COUNCIL MEMBER LAURIE A. CUMBO SELECTED TO CHAIR
THE CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON WOMEN`S ISSUES

January 22, 2014 Brooklyn, NY New York City Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo (D-35)
has been selected to chair the Council`s Committee on Women`s Issues.

Deeply honored by the nomination, she is prepared to work hard with her colleagues to introduce
critical pieces oI legislation that will work Ior the betterment oI all women and Iamilies.

While great strides have been made Ior women, true equality still has not been realized. Women
continue to make only 85 cents to every dollar earned by men. Pay discrimination heightens
economic disparities and hurts Iamilies. With powerIul women leading in all levels oI
government, Council Member Cumbo believes it is time to Iinally deIeat the status quo and raise
the bar Ior all New Yorkers.

In addition to challenging pay inequalities, the Council Member, a proud Spelman College
graduate, has a large agenda Ior the committee with issues ranging Irom:

Supporting women and minority owned small businesses
Fighting and caring Ior victims oI domestic violence, especially immigrants
Standing up Ior reproductive health
Promoting Iamily-Iriendly workplaces
Ending street harassment and human traIIicking with heightened and targeted
enIorcement
Educating women and girls in civic engagement and public leadership
Ensuring that the next generation oI women have the proper education in STEM
Iields to prepare them to compete in the job market

'I am humbled and ready to lead my colleagues on the Committee Ior Women`s Issues towards
draIting legislation that not only levels the playing Iield but also empowers our women. There is
no time like now to champion real gains Ior all women and girls.

Council Member Cumbo will also serve on the Iollowing committees: Cultural AIIairs, Libraries,
and International Intergroup Relations; Finance; Higher Education; Public Housing; and Youth
Services.

Council Member Cumbo was born and raised in Brooklyn. As a cultural leader, entrepreneur,
activist, college proIessor, educator, lecturer and small business owner working in the not-Ior-
proIit sector, she has dedicated her liIe to community development and preserving the dynamic
elements oI diversity that make Brooklyn what it is today. She is dedicated to serving the needs
oI the neighborhoods oI Fort Greene, Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, and
BedIord-Stuyvesant.

Spelman College is a highly selective, historically black college Ior women located in Atlanta,
Georgia.
