ENB373 Second Semester 2012 1. Introduction

Design Brief

Mega Steel has recently decided to build a new warehouse building with modern facilities. The site chosen for this building is located in the industrial estate in Richlands (see Appendix A). The purpose of this building is to provide modern storage and office facilities for the company. The project will consist of a large steel building and associated infrastructure work. As part of a Design and Construct offer, you have been commissioned by Mega Steel to design this large steel building. This building requires a floor area of about 4000m2. The client has instructed that the building be ready before November 2012. To this end, the entire process from the selection of a steelwork fabrication sub-contractor to the erection procedure is to be investigated by your office to forestall issues that may cause delay. Due to the size of this building, the Client has requested that details of the erection procedure are included in your submission. 2. Timing To monitor progress through the design, three milestones have been nominated and a review by the Contractor will be undertaken at these points: Week 4 - 15th August, 2012 Week 7 05th September, 2012 Week 10 03rd October, 2012 Preliminary design Design of cladding systems Design of main steel structures

The final submission, which includes your recommendations on the detailed procedures to be used in controlling the erection of the steelwork and the measures envisaged to ensure the quality of the protective system, are to be presented to the Contractor on the 29th October, 2012. Construction is to commence on the 27th November, 2012 and the building is to be ready for inspection by the end of September, 2013. It is the intention of the Client to enter into a negotiated contract with the contractor prior to the end of October, 2012. You will be required to support the Civil Contractor in these negotiations and subsequently throughout the construction phase, should your design be successful. 3. Cooperation with Others The geotechnical investigation has been completed and the pad footings are currently being designed by others. A spacing of the columns of 7 m and a load per footing of 35 t in both the positive and negative directions has been adopted for preliminary calculations by the concrete designers. It is your responsibility to advise them immediately of any departures from these assumptions. It can be assumed that the work of others will be arranged to suit your design. 4. Operational Requirements of the Building The client has requested that the building has the following dimensions: Clear internal width Clear internal length Clear internal height Roof pitch 40 m 100 m 10 m 5o

Design Brief

The building shall be clad in white colorbond sheeting. Four Roller doors, approximately 4 m wide by 5 m high, shall be installed on each of the side walls of the building. Four additional roller doors of dimensions, 4 m x 5 m are to be installed on one end of the building whereas at the other end 3 m x 3 m special doors are to be installed instead of one of the roller doors to allow access to the office space to be built within the building at this end. Lighting, ventilation, phone and computer networks, electric power services, and water, sewerage, stormwater and drainage requirements will be designed by others. 5. Site The location of the site is shown on the attached document bound into this Brief (Appendix A). The proposed building is to be located with its longitudinal axis approximately perpendicular to Boundary Road. The surrounding area is reasonably flat and there is minimal vegetation. The maximum height of other buildings in this site is about 8 m. A sealed public road services the site and is available throughout the contract period for use by construction traffic. The rectification of damage caused by excessive loading will be the responsibility of the Contractor. Water and three phase electricity services are located in the road shoulder. Cost of temporary reticulation to the site and subsequent removal will be borne by the Contractor. The permanent services may be installed early to minimise the cost of temporary services Access to the site can be assumed on the 20th November, 2012. Other contractors will be working on the site for periods during the currency of the contract and all reasonable access is to be provided and maintained under the Head Contract.

6. Erection limitations To ensure that adequate cranage is readily available at the time of the erection of the steelwork, a limit on the capacity of any individual crane to that common to the Redbank area (90t mobile) is to be imposed on the development of the erection procedure. Erection may only be undertaken during daylight hours and in conditions of wind and rain consistent with safe operations. Stresses in the permanent steel members during erection must be no greater than 75% of the yield strength of the particular steel in that member. Steelwork shall be fabricated in component sizes that facilitate transport by normal vehicles operating without police escort. A sequential erection drawing is to accompany your final submission.

7. Protection All steelwork is to be protected for a service life of 20 years. Description of the system proposed is to be given in the final submission complete with supporting technical documentation. The proposal shall also state the procedures to be adopted to ensure that erection damage is repaired to a standard consistent with the 20 year life requirement.

ENB373 Second Semester 2012 SCHEDULE OF PROGRESS Weeks 1 to 3

Design Brief

During this three-week period, your group of four students have to investigate suitable structural systems for the proposed warehouse building in Richlands. For this purpose, you should survey at least 2 existing structural systems in Brisbane, Gold Coast or Ipswich. By the end of this period, you will complete a report to the Contractor that has details of the two best structural systems surveyed, and the system proposed for the new building (including member sizes and drawings). Following list gives details of expected progress: Show the minutes of team discussions and decisions. Select at least two steel framing systems in Brisbane, Gold Coast or Ipswich for this project Review the details of the structural details including the load paths, and prepare sketches showing this understanding. Use appropriate photographs and/or figures to illustrate important details. Approximate sizes of the structural members and connections of the two systems surveyed; Determine the salient dimensions of the building and indicate on a sketch drawn to a scale of 1:200. From the two steel framing systems surveyed, approximate rules and engineering judgement, determine an appropriate steel structural system indicating preliminary sizes of members and connections based on approximate wind loads

During the Design Studio in Week 4, each of your group members will be required to brief the Client for 10 minutes on progress Weeks 4 to 5 During this two-week period, your group will continue with the design process for the new building. Following list gives details of expected progress at the end of this period: Show the minutes of team discussions and decisions. Refine your wind load evaluation for the proposed building including design wind pressures, external and internal pressure coefficients for the entire building envelope. Evaluate the load for roof and wall cladding systems and design the various components (roof and wall sheeting, purlins and girts) Continue to refine the proposed steel framing system (members and connections, wind bracing) and all other details (location and sizes of openings etc.).

Weeks 6 to 9 During this four-week period, your group will continue with the design process for the new building. Following list gives details of expected progress at the end of this period: Show the minutes of team discussions and decisions. Complete Load evaluation for the chosen main structural system Complete Structural analysis of the chosen structural system to determine design action effects Complete design of the chosen building system using AS4100, i.e. end wall members, columns, truss members, rafters, bracing members Provide sketches where appropriate.

First Part of Steel Design Report (To be submitted on 05th Sept. 2012)

ENB373 Second Semester 2012 Weeks 10 and 11
