Specific notes:
COMMISSION SENSITIVE
, COMMISSION SENSITIVE ~,
Conducted in-depth, "rather technical" interviews of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Teams
(US&R). Conducted interviews with several FEMA leaders. Fire/police interviews
conducted in a more general sense. Noted interview ofVADM Tracey, regarding building
evacuation. Interviewed PENREN personnel as well as Dr. Georgine Glatz (who put
together the Pentagon building performance report). It was noted that the report has been
classified Top Secret (apparently due to force protection concerns) and that only two copies
exist, and are held by Mr. Sullivan, Director ofPENREN. Classification may also be due to
liability concerns about the performance of the Pentagon's blast resistant windows. Dr.
Papadopaulos cited a paper he wrote on civil-military relations in the Pentagon attack
response. He also cited a Stanford University student's efforts to historically 'document the
9111 attacks (all) and that she has made a CD-ROM of all the things she has collected
(interviews, websites, articles, etc.) Kevin will get her contact info and make contact
separately.
USMC:
Gary Solis said the USMC conducted 39 interviews. All have abstracts. Transcripts
unknown. Have a few first responders of note - will submit to T8. All interviews have been
turned in to NHC.
US Army:
Over 1200 interviews conducted by Army. Have brief abstracts on most, approx. 700.
Stephen Lofgren will follow up with Dr. Dudley to produce Army's targeted list for T8.
BUMED:
Conducted less than 60 interviews. Abstracts and transcripts exist for all. Interviewed
personnel from the USNS COMFORT, which responded to NYC, as well as some civilian
hospital personnel from the D.C. area.
OSD:
Conducted roughly 57 interviews. NHC has transcripts of all interviews, and abstracts for
roughly half. Tapes are with OSD Historical Office. Diane Putney will send digital versions
to NHC asap. OSD interviews break down to four categories: 1) OSD leadership 2)
PENREN leadership 3) WHS (building services) personnel 4) DPS leadership. Dr. P will do
a "qualitative" cut on these and fwd to T8.
, Joint Staff:
Conducted no (0) interviews. However, did produce a classified document on DoD
leadership'S response (NOTEWORTllY FOR DANA/MILES) as well as a "chronology"
piece that has been classified Top Secret.
Air Force:
Conducted some classified "Air Defense" interviews (NOTEWORTHY FOR
DANAftvIILES) and also produced a classified "chronology" piece that includes a "short
narrative." Details of the interviews and chronology piece were not know, Kevin will
follow-up to provide.
General Notes:
Red Cross has conducted some sort of historical project for their 9/11 response .:
Columbia University conducted an oral history project on NYC attacks. An article on it
is in the Journal of American History (Sept. 2002). Kevin has obtained the article and
concludes that the project is of limited use to T8 or the NC.
