Voter Integrity Does Matter!

You've probably heard voter fraud is non-existent in Maryland. False! Read further and you'll realize that there is cause for concern. You should also worry that NO ONE veries the citizenship status of voter registrations. You can, however, take comfort in knowing that someone US -- is nally working to solve these problems. While federal laws compel election boards to maintain voter rolls as current as possible, countless voting registration irregularities have been reported by Election Integrity Maryland to election oces. Be mindful that the elimination of obsolete and outdated data lessens temptation to use the data for nefarious or fraudulent purposes. Believe it or not it is possible to steal someones identity to cast an illicit vote. And that's made even easier by computerized discs sold by election boards which contain gratuitous information on registered voters. Such information could be used in a deceitful way to undermine the sanctity of voting! Suspicions abound as well for procedures linked to absentee ballots. In past years a number of legislative changes have been enacted by the General Assembly to make it considerably easy to vote via absentee ballot. We have yet to learn, though, what the statewide policy is for ensuring the authentication of each absentee ballot submitted. That's why we asked the State Board of Elections (SBE) for a copy of the States formal manual that sets forth protocols for all 24 jurisdictions. Like 39 other states chartered to search for candidates for voter record cleansing, Election Integrity Maryland (EIM) has the same mission. We are a non-prot, non-partisan citizen initiative; one comprised of volunteers dedicated to uphold fair elections and voting system integrity. In the course of two years our volunteers collectively examined over 46,000 voter registrations and discovered 19,000 irregularities, spotlighting serious and untimely record maintenance. More trained volunteers would enable us to examine even more records and that's a continuous goal. Upcoming elections could otherwise hang in the balance. Thus, if you have any spare time we need help! Spend just one hour every day doing research and another 100 voter registrations will have been examined. We must nevertheless brag about our current cadre of volunteers who have done a magnicent job; they've alerted the following jurisdictions to a variety of voter registration problems:

Discovered discrepancies amounted to multi-state registrations; duplicate in-state registrations; registrations at vacant lots and at business addresses, etc. Of note, more than 2,500 registrations belonged to dead people whose names remained on active voter rosters despite death in some cases more than a decade earlier. Moreover, we conrmed with the State Board of Elections that somehow votes had been cast after death certicates had been issued for three individuals. These zombie cases were referred to the State Prosecutors Oce and Attorney General Gansler's oce. Of special signicance, 173 cases of duplicate voting in both Maryland and Florida was discovered. These cases are likewise in the hands of the Attorney General's oce. You can deduce from the foregoing that reliability of voting records is paramount to our mission and our diligent volunteer workers. We are, however, also in the business of training poll watchers. Poll watchers become the eyes and ears for candidates, central committees of either party or referendum/interest groups, both inside and outside of the polls. The mere presence of poll watchers is a deterrent! We teach volunteer poll watchers to identify and report suspicious or irregular behavior as well as questionable practices by judges inside and outside the polls.
