VALUE ENGINEERING TIPS:

I I I I I I I I I I Refer to 1996 ASHRAE Systems and Equipment Handbook (Chapter 34.) Premium efficiency motors specified with ROI. Variable-speed drive (vsd) specified with ROI for pumps. Large suction and discharge ports reduce pressure losses incurred in the suction and discharge processes. Flatter capacity vs. outdoor ambient curve than reciprocating products, which means that they can more closely approach indoor requirements at high demand conditions. Scroll compression requires no valves; impact noise and vibration are avoided. Most scrolls are of the hermetic type which require virtually no maintenance. (Compressor manufacturers operation and applications manual should be followed.) Consider building automation options with chiller including remote control and/or monitoring.

DESIGN CHECKLIST:

I I Figure load in tons of refrigerant: Chiller water temperature drop. Leaving chilled water temperature condenser water temperature rise. Entering condenser water temperature. Obtain gpm and equipment pressure drops for system, to size pumps. Coordinate sequence of operation with flow diagram. Electric data coordinated with electrical engineer. Plumbing data coordinated with plumbing engineer. Structural data coordinated with structural engineer. Coordinate equipment noise levels with acoustical consulting engineer. Coordinate cooling tower design requirements (See January 1999 Hvacr designer tips column on cooling towers). Specify pertinent pipe insulation and equipment insulation requirements. Consider rigging requirements to install chiller within building.
