The Set Top system used for localising the talking person is based upon four bidirectional microphones, through which it is possible to determine the origin of the voice and the distance of the person talking in such a way as to optimize the camera orientation and zoom. Furthermore, voices can be distinguished from non-vocal sounds (doors, footsteps, moving chairs...) thereby avoiding any interaction resulting from such sounds. For the situation where a speaker moves in another direction, the camera follows the person while optimizing the zoom.

Very small movements are not taken into consideration by the system.

The system is also capable of recognising the situation where two persons alternately speak quickly. In such a situation, an intermediate position will be considered and the camera zoom will allow optimal framing of both subjects.

35

The use of Autotracking is not particularly recommended for crowded conferences where a lot of background noise is present.

Here you can choose to set the following parameters: Use Encryption: If encryption is activated, the Set Top will use encryption in either H.323 or H.320. Encryption is active from start (ISDN): If this option is selected, the Set Top executes the encryption procedure from the start of the ISDN connection. If the option is not selected, the ISDN connection starts in unencrypted mode, however, you can activate encryption at a later stage during the connection, select the padlock present on the status bar and press OK. Concerning IP calls, if encryption has been activated, the data protection procedure is in any case always activated from the start of a videoconference.

52

Unprotected calls From this dropdown menu, you can choose the policy the Set Top will apply if the terminal, with which a videoconference session is being negotiated, is not capable of supporting protected calls. In detail: Disconnect The Set Top does not allow connection with a remote terminal that does not use encryption and therefore automatically disconnects. Ask Confirmation During the session negotiation phase, the Set Top asks the user to confirm if they want to make an unprotected call. Inform The Set Top informs you that you are about to make an unprotected connection by displaying a message on video. State The Set Top notifies you that you are about to make an unprotected call, and when the connection is made, an opened padlock symbol will be displayed on the status bar. Length of AES Key(Only for H.320) From this dropdown menu you can choose, for ISDN connections only, from three AES key lengths: 128 bits, 192 bits, and 256 bits. Moreover, the auto option allows optimisation of the choice according to the characteristics of the terminals negotiating the videoconference session. Regarding an IP connection, the key length is always 128 bits. Length of Prime DH Number Key (ISDN Only) The protocol used requires the contemporaneous exchange of a prime number and an AES private key between terminals. For H.320 calls you can choose between two prime numbers: High Security length 1024 bits. Very High Security length 1536 bits. For IP calls, the Set Top always uses the High Security option with a 1024bit length.

53

Note: Most common video communication terminals normally use the High Security prime number length and the 128-bit AES private key.

(*) Technical Note: Where a firewall is crossed, the firewall administrator must open a range of dynamic TCP and UDP ports, as configured in the Set Top, in order to allow bidirectional IP traffic. Moreover, having opened the ports, the various protocols involved in a call must be taken into account. These are TCP 1720 (Q.931), TCP 1503 (T.120), UDP 1719, 1718 (RAS). Also in the case of crossing a NAT, the administrator must open all the ports applicable to the firewall. Here the term open signifies no modification is to be made to the port number but to assign to a specific host in the NAT domain, such as the Set Top, the TCP and UDP traffic for the range of ports.

65

All Aethra videoconference systems have been tested with: Cisco PIX Firewall (Firewall H.323 compatible - release 6.1 or later). Cisco MCM Proxy (NAT H.323 compatible - IOS release 12.2 or later).

67

Streaming Management
From NETWORK INETRAFCES IP SERVICES go to the icon STREAMING MANAGEMENT and press OK. The following page will be displayed:

In this menu you can configure the Set Top to use streaming. This technology allows viewing and listening to live or recorded events by a large number of users connected to the IP network without the need to have previously downloaded a file. It is based on the continuous transmission of data from a server and compressed by particular programs (codecs), then decoded at the client side by an appropriate player that functions even during data buffering thereby avoiding long delays. The Set Top is able to transmit to networks in either unicast or multicast. In a situation where streaming is unicast, only one client at a time is allowed to connect to the unicast stream. If it were necessary to stream a pre-recorded event, then it would be sufficient to replay the event using a VCR or a DVD player connected to the Set Top video input available for this purpose, select this input and start streaming. It is important to make it clear that the Set Top does not function as a distribution server but as a simple codec. In fact it does not provide connections such as RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol), nor can it provide unicast streaming to multiple clients, nor can it offer services typical of distribution servers.

