Discovery
While on a boat in the ocean one night some years ago, I understood what David discovered centuries ago. Without the glare of city lights, I looked up and saw the stars filling the sky. As a young shepherd, David laid his head on a rock after getting his sheep to settle down and in awe wrote, The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork (Psalm 19:1). The Hubble Space Telescope is celebrating its 23rd birthday 373 miles above the earth. Because of it, we are now able to go where no human has gone before. We have discovered a heavy new kind of phenomenon called a Magnetar, which is no bigger than a large city but weighs more than the sun. It is highly condensed, and its magnetic pull is a billion times stronger than the earths. We have discovered that black holes seem to be on a feeding frenzy, having swallowed more than one billion stars into an area no larger than our solar system. Quasars pour out a thousand times more light than a hundred billion star galaxy. The Ring Nebula is the colorful remains of a huge exploded star and is six trillion miles across. The formation of the debris suggests that it was spinning so fast that it actually flattened prior to blowing up. Back to physics class! Of course, all of this reminds us of the miraculous powers of God. If He can create the heavens, He can help us with our problems, overcome habits, heal sicknesses, and change the hearts of those who are hardened. However, we must remember that the same Psalm 19 which turns astronomy into theology also notes: The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes (verse 8). Trying to grasp all of Gods glory in the heavens and His truth in His Word is like trying to drink the ocean from a straw! However, thirsty souls are still invited to come to Him. Come and you will see, said Jesus (John 1:39). We have a simple telescope of truth which enables us to discover more about our churchs ministry, philosophy, teaching, and our love for our Lord. Discovering First Baptist Church Naples is offered once again this week. No sophisticated equipment is needed, just an open heart willing to hear from God and to allow Him to shine light into your life. The staff and I want to share our hearts with you and to rejoice in The law, the testimony, the precepts, and the commandments of the Lord, all of which are the basis of our beliefs and ministry (Psalm 19:7, 8). Our prayer is that the people dwelling in darkness will see a great light (Matthew 4:16). May you realize that The Lords steadfast love extends to the heavens (Psalm 36:5). Glance at your problems, but gaze at His glorious, unending, never-failing love.
