Assignment/Activity Title Dada project Skill Media

YearFreshman Portfolio CategorySocial Awareness

I placed the Dada project into the social awareness category because it displayed the modern problem of gun violence. Dada was originally an art movement to create a new kind of art that was different from the old and stepped away from the normal styles. This group project was performed in Drama class. The group I was in consisted of Lily Montgomery, Siena Fouse, Michelle Armstrong-Spielberg, and I. The goal of this project was to create a short scene that showed a Dada scene or monologue depicting modern events, problems, or ideas. The product had to be at least 2-3 minutes long and be intended for a wide audience of viewers. It also had to include some text, movement, and a statement/point of view. For our project we decided to have a scene showing how gun violence is still not stopping, and it just keeps on happening. On the day of the performance we all wore black or dark colored hoodies/sweatshirts and dark colored pants. We had a video and sound playing in the background. Each of us would walk around the classroom amongst the audience with our hoods up. Then scary/creepy music would begin to play and everyone in our group would freeze where they were. The first person would put on their hood and begin to pantomime shooting all around, then they would shoot themselves and fall to the ground. While they lay on the ground pieces of various news reports would play describing the incident. Every member of the group would do their own shooting scene and then lay dead around different parts of the classroom .In the end there was a slide which showed how many people were killed from specific incidents. Although I did not like the sad and somber motifs/feelings of this assignment, I do think it was effective. I liked how we were walking amongst the audience as if we were regular people, and then all of a sudden one of us would become the next killer. I could tell that this project was effective because after we finished the class was speechless and the room was very silent. I enjoyed performing this project as well as seeing the other groups perform their own respective projects. It was interesting to see different peoples views on problems in the world and in society today. Every group was able to redo their project in class to make it more effective, or to correct any errors. One of our issues while practicing and performing was laughing. We were laughing because some of our groups (myself included) were not able to get the pantomime a shooting motion properly. I think our group did a good job of not going too overboard with the performance. One of our classmates suggested that we have the sounds of actual gunshots and screaming as we were shooting, but our group and our teacher Mrs. Jeral agreed that adding that might be a little it over-kill. Overall I enjoyed this project and thought it was very meaningful.
