falls to freezing might be laughable if they come from the far north. For people around here who are not acclimated to cold weather and often do not have the facilities to handle cold weather, the need becomes very important. There is a cold weather shelter available, but needed volunteers are causing a problem. For a number of years the Matrix Community Outreach has worked with the American Red Cross to open a cold weather shelter when the temperature falls to freezing. Candy Nowling, managing director of the Matrix says many of their dedicated volunteers are no longer able to work the shelter. They are in dire need of men and women who can stay overnight. Nowling says they currently have no volunteers to work the shelter. The shelter is located in the DeFuniak Springs Community Center and is open on nights the temperature drops below 32 degrees. The shelter opens at 5:30pm and is open until 7:00am the following morning. Women volunteers are not allowed to stay in the shelter alone. Knowling says many of the families currently in need of the shelter have small children and desperately need help to have a warm place to sleep. While just below freezing might not be too cold for many, for those with no home, sleeping on the street or in a vehicle or for residents that have poorly insulated homes or a lack of heat, the shelter can mean a warm place. This can be especially important when the overall temperatures stay cool and the person does not have a way to warm up.

2014 Laws
2014 brings about 200 new laws to Florida. Many went into effect with the start of the new year. One that will affect a number of people in our area is the annual increase in the minimum wage. Floridas minimum hourly pay will be $7.93, an increase from $7.79. The federal minimum wage is $7.25. This annual increase is due to a voter approved amendment that ties the minimum wage to the Federal Consumer Price Index. HB 579 might be something for the City of DeFuniak Springs and other gas suppliers to look at. This is a new five-year state fuel-tax exemption for natural gas, as an incentive for companies to expand use of natural gas vehicles. The law also creates a fuel-tax framework for natural gas by 2019 that is similar to those for diesel fuel. Rebates of up to 50 percent of costs of converting certain vehicles to natural gas are available through the Natural Gas Fuel Fleet Vehicle Rebate Program. Any person selling retail natural gas fuels in Florida is now required to obtain a license from the Department of Revenue. DeFuniak Springs is in the process of setting up natural gas sales for vehicles. HB 7013: While the local Supervisors of Elections can stay at the current eight days, this law allows up to 14 days for early voting. The law also limits the length of some ballot wording for constitutional amendments. SB 1036: Young adults now have an option to stay in foster care until age 21. Children already in the foster care system have the option to stay in the program past the age of 18 under certain conditions: working at least 80 hours per month; completing high school, postsecondary or vocational educations; participating in job-training programs, or unable to work due to disabilities. State analysts found that allowing children to stay in the system until 21 will not cost any more, since many youths leaving foster care often become homeless, jobless or end up in jail.

Florida Department of Health in Walton County Announces Temporary Flu Vaccination Payment for Pregnant Medicaid Recipients WALTON COUNTY - The Florida Department of Health in Walton County announced that temporary payment has been authorized for CPT code 90686 for Medicaid recipients who are pregnant and age 21 and older. This step is being taken due to the increased impact that influenza infections are having on pregnant women and their babies in Florida. The Medicaid reimbursement rate will be the same rate for those vaccines that are covered for Medicaid recipients between the ages of 18-20, and will be effective for the time period beginning December 19, 2013 through March 31, 2014. The flu vaccine is the single best way to prevent flu and it is very important for pregnant women to receive the influenza vaccination, said Holly B. Holt, BSN, MSM, DOH-Walton Health Officer. We want to make sure that people are aware of this new opportunity for pregnant women to receive flu vaccination through Medicaid reimbursement. The Department of Health in Walton County recommends that all individuals six months of age and older receive the flu vaccination each year. It is especially important for pregnant women to be vaccinated due to the increased risk of complications associated with contracting the flu while pregnant. The flu vaccination is safe and will protect the mother, the unborn child, and will also help protect babies during the first months after birth. Additional flu prevention steps include washing your hands often, keeping your hands away from your face and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing and coughing. Symptoms of the flu include headache, fever, severe cough, runny nose or body aches. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see your primary care provider immediately for guidance on treatment. For more information on pregnant women and influenza, visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/ vaccine/pregnant.htm. It is important for you and your family members to get a flu vaccine every year. Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctors offices, clinics, health departments, retail stores, pharmacies, health centers, and by many employers and schools. Check with your physician, Florida Department of Health in Walton County or visit http:// www.floridahealth.gov/prevention-safety-and-wellness/fluprevention/locate-a-flu-shot.html to search for a location to receive a flu vaccine.

