Authors: SAHAYARAJ Kitherian, ASHARAJA Antony Cruz, RAJESH SathyaMoorthy, MARTIN RATHI Jesu Antony Contact: ksraj42@gmail.com Keywords: seaweeds; phytochemicals; extraction methods; quantity and quality Abstract: Secondary metabolites of five Chlorophyta: Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Caulerpa veravalensis, Chaetomorpha crassa, Ulva fasciata, Ulva lactuca and five Ochrophyta: Padina pavonica Liin., Padina tetrastromatica, Stoechospermum marginatum, Sargassum tenerrimum, Sargassum wightii occurring in the Gulf of Mannor Tamil Nadu (India) were investigated using soxhlation and cold percolation extraction methods with polar (Chloroform-CL, water-AQ and methanol-ME) and non-polar (Hexane-HE) solvents. The latter method was very suitable for the extraction of secondary metabolites from both Chlorophyta and Ochrophyta. However, Soxhlation method can be practiced for the extraction of steroids, tannins, saponins, cardiac glycosides and phenolic compounds. Both Terpenoids and Phenolic compounds were recorded in Chlorophyta and Ochrophyta. Total terpenoid level was high in Chlorophyta Caulerpa scalpelliformis, whereas tannins, total phenol and bound phenol content were high in Ochrophytae species. The finding envisages that crude extracts of all the tested algae contained potential bioactive compounds which can be used for various biological activities.
