Participation Expectations

Participation/Discussion Forums: It is expected that you log into the course and check your JJC email at least three times per week. Important announcements will be communicated via the announcement pages in Angel and/or through JJC email messages. Check both communication sources often. Questions posted and emails sent will be answered within 24 hours Monday through Friday. All JJC holidays including but not limited to spring break, Thanksgiving break and winter break will be observed. Students may continue to work in MyMathLab, if desired. Instructors, tutors, and testing facilities are not available at these times. This includes email correspondence.

Students are expected to post questions in the appropriate "Course Questions" forum in the discussion board. Do not email me individual content or course questions unless it is a specific problem from MyMathLab using the Email My Instructor button. It is better for all students to see the questions in case they have the same ones! Check the board often! Many times reading the answer to another student's question will be helpful to many students. Interacting with classmates by responding to questions posted on the discussion board is encouraged. Icebreaker Activity: Please post a paragraph or two introducing yourself to the class. In addition to an introductory post each student is required to respond to at least one classmates post. Students are encouraged to respond to as many classmates as possible! Interacting with classmates is an important part of an online course; be sure to get involved early on. Posting a picture is optional. You will not be able to stay in the course if you do not complete this component. Netiquette: It is expected that all students are polite and courteous when interacting online. Messages communicated online can sometimes be misinterpreted due to the lack of facial expressions and tone of voice present when communicating face to face. For this reason, be very careful when using humor in messages and avoid sarcasm. The following website has additional tips on netiquette if you are interested in learning more: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html

MyMathLab

Students are required to use the MyMathLab website (www.mymathlab.com) to complete all homework and quizzes. Instructions to register for MyMathLab may be found in Angel under the Lessons tab in the Course Introduction section. A course ID needed to register for MML is found on the Angel site. MyMathLab is an excellent resource to help you learn mathematics! You must complete the MML orientation in MyMathLab before you complete any homework assignments. You must complete the orientation with a 100%. It is based on course policy and information found in the syllabus The required online components can be found under the Homework and Quiz and Test menu options in MyMathLab. Grades are based on the assigned MyMathLab homework and quizzes and paper and pencil tests. In addition to reading the textbook for the content of the course, our MyMathLab site contains video lectures, PowerPoint presentations & animations for students to view. This information can be found on the Multimedia Library menu option.

Graded Assignments and Policies

Homework: Homework will be assigned for every section covered. Homework will be completed in MyMathLab before the indicated due dates. Late homework assignments are not accepted. You will be allowed to complete each homework problem an unlimited number of times until you complete the problem correctly. The required online components can be found under the Homework menu option in MyMathLab. Homework grades are based entirely on the assigned MyMathLab homework. Quizzes: Section quizzes are taken in MyMathLab for each section in chapters 1 4. You will not be allowed to take the quiz unless you have completed the corresponding homework assignment with a 60% or better. Chapter R is a review chapter and there is only a chapter quiz at the end of the chapter. There is no prerequisite for the chapter R quiz. Each quiz may be taken 3 times and the only the higher of the 3 scores will be counted. Quizzes are timed to be 90 minutes. Quizzes must be completed in

MyMathLab before the indicated due dates. Late quizzes are not accepted. The required online components can be found under the Quizzes menu option in MyMathLab. If you use the Back or Refresh button when taking a quiz you will lose access to that quiz. You will not be able to View an example or Ask your Instructor. MML quizzes are a good review for the chapter test! Exams: All chapter exams and the final exam are administered in the Academic Skills Testing Center located on Main Campus in the Student Center 1139. You should give yourself 1 -2 hours to complete each exam. Tests are taken in MyMathLab and similar to the homework and quizzes. You will be given an examination booklet to show work. Students must show all work in the examination booklet and partial credit will be given to improve your score. Be sure to be neat in your examination booklet and label each problem carefully. Calculators are allowed during all exams. Notes, textbooks, computers and cell phones are not allowed on the exams. Answer keys for each exam will be posted in Angel after the appropriate due date. There are no make-up exams. Extenuating circumstances do arise occasionally which cause students to miss exams. To accommodate for these unexpected occurrences, if you miss an exam, it will be replaced by your final exam percentage. All subsequent exams missed will be recorded as zeros. For students who take all chapter exams, your final exam percentage will replace your lowest exam score.
Course Schedule and Deadlines

Firm deadlines to complete the course are provided in the course schedule and course calendar found in Angel. Extensions beyond the firm deadlines will not be granted for any reason. All homework, quizzes and tests may be completed early and you are encouraged to work ahead to prevent any last minute incompletes! All grades will be posted in the Angel grade book. Homework and Quiz grades will be current in MyMathLab and updated in Angel periodically.
Academic Skills Testing Center Hours

The testing center is located in the Student Center 1138. A photo ID is required to take exams in the testing center. All students must abide by testing center policies and rules.
