For my first post, I'd like to introduce my Belgian Malinois PTSD service dog. Better therapy than any doctor could offer.

Nicki is 2.5 years old and does her job beautifully. Turns my lights on to wake me up from a nightmare, lets me know when someone is coming up behind me... It's amazing.
malinserv 02/28/2013

Man, I have PTSD, where's my dog?

doctor_w hy 02/28/2013

I can imagine her saying this: stand down soldier and rest. you can relax and sleep, Ill stand watch for you now. edit: yea i have bad grammar.

PIZZAKING92 02/28/2013

Woohoo Belgian!!!
NicoTheBelgian 02/28/2013

No... I just moved to Canada, but am originally from the south. Was stationed in Mississippi. Nicki and I were one of the first teams paired in Texas..

Malinois are so great. My group of friends has 8 of them. When we go to the dog beach or dog park they run together in a pack. It's probably a little disconcerting because two of them are 90 lbs.
shastaman 02/28/2013

Question: How do dogs help out with PTSD, are they more for like calming people down? Like making them relaxed? Beautiful dog btw. And thank you for your service.
NVRCHNGEx702 02/28/2013

Nicki is 52lbs. Most Mals aren't 90lbs, I've only seen a few that big...her mother was only 36 and is a retired K-9.
malinserv 02/28/2013

For the love of all that is good and holy, tell me you have learned some Dutch.
modeski 02/28/2013

So much there in her face.

ThisIsYourPenis 02/28/2013

I was told that it was safer to have a trained Malinois by your side than a loaded firearm.
SSSnuggles 02/28/2013

I have really bad PTSD and all I was offered as treatment was xanax. How on earth so I go about this, it has been on my mind to get a dog to make me feel safer.

How long did it take to get your SD? I am currently suffering from PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, dissociative disorder and extreme paranoia due to being sexually, physically, and mentally abused throughout my childhood. Im 20 years old and still afraid of the dark- embarrassing, but true due to my constant paranoia that someone is always waiting to attack me. My therapist suggested a psychiatric ...

...and remember, as much as she's enriching your life, you're doing the same for her; dogs like this crave a job and a place in your pack and i can guarantee she's loving that she can help you out!
briankauf 02/28/2013

I love to see/hear things like this. Animals can make incredible companions. I only have cats, but for as much as I saved them from the humane society, they've saved my sanity many times over. Also, welcome to Canada. I'll buy you a double-double.
Digimule 02/28/2013

A good friend of mine has a Malinois and the thing is insane. Anyone not in the immediate family is a threat. He has to put it outside when someone visits.
Pchanizzle 02/28/2013

Wow, I haven't seen a dog in my life before. This is so interesting that I must upvote.

Nicki is gorgeous. Have you thought about doing agility with her? She would probably be good at it. Please give her a head scratch for me.
sarcasmplease 02/28/2013

aww beautiful dog. We adopted an ex-police Belgian Malinois from Dogs Trust and she is also amazing.
pizzaboxdemon 02/28/2013

i used to have a Malinois. Rex. He was the best dog i could have asked for. i miss him everyday.
KurtisJackson 02/28/2013

That is a wonderful dog. I would hug that dog if I could.

I have PTSD and this interests me; I really hope you have the time to reply to a couple of questions. 1. What are all the "tricks/abilities" the dog has to assist you? (I hate to classify like that, but for lack of a better word) 2. Can a dog be trained to wake a person up? I have an issue with sleeping to long (12-14 hours each night).
BBQsauce18 02/28/2013

My dad has two Belgian Malinois, male and female. They are the smartest dogs I have ever seen. I really wish I could have brought one of them with me to college.
Buy_My_Pee 02/28/2013

Aww, she's smiling, so beautiful!!!!