68

Streaming transmitted is supported by the RTP protocol (Real-time Transport Protocol). Video packets are coded in H.261, while audio packets are coded in G.711. Configurations: The following are selectable options: "Streaming Management": this option allows modifications by external applications (for example, from the Web) of the parameters Announcements, Video, Rate, Address, Port and TTL/Hops. If his option is not selected and in the Address field a unicast IP address is present, then the only system able to view the stream will correspond to that given by the IP address. "Enable all addresses": this option allows modifications to the previously mentioned parameters by almost any external system. If this option is not selected, then you can establish which system or subnet (according to the mask definition: if the mask is 255.255.255.255 then the system will be selected, if the mask is 255.255.255.0 then the subnet will be selected) is enabled to perform this operation. Similar to the explanation above, the limitations also apply to streaming viewing when the Address field has been set to a unicast IP address. "Enable Streaming": This option allows you to view streaming according to the limitations imposed by the parameters Streaming Management and Enable all addresses. If this option is not selected streaming will never be activated. "Announcements": this dropdown menu allows you to choose how the Set Top will notify the user that an external system has requested streaming activation. Options are: "Activation": The Set Top will display a dialogue box containing a warning and an image symbol of a video camera which will remain as a reminder and for the period streaming is active.

69

"Status": Only the reminder will be displayed for the active streaming status. "Confirmation request": A dialogue box will appear where the user is requested to confirm streaming activation. This option affords an extra level of protection. "Video": this dropdown menu allows you to choose which video signal is to be viewed when streaming. If the option Automatic is selected, the streaming content will depend on the status of the terminal connection: if the terminal is connected, video originating from the remote site will be sent, if the terminal has a multiconference session open, then you will see or hear the active speaker or all the conference participants (according to the video status selected in the MCU), if the terminal is disconnected you will see local video. If the Local option is chosen, the user viewing the stream will always see and only see local video. "Rate": this dropdown menu allows you to choose the size of the bandwidth occupied by the total sum of all streaming audio and video. To this purpose it must be remembered that if a rate of 64K has been selected the video will not be viewable (the complete bandwidth will be occupied by audio). "Address": this parameter contains the IP address for the stream. If this field contains a unicast IP address, it will be automatically overwritten by the IP address of the system that requested to view the stream from an HTML page supplied by an internal web server. Pressing the Active button on the configuration page can also activate streaming: doing this you will initiate the transmission of audio and video packets to the selected IP address. If the IP address is multicast, streaming will be sent to a multicast group identified by the IP address itself and enabling viewing to a large number of users (theoretically unlimited). "Port": This parameter contains the number of the UDP port where audio packets will be sent. Since the streaming content is RTP, in reality data are sent to four different ports: one port for audio, one port for video and two ports for RTP information corresponding to both streams. Therefore starting from the audio port number it is implicit that the audio data will be sent to this port number, video data will be sent to audio port number plus two, while odd port

70

numbers will be reserved for sending RTP information (E.g. If the audio port number is 554, the port number for video will be 556, while port numbers for RTP data on both streams will be 555 and 557). "TTL": this parameter contains the value for the Time to Live associated with multicast packets. Similar to the configuration page supplied by the integrated WEB server, a link to the SDP (Session Description Protocol) file containing a description of streaming session in accordance with RFC 2327 (specifies video and audio coding, the UDP ports and the IP address of the streaming recipient). This file can be useful if you wanted to send the stream to a distribution server (some servers request this). How to view streaming: The tools used for viewing streaming as already indicated are termed players. Viewing with a plug-in: The integrated Web Server provides the simplest method. Connect to the Set Top via the Web and from the server Home Page, click on the image that looks like video; in this way you will access the page produced as a result of streaming. This page has been created purposely for Quick Time that must therefore have been previously installed on the PC where you want to view streaming video. Accessing the page automatically activates the sending of audio-video streams. The user can choose the video signal to be displayed (Local or Automatic) which must be compatible with configured settings. The Set Top provides the link to a page from which it is possible to gain access without requiring any password and view only streaming. You can access this page directly using the address: http://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/ streamview.asp (or streamviewen.asp for English language) where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the IP address of the Set Top. Viewing using an external player Another way of viewing streaming is to use the player external to the integrated Web server. The only players tested are QuickTime 6.0 and VIC

