HOSPITAL PLANNING AND DESIGN

OVERVIEW

Hospitals are complex type of buildings; It comprises of a wide range of services. Diversity is reflected in breadth and specificity of regulations, codes, and oversight that govern hospital construction and operations. The wide-range of functions - including highly complicated mechanical, electrical, and telecommunications systems - requires specialized knowledge and expertise.

HOSPITAL PLANNING AND DESIGN

OVERVIEW (Cont..)
Typically, hospital design incorporates direct input from owner and key hospital staff early on in the process. The designer, however, has to advocate for patients, visitors, staff, and suppliers who do not generally have direct input in the design. Good hospital design integrates functional requirements with needs of its various users.

HOSPITAL PLANNING AND DESIGN

Hospital Zones
Basic form of a hospital is ideally divided according to functions - into 3 zones:
Nursing Zone: Bed-Related Inpatient Functions Clinical Zone: Outpatient-Related Functions, Diagnostic and Treatment functions Support Zone: Service Functions

Physical relationships between these functions determine the hospital configuration.

Design Brief & Operational Policies

They should include
A statement of functional content; Statements of principal operational policies affecting the whole hospital (material handling, catering, etc); Operational policies for each department outlining: objectives, functions and requirements; A schedule of accomodation (or Functional Space Program, FSP) for each department and service in the form of a list of activity spaces or rooms; Equipment schedules (or Bill of Quantities, BOQ) and level of technology.

Medical Equipment Planner Roles

During the design stage:
1. To determine quantities, sizes, throughput of essential and complementary medical or nonmedical related equipment (e.g. furniture, generator, incinerator, etc.) 2. To determine electromechanical requirements for medical equipment (RDRS) 3. To provide technical specifications of medical and non-medical related equipment.

Medical Equipment Planner Roles

During construction stage (Supervision):
1. Pre-qualification of contractors. 2. Evaluation of submitted equipment specification. 3. Review of shop drawings and on-site coordination of equipment requirements with other disciplines 4. Coordinate delivery schedule with contractors. 5. Site survey and inspection. 6. Ensure proper execution of pre-installation requirements. 7. Physical inspection, testing, installation supervision and commissioning of delivered equipment. 8. Coordinate training of end-users by suppliers.

Equipment Planning: 1:100 Loaded Floor Plans

Their Purpose is to:
Assess suitability of drawings as per space allocations, functional relationships, circulation patterns, etc. Detail the architectural drawings, in terms of medical planning requirements. Help the electromechanical engineers in their preliminary concept design. Generate room and equipment schedules, bill Of quantities, and cost estimates.