No. 1 Florida State beats No. 2 Auburn 34-31 to win national title
No. 2 Auburn wobbled the topranked Seminoles by jumping out to an 18-point lead in the first half, and then put Florida State on the brink of defeat for the first time this season. The Heisman Trophy winner led the Seminoles 80 yards in the final 79 seconds, flicking a 2-yard TD pass to Kelvin Benjamin to give No. 1 Florida State a 34-31 victory against Auburn in the last BCS championship game Monday night. "The last drive, that's a great way to cap off our season," Winston said. "That's the way we wanted to cap off our season." The Bowl Championship Series went out with a bang, too, with one of the best title games in its 16-year history, right there with Texas 41, USC 38 at the Rose Bowl in 2006. That night it was Vince Young leading the Longhorns and capping a comeback by scooting into the end zone with 19 seconds left. Now Winston is the Prince of Pasadena. Next season the BCS will be replaced by a fourteam playoff. Winston and the Seminoles should be contenders again after snapping the Southeastern Conference's seven-year national title streak. "The SEC is great football, I coached in that league for 13 years, I respect every bit of it," coach Jimbo Fisher said, "but there's some other folks in this country that can play some football, too."

First Friday Talks Leadership Special Olympics In Walton
As reported by WZEP AM1460 As reported by WZEP AM1460

The Mayors Post

Russ Barley Freeport Mayor Please send any and all comments to The Emerald_Star_News@hotmail.com

Leadership was the word of the day for the attendees of the Walton Area Chamber of Commerces First Friday Breakfast. The event was sponsored by Crime Stopper. It was noted the crime prevention reporting tool now offers rewards up to $3,000. Another added feature is the use of texting to submit an anonymous tip. Speaking on leadership were attorney Ginger Barry Boyd with the Chambers Leadership Walton, Walton Sheriff Mike Adkinson, Leadership Walton Mentee Wilmer Stafford and mentor Cory Godwin. Barry Boyd talked about Leadership Walton, the program through the Chamber. She said it helps provide training not normally provided by the business. Stafford talked about working with his mentor and the growth he has had. Godwin talked about being a mentor. he said leaders should: Think of others first; expect the best; accept responsibility; and act with courage. Godwin said, Everyone can lead. Sheriff Adkinson talked about vision, being flexible and communication. He said safety is part of the community. The sheriff talked about vision, saying a leader needs to be forward thinking in what you are to the community. He said a leader has to believe what you do, the decisions made, is done for the right reason. Adkinson explained how decisions he has made have been right, wrong and in between, but said when making them he believed they were the right thing to do. The sheriff also said a leader needs to have a flexible mind. He told the members they need to understand where the organization needs to be. Adkinson said Miramar Beachs needs are different that Darlingtons. He said this comes with managing the expectations of the customers. Adkinson also said communication starts internally, with the staff. He told the group not to forget their internal customers. He said those under a leader need to be able to talk and not simply give the answers they believe the boss wants to hear.

Walton County Special Olympics has been competing and winning for many years. In July 2011, Patty Douglass and Greg Floyd returned from the Athens 2011 World Summer Special Olympics in Greece. Douglass ended up with a bronze medal in the 5,000-meter race and in a 4-person, 100-meter relay race, and placed fourth in the 3,000-meter event. Floyds bocce team placed fourth, and he received a silver medal for the singles, and a bronze for the doubles. Our area recently lost Pat King and Big Ed Earls, two champions of the Special Olympians in Walton County. The program also needed a reorganization and to have the charter renewed. Now Kim Christopher has taken over as the Walton Director and says the competition and training has already begun with much more soon. Christopher, who works with both Walton and Okaloosa, says the state Special Olympic Committee cheered when asked for help in making sure Walton continues. Christopher says the new energy started with a management team made of parents. She says they are now certified in bowling, basketball and stand-up paddleboard. New coaches are being trained for track and field. She says the program is across Walton County with DeFuniak Springs, Freeport and south Walton as well at the rural areas providing over 400 athletes from 8-years-old up. Next fall they will even have a beginners training program for youth 2-7. Christopher says the athletes are the important part and what they want is how the program expands. She makes it clear this is not about the organization. With the Walton Special Olympics, the athletes will not have to use Okaloosa and will be able to stay in Walton. This, Christopher says, gives them an identity. There are two areas of need, funds and volunteers. Christopher says you can volunteer from 10 minutes to full time. They need coaches and you do not need to know what you are doing because they train. She says all you need is time and an interest. Even with local and national sponsors, there is a need for funds. The athletes and their families are never charged for participating. Locally organizations like the Walton County Sheriffs Office and Walton School District help with needs. The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run is just one fundraiser. Yolo Boards, Publix, Legendary, Office Depot and others help to provide. Even with this help, Christopher says local help is the only way to ensure the athletes will have the support they need. It costs $800 to sponsor one athlete to the state games. She says they have to rely on the community. Want to help by volunteering or funding our Walton Special Olympians? With the loss of past workers, Walton needs people to step up and make sure the athletes have what they need to make it to state and maybe even Greece. You can find out more at their website, http:// ww.specialolymicswalton.org or contact Kim Christopher at kimchristopher@specialolympicsokaloo sa.org, call 225-3323 or 5253122. All money raised or designated for Walton Special Olympics stays in Walton.