71

(supplied by the University of California Berkeley), but this does not exclude compatibility with other players that accept RTP streams. The first operation necessary is to activate streaming. This can be achieved by simply entering the IP address in the Address field on the streaming configuration page of the system where the player is located or the multicast address of the group to whom streaming is to be sent. Pressing the Activate button will enable the machine to begin the transmission of audio-video packets to the address selected. If you use as a player QuickTime, it is enough to select File from the menu and then Open URL in new player and enter http://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/stream.sdp where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the IP address of the Set Top that must send the streaming. Viewing using a Distribution Server Distribution servers offer a range of services for the management of streaming which the Set Top cannot offer directly. If users would like to avail themselves of the use of a distribution server for streaming transmission sent from a Set Top, they can do so in accordance with the characteristics of the server. Using a Proxy Multicast streaming transmissions require a configuration appropriate to the network over which it must travel. In addition it is important to point out the limitations imposed by the presence of any Firewall or Proxy. In fact to offer good protection these must block IP packets directed to not noted ports such as the UDP ports used for audio and video streams during streaming. Thus if streaming has to pass through such a machine, it must be configured for any eventual multicast and the appropriate ports enabled for streaming. If streaming travels within the internal network instead, problems can still arise if in order to gain external access, it is necessary to pass through a firewall. In fact from trials with QuickTime, the fact has emerged that requests to the proxy are still made even if the configuration includes addresses that should not be used. Therefore in the situation where streaming cannot be viewed, it is necessary to try and disable the use of a proxy in the QuickTime configuration.

72

Deactivate Streaming
In order to stop streaming, it is sufficient to go to the button Deactivate on the streaming configuration page and press OK, or close the browser.

Integrated Multiconference Unit (optional)

Introduction
This section is dedicated to the functional description of the MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) integrated in the Set Top. It is necessary to have enabled the MCU by entering an enable code supplied by the manufacturer for the case where the Set Top is from a production series not supplied with such functionality. Through the user interface you can interact fully with the Set Top from the activation phase through to the concluding phase of activating a multiconference. Conferences can be activated by an operator in real-time and during a multiconference the operator can intervene in order to: Disable the audio for one or more terminals, include the participation of other terminals in the conference, include normal telephone terminals, disconnect one or more terminals from the conference, and interrupt the conference at any instant.

Multiconference Setup
Before activating a multiconference session configuration is required: From the Home Page select: 1. 2. SETTINGS MULTICONFERENCE

The following will be displayed:

75

In this menu you can set: Network Type: IP, ISDN or Mixed. Conference Type: allows you to select the number of participants and the desired Rate (e.g. for an MCU IP you select 5@128 from the dropdown menu which means that the working MCU will allow the Set Top to manage a multiconference with a maximum of 5 terminals including itself and with a maximum Rate for each connection of 128K). Cascade Role
Master or Slave. This option is present because it allows you to set up cascaded MCUs with a hierarchy tree and therefore it is necessary that every Set Top managing an MCU declares itself and is therefore congruently configured as Master or Slave. It is clear that corresponding to the base node of the cascade there is the Set Top Master, while corresponding to the child nodes there are the Set Top Slaves.

Appendix I
Network Requirements IP\H.323
The network requirements that allow point-point connections between two videoconference terminals are the following: The complete network path connecting point-point between two H.323 terminals must have available a constant bandwidth for the whole duration of the connection. The bandwidth effectively used on LAN/WAN Full-Duplex networks is the sum of the Audio Rate + Video Rate and increased for TCP/IP overhead (approx. +20%). In the case of Half-Duplex LAN/WAN networks the aforementioned bandwidth is obviously to be doubled. For example, if it is necessary to guarantee a 384K connection for the video and a 64K for the audio, the bandwidth allocated must be at least (384+64) *1.2 540K for each HalfDuplex connection. In the case of a dial-up WAN links it must be understood that their efficiency in terms of useful bandwidth is approximately half the total bandwidth. It is always preferable to use mechanisms such as QoS for WANs because it takes into account the total bandwidth required for a videoconference rather than rely exclusively on over dimensioning the network. This is necessary for the growing number of contemporaneous connections or networks already sufficiently loaded. The network needs to be prepared in such a way that latency and jitter are as low as possible. Extended times for latency and variable jitter can create serious problems, above all for video quality. It is always preferable that H.323 terminals are connected to LAN connections of the switched type in order to avoid that traffic generated by terminals is superposed on that normally present in the network. It is preferable to avoid using protocols of the NAT type on router interfaces that route H.323. packets. Often NAT protocols do not allow correct routing of connections.

102

In the case of NAT, Firewall or Access List implementations, it is necessary that these are H.323 compatible.