Vertol 02/28/2013

Malinois are beautiful dogs. My best friend has one that helps her with her epilepsy.
Jas17p 02/28/2013

Those dogs are intense! My dad and I used to train Shepherds and Malinois in Shutzhund. They are beautiful, incredibly energetic (sometimes overwhelming) dogs.
StephW rong 02/28/2013

this makes me so happy...

afmracer6 02/28/2013

My buddy has one of those dogs. Scar is the dog's name. It's a little odd to read Nicki is helping you with PTSD when Scar kind of caused PTSD in me (I say jokingly).
iPettedASeal 02/28/2013

He's a beautiful dog. I am happy to hear he is able to help you. Thank you so much for your service.I am grateful.
lori4723 02/28/2013

Are people with PTSD considered having an illness or a disease? Ive heard it both ways. Ive heard other people
converted by Web2PDFConvert.com

say calling it either of those is offensive. Either way best of luck to both of you. Also, thank you for your service ma'am.
hahaheehaha 02/28/2013

You two must have an amazing bond! I can't imagine a more loyal companion than a Malinois. If you don't mind me asking, how often are you two apart, and when you are, does she have separation anxiety about it?
poffin 02/28/2013

She is beautiful! And also welcome to Canada. :) Nicki will have so much fun in the snow! (I'm from Saskatchewan)
Larface 02/28/2013

Majestic as fuck. I hope you and your friend take good care of each other for a long time to come.
Palew isconsinite 02/28/2013

Do you have to give back the dog once you're "better"?

MyOtherBodyIsACylon 02/28/2013

I want a malinois defense dog so bad. Someday!

Susan_Werner 02/28/2013

good luck with your ptsd my friend... Sometimes mans best friend is better than any doctor
hattedhater 02/28/2013

I adore Malinois. Easily one of the most athletic dogs I've ever seen.

My uncle used to know a guy who trained them for the police and military. The things that dog could do still astound me. I remember putting a 1% cocaine solution on the tip of my finger and going around the house to find a spot to wipe it on. That dog could find it in under 5 minutes. She could also jump nearly 11 feet ...
Vanity_Shmamity 02/28/2013

malinois are so much more majestic than GSDs. I love how they bred them to not have downsloping hips, such a pretty dog.
Furthur 02/28/2013

My cousin has a service dog for his seizure disorder . It's odd the dog can sense when one is about to come on and calms him down .
meganp24 02/28/2013

What an adorable girl you've got there! I never knew how great a dog's love could be until we got our pug. Not a service dog by any means, but I can't sleep without him by my side! I noticed someone else suggested running agility with her, and if you're at all interested in that I bet you'd make a great team. With her intelligence, energy, and attachment to you I bet there'd be many ribbons ...
absolved 02/28/2013

The ex who introduced me to reddit was a malinois owner. Loved that dog. Fuck that cheating woman.
Elkang 02/28/2013

Van Mechelen nog wel (Merksem hier)! :) Mechelaars are definitely one of the best dogs out there, but they have to be well raised and trained (as apparently yours is). I had one, and it was abused by the previous owner. Logical consequence, the poor thing was constantly afraid of anyone that approached her, even my mom and brother. I was the only one that could touch her and even I got bitten... ...
Tw entyhundred 03/01/2013

You wouldn't happen to live in Virginia, would you?

remote_production 02/28/2013

those are expensive doggies, but definitely worth it to help people out like you. glad you have your pal :))
chantistar 02/28/2013

My father has post traumatic stress disorder. His symptoms have improved so much since we got our dog. Really glad it has been a positive influence on your life too.

I've always been a fan of the Malinois and was wondering how attached he is.... I know they are very big on pleasing their owner, but are they similar to a shepherd where they like to sit back and make sure you're safe, or more of a doberman that likes to stay stuck to your side? edit:spellingz
Fitment 02/28/2013

thats amazing, he's a champ! have you ever tried MDMA? I've heard it can have extremely positive long term effects on PTSD sufferers
avanross 02/28/2013

Nicki looks awesome! Random question, and please don't take offense to this, but isn't PTSD a long term illness? What I'm inquiring, is over the awesome lifetime your going to have with this dog can you expected to be 'cured' of the PTSD, or once the inevitable age comes, does the PTSD return?
dew dnoc 02/28/2013

Worst breed of dog ever. My friend has one and every time I go over to his house It wont chill the fuck out for a good 2 hours.
