AIMOST since its inception in 1938, fluorescenr lighting has led a specracular career. A completely new type of illumination, it produced light not in brilliant "spots", but in long luminous tubes restfuliy diffused, lacking in glarc, r,vith shadows kept to a minimum. Cooler, more efilcient, it was easier to see and work by than any light availabTe before. Fluorescent lighting, infact, was so obviously superior that within 15 years it supplied more electric lighting than aII other sources in the nation combined. And it has now become the standard source of illumination for new con-

struction one of the best methods of - and modernizing older buildings. In srores, oftces, just about evefyfactories, homes, schools where fluorescent is upping the level of lighting and working eficiency. No one expects fluorescent lighting to entirely supplant the famrliar incandescent type, which continues to have its specialized applications. But for the uniform general lighting of broad areas, fluorescent has no equal in its efitienc1 as a" Iight-producer and in the quality of the light it produces. Let's examrne a few of its major advantages.

Since 1934
Fluorescent lighting is definitely an Electronic Age development. Like the X-ray, television and radar, the fluorescent lamp actually is an electronic device. But, though simple in principle it requires great care in manufacture and took years of research to develop. In 7934, S1.lvania rt'as experimenting r'vith the first lorvpressure fluorescent lamps, one of r.vhich is illustrated above. S.vlvania pioneered in developing a method for applying the fluorescent coating to the lamp tube. And Sylvania was among the first to introduce the standarcl fluorescent

LUMEN EFFICIENCY DOUBTED When the first u-hite fluorescent lamps reached the mar-
ket in 1938, their ratecl light output rvas 30 lumens per u,att. In less than a decacle, Sylvania had doubled light olrtput to 60 lumens per watt. Toda,v, througJr the development of the nerv stabilizecl phosphor coatings, actual 1r-rmen output througl-rout life for S1-lvania fluorescent
lamps is cousistmrll Ligl:er than publishecl ratinqs.
Normallv, arry lamp, incanclescent or fluorescent, loses a certain amount of brightness rvith age. Ancl because it n as largely impossible to preciict light output afrer a thousand or more hours' use light or"rtput ratings applied to initial bilghtnes: onfu - until very recentiv. Todal-, because of Svivania improvements in the fluorescent coating ancl more exact control of the quantity of argon gas inside each iamp, Sylvanra light output ratings are published not only for initial brightness but also for ,u"iug" light output throughout the rated lamp life.
LAMP LIFE TRIPTED In general, a lluorescent lamp rr-ill last as long as the coating on the tungsten filaments of its cathocles. Until a ferv vears ago, the best cathocie coatings lr'ere rated to last onl\. 25OO hours. Then S1-1r-ania scientists came up rvith an amazingner.v discovery that tripled the rated life of thecathocle coating. As a result, 1'or-rr S1'1r'ania lamp

IAMP COTORS RIGIDLY STANDARDIZED Keeping lamp colors air, vavs the same is an extremel,v tricly problem. To obtain the various tones of light in fluoresCent lamps, fluorescent cr1'stals must be blended to strict formulis. Only by the most rigid controls and constant checking is it possible to assure color constancy alnravs the same for each color the length of each lamp. Svlvania lamp colors are as uniform and standardtzed as scientific manufacturing can make them.

EXACT QUANTITIES OF THE PUREST MATERIATS It is a basic reqr-riremenr in maintaining Sllr.ania's exceprionat lighring standarcls that all materials usecl in Svlvania lamp making be of the highesr purit.,'. Cotnf[63gs4 scienri6c instrulnents are usecl ro detect minure impurities, and to measllre microscopic dimensions. The argon gas, rungsren for cathode fiiaments, phosphor cr1-sta1s, glass. plasrics ancl metals used in making fluorescenr lamps, must meet even higl:er standards of purirv than do clrugs and medical supplies.

CONTINUOUS INSPECTION AND TESTING Both individual and scientific sample inspection of "runs" are made at ever)/ step of lamp manufacrllre. In fact, Sylvania uses almost the same amount of electric power in tetting lamps as ic does in actuallv making them. And before final packing, euerl Tamp musr pass a frna| checkout. FTUORESCENT BALLASTS
All fluorescent lamps require ballasts. Syivania does not manufacture ballasts, but all types needed for use with Sylvania iamps are avallable from other manufacrurers.
The use of a ballast. is necessary because any fluorescenr iamp is fundamentally an electricai discharge source and its current would rise to a value which would destroy the lamp, unless controlled. The ballast is the conrroi
The ballast must be designed for the specific size and tvpe of lamp used, as well as for the voltage and frequency bf the electrical system. It is necessary to use the correcc type of ballast for each lamp to prevenr filament damage,

Certain shades of fluorescent "white" are often chosen for their psychological effect. In general the cool tones produce a more eflrcient "working" atmosphere, the warm tones a more relaxing "social" atmosphere. Depending on the shade of "lvhite" chosen, the lamp will vary somewhat in the amount of light it delivers, since some colors are higher in their light efficiency than others.

In stores, it cuts down rerurns on sales of merchandise for use in homes lighted with incandescent. fts beige tint gives a bright warm appeatance to reds and yellows, brings out the yellow in green,.adds a. warm tone to blue.
Similar to "Standard Warm White" and for the same general uses, but with the addition of a red element which makes it more flattering to people and most oblects displayed under it. Generally recommended for home or social environment applications and for commercial use where flattering effects on people and merchandise are considered importanr.

Why do preheol lomps require o slorler? The preheat lamp operates on a lower voltage than is required to start the lamp. A starter is used to permic preheating of the cathodes sufflciently to start the flow of electrons. The starter switch then opens and a voltage surge establishes the arc necessary for the lamp to emit 1ight.
