AutoCAD Sections
Purpose: The goal of this checklist is to improve the quality of drawings, design layout of hvacr systems, and ultimately hvacr design documents that will allow for accurate contract documents to be produced.

Obtain AutoCAD drawing of building section from architect or other. Mark equipment designation on drawing and show to scale for coordination. Highlight electrical data (i.e., motor control, variable-speed drive (vsd) panels, cable tray) locations in an out-of-function color. Mark plumbing data (piping to floor drains, makeup water) with appropriate labeling and sizes. Coordinate fire protection with fire protection engineer (duct smoke detectors shown and coordinated with sprinkler piping and sprinkler heads). Indicate and call out structural data (housekeeping pad, inertia pads) on drawing with appropriate sizes. Show associated ATC and direct digital control panel on drawing(s). Coordinate section with building floor plan ductwork and equipment where section is cut. Designate access around equipment (coil removal, filter removal, etc.). Highlight column designations in section(s).

To figure available space for ductwork in ceiling: Obtain floor-to-floor height. Subtract the ceiling height. Subtract the ceiling construction. Subtract floor slab above grade. Subtract the structural framing of floor above. Account for area for lights (average 6 in. but coordinate with electrical engineer). Account for duct insulation (1.5 in. around, 3 in. total, unless specified other). Now you have the available space for run of ductwork. Layout-based floor plan where building section is cut through. Coordinate electrical data with electrical engineer (account for space in ceiling for lights, cable trays). Coordinate plumbing data with plumbing engineer (gravity-feed lines dictate pipe locations). Coordinate fire protection data with fire protection engineer (coordinate with sprinkler piping mains, take-off and sprinkler heads). Coordinate structural data with structural engineer. Coordinate hvacr work with structural beams, joists, framing, floor slabs). Indicate elevations within the section(s) (ceiling height, floor-to-floor height, etc.). Coordinate lab equipment with lab consultant and manufacturer of equipment/hoods.