'Up North' nothing to brag about now

I try to keep my scoffing to a minimum. Maybe I do utter such phrases as "Ever wonder why no one ever retires to (name his or her Northern state here)?" or "Yes, your home state is so well run that I am thinking of someday becoming the first person ever to willingly live there after retirement." That's just my gentle, playful way of pointing out the obvious to the confused. But right now, the Northerners' misunderstanding seems serious and worthy of more pointed comment. I mean, really, what the heck is going on up there? If the poor planners who run things Up North know anything by now, it should be that winter is a huge pain in the neck that needs to be prepared for in a big way. And yet, look at what is happening right now: Millions of people are trapped in their Northern homes, and, if not literally snowbound, are justifiably afraid to go outside into the potentially fatal cold. Now desperate to escape the menace of way-sub-zero windchill, they realize they waited too long. Evacuation orders that should have sent millions on a migration south were delayed until far too late, thanks to the dim-witted Northern elected officials' failure to face the seasonal realities. Now, roads and airports are closed because of ice and snow and blizzard conditions. What, no one saw this coming? That massive airport closures are not happening in Florida is no mere fluke. Our state uses an efficient, low-cost snow-prevention system that employs passive-solar methods to warm the air and pavement each day. It has earned us the nickname "Sunshine State." Even when Northern states send their cold air our way, it is quickly warmed here and inconveniences are minimal.

Happenings in DeFuniak Springs

DeFuniak Springs Police Investigate Armed Robbery with Shots Fired
A man robbed a store and shot at the attendant. Officers with the DeFuniak Springs Police responded to an armed robbery Friday night at the Petro Food Mart on U.S. Highway 90 East. Officers and Deputies with the Walton County Sheriff's Office were dispatched just before 10pm last Friday for a robbery by a suspect armed with a handgun. Officers arrived and found the store had multiple items strewn, including the cash register. The store clerk reported a white male wearing a camouflage jacket and black pants entered the store brandishing a black handgun and demanded money. The suspect reportedly had a black ski mask like covering to disguise his face. The store clerk complied, but the suspect became impatient and began retrieving the money from the cash register. The clerk attempted to get the robber to leave by throwing several items, striking the suspect. The agitated robber aimed his revolver at the clerk and fired multiple times, then fled the store. The clerk chased the suspect out of the store, where the robber got into the passenger's side of a vehicle described as a type of late 90's maroon Ford Taurus. The getaway vehicle was reportedly driven by a white female, and drove east on Highway 90 from the Petro Food Mart. Police say, despite being shot at, the store clerk was not injured during the robbery. The investigation is continuing and the incident is believed to be related to another robbery that occurred in Washington County. Anyone having information related to this incident are asked to contact Detective Dees at 850-892-8513 or callers may remain anonymous using the TIPS line at 850-910-TIPS (8477).

