Over view: COS 1020 Long Hair Design 1


Course: Health, Recreation & Human Services. Occupational Area: Cosmetology (COS). Level: Introductory. Audience Expectations: Pathway for journeyman hairstylist. Students will be able to create a variety of up style techniques and create different hair partings to create interest in up do hairstyles. This is an exploration class. Approved Alberta Education Resources: Milady Standard Textbook & Salon Fundamentals (Use combined material), CTS HRH course. Audio/ Visual Equipment Requirements: Power point slides, DVD up style, Facilities & Equipment Required: Classroom & Lab (salon). Expendable Material/Costs: $ 50.00 Hair magazines. List Of Merchants For Resources/Supplies: $ 100.00 Bobbi Pins, hair products, Comb kit $50.00 (included in school fees) Description Of Lab Activities And Practicum Activities: Students have to do practical and theory work. Evaluations, Materials/ Worksheets To Be Used: Work sheets are in modules, teacher feedback (Practical) Alternate Delivery Provisions (Individual, Small Group, Entire Class): Individual & entire class. Students that are K & E or learners with mild to severe disability will have less workload. (For example: instead of doing 10 of each technique they will do 5).

COS 1010 Variety Of Strategies To Be Employed For Meeting Individual Learning Styles: Digital version of modules, DI scaffolding techniques can be used, more time allowed to finish assignments and projects. Practical. Guest speakers. Due Dates For Projects, Assignments & Exams: Practical exam schedule March 19, 20. Theory exam: March 24. Module score sheets are due March 18.

Day 18 (Feb 26) * Theory: (75 min) Lecture. I introduce the concepts and basic hair styling concepts. Watch hair DVD (up styles). Talk about practical exam. Summative (1 up style incorporate 2-3 hair techniques learned in COS 1020) * Practical: None * Clean Up: (5 min) General Outcomes: The students will: Define and describe long hair design Specific Outcomes: 1.1 describe the advantages and disadvantages of wearing a long hair design 1.2 name different techniques used to create long hair design; e.g., ropes, knots, braids 1.3 Identify and describe the implements and materials used to: 1.3.1 control 1.3.2 direct 1.3.3 part 1.3.4 knot 1.3.5 braid 1.3.6 rope

Day 19 (Mar 3) * Theory: (30min) I explain combs, brushes (use) & demonstrate hair partings. Then I demo hair ropes, braids and knotting techniques on mannequin head in classroom. * Practical: (30 min) Students then go to lab and practice. Then they will do straight/curved and diagonal hair partings. Hair roping braids and knots. (Formative- teacher gives feed back every time)- Get check marks in module score sheet. (10 of each) * Clean Up: (10 min)

General Outcomes: The students will: 2. Create and properly secure ropes, knots and two- and three-strand braids Specific Outcomes: 2.1 demonstrate correct handling of implements to control, direct and part hair 2.2 create straight, curved and diagonal partings 2.3 create and secure a variety of hair roping, braid and knotting effects, including: Day 20 (Mar 4) * Theory: (10 min) lecture & review from yesterdays lesson on the concepts of hair partings, rope braids & knotting techniques. * Practical: (60 min) Students in salon. Students will practice. They have to practice as many times as they want. Must do 10 each for each in module score sheet. (Formativegive students feed back every time) * Clean Up: (10 min)

Create and properly secure ropes, knots and two- and three-strand braids Specific Outcomes: 2.1 demonstrate correct handling of implements to control, direct and part hair 2.2 create straight, curved and diagonal partings 2.3 create and secure a variety of hair roping, braid and knotting effects, including: Day 21 (Mar 5) * Theory: (40 min) Lecture, I introduce new material and demo. I demonstrate single, double and triple strand ropes. I explain assignment (Summative for Practical exam) * Practical: (30 min) Students go to the lab and practice new material. (Must do 10 of each in workbook module). They can also work on hair partings, robe braids, knotting techniques. (5 each) * Clean Up: (10 min) General Outcomes & Specific Outcomes are the same as above in day 19 & 20 (Mar 4) plus new ones that are listed below.

Day 22 (Mar 6) * Theory: (10 min) Review techniques and demo all of them again in lab. (Salon) * Practical: (60 min) Students will practice single, double & triple strand ropes in lab. (Have to do 10 each in module workbook. Get marked and feedback. Formative * Clean Up: (10min)

Day 23 (Mar 7) * Theory: (20 min) I demonstrate two; three strand braids, knotting and combination braids in lab. (Salon) * Practical: (50 min) Students practice two; three strand braids, knotting and combination braids in lab. (Salon) Must do 10 of each in workbook module. Formative * Clean Up: (10 min)

Day 24 (Mar 10) * Theory: (10 min) Verbally review theory & answer questions of up style techniques and any concepts. * Practical: (60 min) Students work on hair partings, hair ropes, braiding and knotting techniques on mannequin. (10 for each, must be checked, teacher offers feedback) Formative * Clean Up: (10 min)

COS 1020 Day 25 (Mar 11) * Theory/ Practical: None. I take my students on a field trip to Skills Canada (All my cosmetology classes) ALL Day.

Day 26 (Mar 12) * Theory: (50 min) Lecture. I talk about skills Canada hair competitions and what is all involved. The different levels, different categories and show a few mannequin heads that won in competitions from my previous students. We watch an iMovie video on different type of hair show & discuss. * Practical: (20 min) Then I talk about the up style practical exam and let students find one in a hair magazine and cut them out. * Clean up: (10 min)

Day 27 (Mar 13) * Theory: (40 min) Lecture. I review with students what will be on the theory exam and more about the practical exam. (Expectations, how it will be marked, what I will look for etc.) Then I demonstrate an up style that has incorporated 2-3 techniques the students have learned this is done in the classroom. (Demonstrating up style expectation) * Practical: (30 min): Students will work on their modules. * Clean Up: (10 min) All GOS & SOS are the same as above. One new specific out come. Specific Outcome: 2.4 design, create and secure hairstyle by combining two or more hair design techniques

Day 28 (Mar 14) * Theory: None (10 min) Answer any questions students have about exams or anything else. * Practical: (60 min) Students work to finish up their module work. If completed they can practice their up styles for exam. They can study for theory exam. I can also give students up styles to duplicate from pictures I have from hair up styling books. 8

Day 29 (Mar 17) * Theory: None. A guest speaker comes and speaks to students about winning first place in hair competitions. (Up style competitions) Also demonstrates a few techniques and up styles. * Practical: (0 min) None. Students ask questions about hair up styles, competitions etc.

Day 30 (Mar 18) * Theory: None * Practical: (70 Min) Students have to finish module score sheets. (Catch up day) * Clean Up: (10 min)

Day 31 (Mar 19) Final Practical Exam- 1 up style on mannequin head. (Individually done by students. Summative (If students practical finish exam, they can study in pairs or individually)

Day 32 (Mar 20) Final Practical Exam- - 1 up style on mannequin head. (Individually done by students) Summative (If students finish practical exam, they can study in pairs or individually for theory exam)

Day 33 (Mar 21) (70 min) we review theory for exam as a class. Play Jeopardy for review with the class.
