Question 3
The construction of an easement to erect powerlines has caused disruption to the natural environment of a rare
species of alpine possum. Jenny, a biologist, has studied the population of alpine possums along the cleared
easement and, based on her investigations, has proposed the following logarithmic model to represent the data.

P(t) = 200 log10(5t +100), te[0, 24]
where P is the population t months after the completion of the power lines.

a. Find the initial population of alpine possums upon completion of the power lines.

b. State the range of the function (to one decimal place).

c. What is the population 8 months after completion of the power lines? (Give your answer correct the
nearest whole number)

1 mark

d. What is the average rate of population increase in the first 8 months of the study?
(Give your answer correct to one decimal place.)

Also of concern is a colony of alpine lizards, whose population along the power line easement
has also been studied by Jenny. She proposes the following model for this situation.

where Q is the lizard population at time t months after the completion of the power lines.

e. At a particular point in time the lizard population is estimated to be 460. Find the number of months it
takes to reach this. (Give your answer correct to one decimal place.)

Question 3 cont/

g. Find when the population of alpine possums is the same as that of alpine lizards. (Give your answer
correct to one decimal place.)

1 mark

h. Find the length of time over the course of the study during which the population of alpine possums
exceeds that of alpine lizards. (Give your answer correct to one decimal place.)

1 mark

i. Assume the models continue indefinitely. If the population of the alpine lizard colony falls below 100,
the species risks being listed on the endangered species list. Explain why, according to the model, the
population of alpine lizards will never fall below 100.
