General description ASTM A516 is the most commonly used specification of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) for pressure vessel plate. It is used for pressure vessel plates for moderate and lo er temperature service here improved notch toughness is important. It calls for a silicon!"illed steel made to fine grain practice #y adding aluminium. The e$cellent through!thic"ness properties% hich minimise the ris" of lamellar tearing in heavy eldments are a result of lo sulphur content and clean steel ma"ing practices #eing employed. All Mittal Steel South Africa plate mill products are produced via the continuous casting process. The thic"ness range is therefore limited from 6%&mm to 6'mm for normalised and as rolled products. (Thinner than 6mm is availa#le in coil form on en(uiry) )ressure vessel steels to ASTM A516 are readily elda#le #y the usual metal!arc elding processes. *hen elding thic"er plates in the higher grades. The values of the car#on e(uivalent (34) should #e calculated from the values for the chemical composition on the test certificate for the plates concerned.