Network Requirements for Multivideoconferences H.323 (MCU)

The same requirements indicated above for point-point connections of two terminals make it possible to have multipoint connections between more H.323 videoconference terminals. It must be realised that in this case more H.323 streams converge at certain points in the network increasing the local network-load. The consequence is that the bandwidth allocation requirement, at the point where the H.323 Multiconference Unit (MCU) is to be installed, must obviously be the sum of all individual connections, calculated according to the description in the previous paragraphs. To this traffic is added all the data traffic should there be any T.120 conference traffic in the MCU.

H.323/H.320 via gateway

The network requirements previously described are also valid for connections between H.323 and H.320 terminals via gateways. It must be realised that in this case more H.323 streams converge on the gateway increasing local network traffic. The consequence is that the necessary bandwidth allocation requirement, at the point where the H.323/H.320 gateway is to be installed, must obviously be the sum of all individual connections, calculated according to the aforementioned descriptions.

Appendix II
Interoperability NAT - FIREWALL
Introduction
There are many strategic advantages for companies that succeed in making all traffic converge from voice applications, video and data to one IP network infrastructure. Unfortunately the driving force to concentrate all IP communications on one single network has reduced. The connection between a companys corporate network and the Internet world is accomplished with Firewalls and device using NAT (Network Address Translation), which block voice, and video calls on IP. 1. Firewalls block IP traffic for video and voice placing a barrier against any unrequested (unsolicited) communication from the outside 2. The devices that implement NAT block IP traffic since the equipment located inside the NAT use private IP addresses and therefore are not addressable from outside of their local domain. There are many solutions to overcome the problem of getting IP communications past NAT and Firewalls: the solution limit is to go around these devices, otherwise the network infrastructure could be improved using an Application Level Gateway (ALG) or to go out through the Firewall and NAT with semi-tunnelling connections. Going round the Firewall and NAT are not the best solutions for most companies. Removing the Firewall or placing equipment such as a Proxy or an MCU in a strategic element of a network in order to avoid passing through a Firewall or NAT could compromise the networks security. Using these devices is very expensive and besides this an access policy for Firewalls and NATs would be needed. These devices should be located along the communication path at every point where a NAT and Firewall are present. A second solution would be the improvement of the network by introducing an ALG (Application Level Gateway) though intrusive and potentially expensive. ALGs are software specifically designed for Firewalls from

104

various producers. These applications examine every packet that attempts to pass through the firewall in order to determine if it concerns a known protocol like H.323 or SIP. If the packet contains a known protocol, the Firewall allows it through. However, like Proxies and MCUs that go around Firewalls, also ALGs need an access policy for Firewalls and every Firewall/NAT device needs up to date ALG software. Since new protocols are being continually developed, the ALG software must be updated often.

IP Voice and Video Crossing NAT and Firewall

The use of existing network infrastructures for the transmission of voice, video and data promises interesting strategic advantages for companies of all sizes. Commonly known as rich media communications or Internet Protocol (IP) communications these technologies for converging networks offer new opportunities to communicate, coordinate and collaborate with customers, suppliers, commercial partners and others all over the world. Unfortunately the protocols used for IP communications conflict with most of the security mechanisms for networks, such as Firewalls and NAT, resulting in protracted or late implementation times for IP Video and Voice applications.

Firewalls and NATs How they work

In an IP network every device is assigned a unique IP address. All computers, telephones and videoconference terminals have at their disposal approximately 65,000 ports for the purpose of establishing communication channels in order to transmit data to other devices present on the network. Messages between IP network devices are composed of packets that contain the following information: The IP address of the terminal that generates the message and the port number from which the message has been sent. The IP address of the terminal at the destination and the port number at the destination to which the message is sent. The data to be sent.

Firewalls
Companies that allow connection to the Internet for their own employees typically install a Firewall in order to prevent external intrusions or trespassing against their resources. The Firewall is a device that is located

105

in a private network and protects the internal resources of a company from potential external attacks. The Firewall examines the destination IP address and port number of every packet received from outside. Usually Firewalls are configured in such a way that if a computer from inside the firewall requests data from a computer outside the Firewall, then the Firewall allows packets through from the external computer but only if they are sent to the same IP address and same port of the internal computer that generated the request. On the contrary, if the Firewall receives a packet destined for a computer that is located internally and determines that the destination computer has not initiated any communication, the Firewall discards the incoming packets. Firewalls are nearly always configured to block all incoming traffic that has not been explicitly requested (unsolicited). Internal Web servers are an exception inside the Firewall that must be accessible from the outside. In this case the network administrator configures the Firewall to let through packets destined for port 80 of the IP address of the Web server. This operation allows external users to send requests to connect to the companys Web server in order to access data on that server.

