FIRE WALK WITH ME

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS

VIDEO GAME MOVIES

Co-presented with the Hudson River Museum INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE (2011) After two years of painstaking work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boythe adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. At PAX, a major video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making FEZ. Jonathan Blow considers beginning a new game after creating Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time. THE LAST STARFIGHTER (1984, 35mm) Seeking escape from his boring trailer-park life, Alex Rogan obsessively plays the Starfighter video game. Little does he know that his mastering of the game is being watched, and soon he is recruited to replicate that mastery in real life, way out in space! Teaming up with scaly alien Grig, he takes on the evil Kodan forces. Can Alex successfully shake his comfortable life at home in favor of intergalactic adventures? You bet he can. SUPER MARIO BROS. (1993, 35mm) A polarizing film even upon its release, this is an adaptation of the popular 1985 Nintendo video game made by people who had once had the game described to them while on a two-night bender. Taking a bright and cheery pixelated landscape of the video games and transforming into into a futuristic nightmare featuring bizarre dinosaur people, a scene-chewing Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in power boots, it is a kaleidoscope of strange ideas and incredible imagination.

DRAFTHOUSE FILMS
A FIELD IN ENGLAND (2014) During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist (Michael Smiley), who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field. THE ACT OF KILLING (2012) In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog Of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass-killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of massmurderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. MIAMI CONNECTION (1987) Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Floridas narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crimecrushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song Against the Ninja, Mark (and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug worlds smelliest underbelly. Itll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound cant stop until theyve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the stupid cocaine...and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION!

Broadway Brunch: AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951) A GI (Gene Kelly) stays in Paris after the war to become an artist, and has to choose between the patronage of a rich American woman (Nina Foch) and a French gamine (Leslie Caron) engaged to an older man. The plot is mostly an excuse for director Vincente Minnelli to pool his own extraordinary talent with those of choreographer-dancer-actor Kelly and the artists behind the screenplay, art direction, cinematography, and score, creating a rapturous musical not quite like anything else in cinema. CASABLANCA (1942) One of the true classics that feels like a truly timeless and completely new work of art. Hollywood workaholic Michael Curtiz directs what could have been a paint-by-numbers Hollwood romance into an emotionally draining, incredibly entertaining, perfectly executed tale of love, greed, loss, murder, betrayal and loyalty. Its influence cant be overstated, its flawless script will never be praised enough. And theres Bogey and Ingrid Bergman, given the defining performances of their careers. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) Charlie Kaufmans inventive script and Michel Gondrys deep bag of tricks perfectly complement eachother in this tale of love and loss. Jim Carrey, who has never been better, and Kate Winslet, continuously perfect as always, are the heartsick couple trying to forget each other in this visual feast. This film will sneak its way into your heart and shatter you from the inside out. Happy Valentines Day everybody! FEELIN SCREWY (1990) Comedies exist to make people laugh. This comedy exists to make people question the reliability of their brains. Presented as an urban comedy that offers Fun! Romance! Rap! REALITY!, this movie defies all laws of logic and communication to fabricate a brick wall of surreal hilarity. Somewhere in Los Angeles, three high school seniors get laid, fight the war on drugs, and learn to rap. Technically. Big Screen Classics: HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971) Black comedies dont come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they dont come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). SABRINA (1954) Charmingly funny and heart-warmingly romantic. Billy Wilders Sabrina takes the traditional Cinderella story line and flips it on its head in this satirical look at class and romance. Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and Audrey Hepburn all shine in this charming comedic gem. And of course, theres plenty of drinking. So we asked Alamo Beverage Director, Bill Norris, to whip up some fancy cocktails for this one so we can enjoy it in style.

STREETS OF FIRE (1984) The merits of this film are many: its stunning production design, its no-fat dialogue, its crew of rotating editors who set the standard for modern editing techniques (for better or for worse), and of course, the music - courtesy of songwriters Jim Steinmann and Stevie Nicks, and amazingly bolstered by The Blasters as the house band at Torchies Bar. WEST SIDE STORY (1961) This is a musical that encompasses both catchy songs and emotional ones. It knows when to make your feet tap and when to make your heart feel. Its one of those films that equally exhilarating and heartbreaking at the same time. But what really sets this cinematic masterpiece apart from the rest is its striking, effective and mesmerizing combination of realism and stage performance. YOUVE GOT MAIL (1998) While some of Nora Ephrons other films are far more critically acclaimed, theres something about this movie that never fails. Maybe its the charming chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Perhaps its the deliciously quirky supporting actors. And of course, the fact that the entire film is basically a love letter to New York City certainly doesnt hurt.

