English Activities Day Apalit Team, March 26, 2011 Opening Prayer Greetings and ExplanationHandout of Day Schedule

for English Activities Day We will do all the songs and activities Body Parts Curriculum Objectives: 1. SWBAT use the following 8 words correctly and automatically: hand, foot, head, arm, leg, shoulder, elbow, knee. 2. More advanced students WBAT use some of the following words correctly: neck, hip, back, chest, finger, toe. 3. SWBAT respond to at least 8 action commands: raise your hand, clap your hands, stamp your foot, turn around, point to ____, jump, walk, run. 4. Students will have fun speaking English! 5. SWBAT act out the story of Jesus healing a paralytic. OR SWBAT put the pictures in order for the story of Jesus healing a paralytic. (For more advanced students, SWBAT put the story sentences in order for the story.)

Principle to Remember Always!!!!!!!!! When your students are speaking the language, they are learning the language.
Therefore, the teacher-facilitator-group leader should speak as little as possible, and get the students to lead group activities and talk to one another (in English, of course). Another important principle: Model every activity and command! Show the students what you want them to do. Do not be afraid that you are giving them the answers. They will still need to do the activity and will need many reviews before the correct usage of the words become automatic. Notes: -Many Thai high school and college students may know these words, but they may not be able to use them automatically. (automaticity) -Most Thai do not pronounce any s that comes as the final sound of a word. Therefore, this curriculum uses the singular as much as possible, except for such phrases as clap your hands. -One useful method to get students to pronounce a final s in a word is to link it to the following word in a phrase. For example, Raise your hand. Should sound like Ray zure hand.

-Relationships with school administrators and teachers have just as much potential for reaching them for Christ as relationships with the students. 8:00 Arrival/Registration (Local teachers and local students will do, or assist.) 8:30 Opening Assembly & Ceremony Flag Ceremony Opening RemarksPrincipal Greetings Groupings-- hand, foot, head, arm, leg, shoulder, elbow, knee, neck, hip, back, chest, finger, toe. (Be sure to clear these with someone knowledgeable about the culture first. Foot and toe may not be good group names, for example, or head may not, either.) (Each group should have 10-15 students.) Make name tags (translators help get nicknames) (Are tags with sketches of body parts culturally appropriate?) 9:00 Action Songs and Games Songs: (practice all) Hi! How are you? (Kamusta ka?) Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes Hop, Skip, Jump Action Song Those Bones Hokey-Pokey or Boogie Woogie Making Melodies in My Heart (thumbs up, elbows out, knees bent, feet apart, head bent, tongue out, turn around) Games: 1. Pass the Balloon. (over your head, between your legs = over/under) Teams get in a straight line. Number of team members should be the same on each team. First person in line passes the balloon overhead. Next person passes the balloon under, between legs. People alternate passing over/under. Last person in line runs to the front and passes the balloon over When first person is again at the front of the line, the team is done. The first team to finish wins. 2. Carpet Square (or Banig) Challenge Each person gets a square and enough space to move around. (small mat/hand towel/piece of cardboard) Leader calls out body part to put on the mat, i.e. shoulder. Each person touches that body part to the mat asap.

Stick to the 8 basic body parts first. Ways to make it more challenging: 2 body parts at the same time. Hop over the mat. / Skip over the mat. Etc. 3. Blanket Race 4-6 members of the group firmly hold a blanket. Another group member lies or sits on the blanket. At the signal, the group holds up the blanket and races to the goal with player sitting on the blanket. The blanket is not allowed to drag on the ground. The first team over the goal is the winner. Judging: The fastest team wins! or Cops and Robbers Group forms a circle. Two things that can be tied around ones neck are started at different points in the circle. The cop tie is tied in one knot; the robber tie is tied in two knots. The ties are passed from person to person, going in the same direction. The object of the activity is for the cop to capture the robber. When the two ties meet at the same person, the robber is caught, and that person is out. Can replay many times. 4. Repeat Hop, Skip, Jump song. Play recording. Assist Ss to do the steps mentioned. 5. On Top of Thingsfolded tarp for each team. Each team gets a tarp/plastic sheet. The whole team stands on the tarp. The team gets off, the tarp is folded in half, and the challenge is for the whole team to still fit on the tarp. The tarp continues to be folded in half. Some team members may need to stand on other team members feet, shoulders, hang around other members necks, or whatever is required in order for all team members to stay on the tarp and not touch the floor/ground around the tarp. The team that stays on the smallest square of folded tarp wins. Optional: 6. Hopscotchno speaking necessary for Ss, but fun. Draw a hopscotch grid on the floor/ground. Team members take turns hopping through the grid.

Group chooses a person to be the model. Give one or two body parts papers to each pair. Pairs tape (or pin) the papers on the appropriate part of the models body. Partners say the word as they tape it on. Ss check on an answer key to see if they got all body parts right.

Repeat of morninguse the ones Ss liked best, or use the ones you didnt have time for. Body Parts Pictionary One student draws a body part. The group calls out the answer. Optional, not directly related to objectives: The Sailor Song (hand clapping action) A sailor went to sea, sea, sea To see what he could see, see, see, But all that he could see, see, see Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea! 7 Up (Numbers 1-7) Players sit or stand in a circle. Each person counts and puts hand across chest in the direction he/she wants the play to continue. Reverse hand direction means to reverse whose turn is next. On the number seven, the player puts hand above head in either direction. Putting hand across chest for number seven constitutes a mistake. Other mistakes are when a player says a number when play was reversed away from him/her, or when a player doesnt respond when play is directed toward him/her. Pass the Hula Hoop Players stand in a line, holding hands. The first player puts his/her body through the hula hoop and passes it on to the adjoining player without letting go of hands. Each player must get through the hoop and pass it on, without letting go of the hands of the players on either side. If the line is broken (hand let go), the hula hoop starts back at the beginning again. 2:00 Short StoryJesus Heals the Paralyzed Man o Group leader read the story; translator interprets and explains. (Coach your translators in advance, especially about forgiveness.) (See handout.) Have Ss act out the story. Have Ss color the coloring page about the story. Optional: have Ss arrange the pictures in the right order. For more advanced Ss, do a Q & A time.