NAT (Network Address Translation)

Network Address Translation is an Internet standard that allows a LAN (Local Area Network) to use a set of IP addresses for internal traffic and another address (or set of addresses) when you connect to services on an external network, for example Internet. Devices that implement NAT are located at boundaries between LAN and Internet and their purpose is to provide translation of IP addresses for all passing packets that are destined for the Internet. NAT has principally two functional purposes: Many organisations use NAT as security mechanism because it masks internal IP addresses if hackers do not know the IP address of a machine, they cannot attack it and cause disruptions. NAT allows a company to use more than one IP address. Since these addresses are only used internally there is no problem with IP address conflicts with other organisations.

106

Firewalls and NAT stop Video and Voice communications on IP networks

The IP based voice and video protocols like H.323 demand that terminals are capable of establishing audio-video communication channels using IP addresses and data ports. In this situation a problem arises: terminals must wait listening for incoming calls to establish IP connections but the Firewall is generally configured in such a way as not to allow packets past that are not expressly requested. Even if the network administrator left a port open in order to receive notification of a call, port 1720 designated as a wellknown TCP port, the Video and Voice communication protocols for IP necessitate other ports to be opened in order to receive control messages and open audio and video channels. The identifications of these additional ports are determined dynamically and not a priori, implying that the network administrator must open all the Firewall ports to allow Video communication and Voice over IP applications, virtually disabling the Firewall. A scenario such as this has little prospect of being implemented since it eliminates network security policies. NAT also creates an obstacle for voice and video communications over IP. NAT allows an organisation to assign private IP addresses to the local network LAN, but routers that control the flow of data towards Internet can send only packets with routable addresses or public IP addresses. A terminal which is located behind the NAT on the LAN can initiate communication with any other terminal in the same LAN because the IP addresses within the LAN are routable, that means it is possible to have subnets in a company that are managed by an internal router. This allows the establishment of audio-video communications on different branches of the subnet. Being their private addresses, and therefore not addressable external to NAT, terminals on the LAN cannot be reached by externally originating calls. Even if terminals inside the NAT initiate a call directed to an external terminal a problem still arises. When the call is initiated, the IP address of the calling terminal is contained in the payload of the packet sent. The destination terminal receives call setup packets, examines them and starts to transmit audio and video towards the terminal from which the call was received, and

107

from which the IP address was obtained by examining the payload of received packets. If this IP address is private, the router for Internet access discards the audio and video packets sent from the terminal external to NAT towards the internal terminal because the packets sent were non-routable. The connection between two terminals appears to be successful but in reality the NAT-internal terminal does not ever receive the audio or the video from the external terminal.

Solution for the NAT-Firewall problem

The only equipment that does not create any of the problems described, is a NAT/Firewall H.323 compatible device. In this case the Firewall does not block the port TCP 1720 and allows through to the other dynamically determined H.323 ports. Since videoconference systems usually have private IP addresses that are not reachable from external routers, the network administrator can define static NAT (a permanent association between a private IP address and a public IP address reserved for H.323 videoconferences) for every terminal, which necessitates being reached by an external connection. Here NAT substitutes the static IP address, D, in the payload and header setup packet sent from the internal terminal to the external terminal. The destination terminal uses the public address D present in the payload for addressing the reply packets; these are resent towards the calling terminal via the NAT IP address.

Firewall ALG
The Application Level gateways (ALG) are Firewalls programmed to recognize specific IP protocols, like H.323. Instead of only looking at the information contained in packet headers in order to determine whether to transmit or block them, ALGs analyse in detail the data contained in the payload packet. The H.323 protocol inserts important control information in the payload packets, for example audio and video port identification. The terminal expects to receive audio and video connections from the remote calling terminal on these ports. Analyzing which port the terminal should use, the ALG dynamically opens only those, which are effectively used by the H.323 application, leaving the others closed thus guaranteeing network security. An example of a Firewall ALG follows.

108

The Aethra Application Level gateway is present in the Aethra Stargate xDSL Router and allows every videoconference terminal, independent of manufacturer, resolve the NAT/Firewall problem. The Stargate router is capable to check every incoming/outgoing H.323 call and open dynamically only the ports used for the H.323 videoconference. The Stargate router also supports NAT functionality and therefore is capable of substituting the private IP address automatically (inserted in the H.323 payload packets by the videoconference terminal) with the public NAT address. When the Aethra Application Level gateway functionality is used with an Aethra videoconference system, the function Aethra NAT of the videoconference system must be disabled due to the fact that the equipment is H.323 compatible.
