Mobile Bay Inshore Fishing Reefs

Alabamas inshore reefs provide easy access and enhanced fishing opportunities for anglers
throughout the coastal area. The Marine Resources Division has constructed a total of 27
inshore fishing reefs located within Mobile, Bon Secour and Perdido Bays, and Mississippi
Sound. Concrete bridge materials, culvert pipes, concrete roof panels, oyster shells and
crushed limestone were utilized as reef materials. The Ft. Morgan Barge reef contains the
remains of a sunken barge only.

In addition, water bottoms around seven gas production platforms in lower Mobile Bay
have been enhanced with crushed limestone rock.

Lynn Dent Boykin, Bender/Austal, Shellbank, Denton, Grey Cane, Jr., Fish River, and
Bayou Cour reefs are dual purpose, serving as both artificial fishing reefs and also as
experimental oyster reef rehabilitation areas.

The water depth above all material is approximately 3.5 feet mean low water (MLW).

Boaters should exercise caution during times of extreme low (winter) tidal conditions.

Alabama Marine Resources Divisions artificial reef program is funded primarily with
Sports Fish Restoration funds.

The Marine Resources Division has constructed a total of 27 inshore fishing reefs located within Mobile, Bon Secour, and Perdido Bays, and Mississippi Sound. Concrete bridge materials, culvert pipes, concrete roof
panels, oyster shells, and crushed limestone rock were utilized as reef materials. Seven reefs are experimental dual-purpose sites, providing excellent inshore fishing while improving oyster habitat on noproductive relict
oyster reefs. In addition, water bottoms around seven gas production platforms in lower Mobile Bay have been enhanced with crushed limestone rock. The water depth above all materials is approximately 3.5 feet at
mean low water (MLW). Boaters should excercise caution during times of extreme low (winter) tidal conditions. Alabama Marine Resources Divisions artificial reef program is funded primarily with Sports Fish Restoration