Sunday Cinema Club: BLOW OUT (1981, 35mm) When movie soundman Jack Terry (John Travolta) inadvertently records a car accident, he cant shake the thought that what he heard was not just a simple tire blow-out. Learning that the victim was a presidential candidate only adds to his suspicions, but no one, including police investigators, will look deeper. Unwilling to let it go, he seeks help from Sally (Nancy Allen), a prostitute who he rescued from the wreck. But the further he goes, the more he puts her in harms way. Movie Party: DEATH WISH 3 (1985, 35mm) Charles Bronson is back as vigilante Paul Kersey, this time facing off against nasty punks in the third feast of violence that is the Death Wish series. When the pierced and painted gang cant be stopped as they terrorize the folks trying to live peacefully in a Brooklyn neighborhood, police chief Richard Shriker (the wonderful and recently departed Ed Lauter) gives Kersey his blessing to gun them down at his convenience. TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992, 35mm) It may have taken some years for us to realize how very good this prequel to the Twin Peaks TV series actually is, but some twenty years later this gut-punch of a movie is not only as impressive as the best episodes - it may even be one of the best David Lynch films period. Here we are allowed into that mysterious world of Laura Palmer, watching the nightmare of her last seven days unfold. GROUNDHOG DAY (1993) Phil Connors, an egotistical Pittsburgh weatherman, hates nothing more than Groundhog Day. He detests covering the annual festival in nearby Punxsutawney, Pa., and he especially despises sharing his name with the towns celebrated rodent. Phil hopes to get in and out of the small town as soon as possible, but a blizzard strands him overnight and Phil wakes up to find out there is no next day. Its still Feb. 2. THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977, 35mm) This was the film that delivered on a promise that no one ever made: to fearlessly display the typical American family being sliced, mangled and compromised in every conceivable way by an inbred clan of radioactive mountain yokels. Take our time machine back to 1977 and never leave; this right here is one of the crucial crowning masterpieces of no-brow horror cinema. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982, 35mm) Dare to witness the electrifyingly entertaining rise and fall of the worlds ultimate fictional female punk band. Teenage trio The Fabulous Stains (including a teenage Diane Lane and Laura Dern) tear fists-first into the music industry in new wave battlegear, letting nothing stand in the way of their revolutionary assault on a deflating male-dominated record industry. This legendary battle call to young female rockers, wavers and punks everywhere is a crucial and explosive experience, unstoppably enjoyable and often credited as being a fundamental inspiration to the historic Riot Grrl musical/social movement.

MAUVAIS SANG (1986) Marc and Hans, two old gangsters, are ordered by a rival to repay a debt. They plan to steal the vaccine for a mysterious virus, which affects those who make love without being in love. They call on Alex, who has just left his girlfriend Lise, and falls madly in love with a girl in a white dress he sees on a bus. Her name is Anna and she turns out to be Marcs mistress... Movie Interruption: PRETTY WOMAN (1990) Its the movie we turn to when we need a reminder that not all guys are jerkfaces, that even when were down on our luck, selling ourselves on the streets, there is still hope that one day, well get to take a huge bubble bath and then jump on the bed in a hotel penthouse. In other words, this movie is therapy, and when you combine it with cocktails and a theater full of people singing along to Princes Kiss, its potentially life-changing. AGFA Presents: RAW FORCE (1982, 35mm) If you think youve been entertained in the past, here is your white-hot scholarship to FUN SCHOOL!! Blue-skinned undead samurai? Check! Cannibalistic rump-chasing monks? Yes sir!! Drunken kung-fu yacht party? To the max!!! Wall-eyed flesh-trading seaplane pilot with a Hitler moustache? Man ohhh MAN!!!

THE ACTION PACK

INTERACTIVE SCREENINGS AND CINEMATIC EVENTS

Crispin Hellion Glover joins us for screenings of his two feature films, each with a one hour Big Slide Show a dramatic narration of eight different profusely illustrated books. He will answer questions after the show and have books available for sale. WHAT IS IT? (2005, 35mm) Scenes with naked women in elephant masks, Shirley Temple, Glover being lowered deus-ex-machina style into a Maxfield Parrish scene...Its like Fellini on psychedelics -- wildly creative but completely twisted. Known for creating many memorable, incredibly quirky characters onscreen as an actor, Glovers first effort as a director will not disappoint fans of his offbeat sensibilities and eccentric taste. Featuring a cast largely comprised of actors with Downs Syndrome, the film is not about Downs Syndrome. Glover describes it as Being the adventures of a young man whose principal interests are snails, salt, a pipe and how to get home as tormented by an hubristic racist inner psyche. IT IS FINE! EVERYTHING IS FINE (2007, 35mm) Another mind-bending foray into unexplored cinematic territory that will challenge expectations and defy conventions. Glover uses his visionary cinematic skills to bring to life the graphically explicit psychosexual fantasy world of a man shunned by women and society but who lusts after intimacy, acceptance, and long hair. The beauty of his direction is his ability to create an atmosphere that is strange and unsettling, yet sensual and erotic.

MOULIN ROUGE SING-ALONG (2001) If youre a true romantic, you already know the story: Christian (Ewan McGregor) moves to Paris to pursue a Bohemian lifestyle and then of course falls into a doomed love affair with Satine (Nicole Kidman), the most beautiful girl at the Moulin Rouge. Your heart will swell! Your lungs will burst! Your brain will explode with rainbows! SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD QUOTE-ALONG (2010) A love letter to geek culture from Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee OMalley, this film was criminally underappreciated during its initial theatrical release, but of course Alamo audiences immediately knew we had something special on our hands and so a bunch of us flocked to the theater to watch it again and again. So once again weve built a separate subtitle track for all of our favorite lines of dialogue, and well project them on screen alongside the movie karaoke-style so you can say all of them perfectly in time with the characters on screen. TOTALLY 80S SING-ALONG DANCE PARTY There will never be another form of entertainment greater than the music video, and seeing them on the movie screen with a thumping digital movie theater sound system blasting the music throughout the theater is one of the best experiences you can have in life. While on most nights the Alamo strives to be the best movie theater in town, at Sing-Along Dance Parties we transform our auditoriums into the greatest dance club in your neighborhood, complete with fully VJed sets of the greatest music videos ever made plus free props included with your ticket.