Man Previously Arrested Gets Additional Charges

As reported by WZEP AM1460

Here is a followup to a previous arrest we told you about. Remember the man who drove a stolen vehicle into a patrol vehicle? He has been charged with theft. Steven Ryan Ritchie, 23, of Bonaire, GA, was arrested and charged August 27th by the Walton County Sheriffs Office for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving a scene of an accident with injuries, resisting arrest with violence and grand theft auto. Ritchie was driving a 1999 blue Jeep Wrangler which was reported stolen out of Miramar Beach. Upon contact, Ritchie rammed the jeep into a deputys patrol car, pinning the deputy inside the vehicle and causing injury to the deputys shoulder. Ritchie fled on foot but was apprehended nearly 5 hours later by the Walton County Sheriffs Office. Investigators also charged Ritchie for Armed Burglary, Grand Theft of a Firearm and Grand Theft. On August 17th, Ritchie entered a residence in Santa Rosa Beach, by breaking a window to gain entry and deprived the victim of their personal belongings valued over $10,000.00 to include a Ruger pistol. On Monday, December 30th, an investigator charged Ritchie for burglary. Richie broke into a 2007 Lincoln Navigator at a residence off Bayshore Drive and rummaged through the vehicle. Ritchie also tried to open the victims garage door and by doing so, set off the residential alarm. Latent prints were processed by the Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Unit and were sent to FDLE. According to the FDLE lab report, the latent print identified Ritchie as the suspect. Latent prints also lead to additional charges for one count of burglary, one count of armed burglary and one count of grand theft at a second residence off Bayshore. Ritchie has been incarcerated at the Walton County Jail since August 27th and has an out of state fugitive warrant from Cherokee County Sheriffs Office in Georgia for Theft by Taking a Motor Vehicle.

TDC Artists Remembered

The Walton County TDC began going back and recognizing the past 12 years of The South Walton Artist of the Year award winners. In previous years, before Mary Hong was announced The 2014 South Walton Artist of the Year, artists were not given an official insignia of being the award recipient. With the expansion of the program this year, the Walton County TDC felt the need to celebrate the past winners and continue to honor their work in South Walton. TDC Executive Director, Jim Bagby said they want to thank each artist in South Walton for continuing to make the community more culturally diverse and encouraging creative expression throughout the communities. Bagby says the tourists venture to South Walton not only for our beaches, but also for the cultural experiences provided throughout the South Walton communities. The South Walton Artist of the Year program is community based, showcasing a collection of local artists offering a wide range of media from jewelry, to canvas, junk to funk, and even glass. Through this program, the TDC promotes the destinations thriving arts community while placing the spotlight on at least one talented artist in South Walton.

A detour may be more alluring -- and lead more interesting places -- than the road more traveled on Monday. You'll want some fresh food for thought, because Tuesday and Wednesday find you ready to make some giant intellectual leaps. You can really put the pieces together now and fill in the gaps. If you're bored around Thursday and Friday, it's your own fault. Your creative powers are pretty stunning, so use that imagination at work and at play. If you feel like someone's not being straight with you, lead by example -- put your cards on the table and ask what they've got up their sleeve. On that note, things look rather hot for you on Thursday and Friday. That practicality of yours is coupled with extra charm, energy and sexiness -- get out and strut your stuff.

Happy Waitress Even Happier After Receiving Astounding Tip

The happiest server at Cracker Barrel in Lincoln, Nebraska, walked away from work with even more to smile about after receiving a life-changing tip last week. According to the Lincoln Journal Star, a man stopped in with a friend for lunch at the restaurant on Thursday and asked the hostess to seat them at the table of the restaurants grumpiest server because the pair wanted to use their charm to cheer someone up. The hostess responded that the chain actually didn't have a single dispirited employee and instead gave them the opposite their happiest waitress. The server sent to table 222 was 18-year-old Abigail Sailors, who submitted to questions from the two men about why she had such a sunny disposition. Throughout their lunch, Sailors told the patrons her story. Sailors, the youngest of five children, was tossed around the foster care system throughout her childhood. She and her older siblings were separated and reunited multiple times, and suffered from abuse for years until John and Susi Sailors took all five of them in nine years ago. Flash-forward to today and Sailors recently completed her first semester at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota. The freshman, who plays basketball and is studying psychology and youth ministry, pays for her own education. She told her inquisitive customers that she didnt have enough money to return for the spring semester and is saving wages and tips for future tuition. The pair left a $100 tip that was split with another Cracker Barrel server, but the best part of Sailor's day was yet to come: One of the men revealed that he was a Trinity alumnus and pulled out his checkbook. He wrote the young student two checks one for $5,000 to the school and another for $1,000 for whatever else she needed.
