Problem 1.

(40 points) A length of coaxial transmission line has inner radius a, outer radius b, and is of length ` in the z direction. Between the conductors is a material having constant conductivity 0 . A voltage, V0 , is placed on the inner conductor, at radius a. The outer conductor at radius b is grounded. Between conductors, the -dependent potential is: V () = C1 ln() + C2 (a < < b)

where C1 and C2 are constants to be determined. a. Find C2 in terms of C1 and other given or known parameters by considering the boundary condition at = b.

b. Find C1 in terms of known parameters by considering the boundary condition at = a.

c. Find the electric eld intensity, E, for a < < b by appropriate use of the gradient.

d. Find the current ux density, J.

e. Find the total current, I .

f. Find the resistance of the structure.

Problem 2. (30 points) A parallel-plate capacitor has plates of area A located at z = 0 and z = d. Between plates, there is a dielectric of permittivity (z ) = 0 exp(z ), where is a constant. Charge Q is placed on the upper conductor, with Q on the lower conductor. The lower plate at z = 0 is at ground potential; the upper plate is at potential V0 , which is to be found. Because the permittivity varies in the vertical direction only, the electric ux density will be constant throughout the capacitor volume. a. Using the boundary condition, D n|S = s , determine the electric ux density, D in the capacitor interior (magnitude and direction), as a function of Q, and possibly other known parameters.

b. Find the electric eld strength, E, in magnitude and direction.

c. Find the potential, V0 , on the top plate.

d. Find the capacitance of the structure.

e. Find the stored energy in the capacitor, using any method.

Problem 3. (30 points) A constant electric eld, E = E0 a z is applied along the axis of a solid cylindrical wire of radius a, whose conductivity is given by () = 0 (/a), where 0 is a constant. The cylinder length is long enough to be considered innite. In all questions below, express your answers in terms of given (or otherwise known) parameters. a. Find the current ux density in the wire, J().

b. Using Amperes circuital law, determine the magnetic eld strength, H, everywhere inside the wire ( < a).

c. Using Amperes circuital law, determine the magnetic eld strength, H, everywhere outside the wire ( > a).

d. Check your results of parts b and c by using H = J.
