It's official! We are now Denbigh United Presbyterian Church! On Sunday, January 5 we had our service of union at which Deborah Dail was installed as pastor of Denbigh United, our officers were ordained/installed and the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia pronounced the congregations of Second and Denbigh Presbyterian Churches united. To God be the glory. We are working to have all the signs and publications of our church feature our new name. Please note the new look of our newsletter which reflects our new name. The outdoor sign on Denbigh Boulevard has been updated with our new church name. The Transition Committee continues its work of overseeing the many details related to uniting our congregations. Please be patient as our Transition Committee Task Forces work systematically to carry out the work before us. If you have any questions about the progress of various aspects of the transition you may direct your questions to Deborah or any member of the Transition Committee (Bill Morrison, John Munick, Becky Skaar, Carolyn Woodard, Jay Dunn, Joe Bender, Theal Edwards, Gail McLeod, Fred Wong, Terry Harrison, Dale Pennell, Bob Young). Please continue to pray for all members and leaders of DUPC as we join our hearts together in ministry and mission.

Dear Friends, I feel very joyful as I write this article for our February newsletter. We are united and it feels wonderful to worship, fellowship and serve together as Denbigh United Presbyterian Church. Thank you for the privilege of serving as your pastor. While we are official, there is still much work to be done as we unite not only our hearts and ministries but also our belongings. We have already moved a number of precious, historical items from the Second Campus to Denbigh United. Please make note of the pulpit just outside the sanctuary door, the baptismal font, the communion table and chairs at the back of the sanctuary and other furniture items in the fellowship room and parlor. The Historical Artifacts/Memorabilia and Aesthetics Task Forces of the Transition Committee will continue to move other items of sentimental and historical significance. The Music Task Force of the Transition Committee is doing careful research and evaluation of all the musical instruments in each facility to determine which instruments are needed and will best serve the Denbigh United Churchs music ministry needs. The DUPC Congregational Care Committee as well Chaplain/Ministerial Assistant Rusty Norton and I are working to learn of the needs of all our members. We are visiting, sharing communion and helping as we are able those who are in the hospital, home or long-term care facilities. Please keep us apprised of the needs of our congregation. If someone needs or desires a visit or other assistance, please let us know. Joe Benders Prayer Task Force of the Transition Committee is on bended knee daily for our union that we will be One not only in name but also in spirit and heart as we serve God. Once again, I rejoice in what God has done, is doing and is yet to do in and through us for the good of Gods kingdom. Lets continue praying. Lets continue welcoming one another with open arms and open hearts. Lets continue to keep our eyes on Jesus and our ears attentive to His call. In Christs Love and Service, Deborah

Denbigh United Christian Outreach (DUCO) joyfully announces it has officially changed its name to THRIVE Peninsula! While its 40-year foundation will always remain at THRIVEs core, our leadership recognized that the word Denbigh in the name had become more of a hindrance than a hale. After extensive consideration, this ministry was motivated to select a name that more accurately represents its expanded scope in contributors, services and service area.

If we bring just one food item every Sunday. . .

Some suggestions for THRIVEs pantry: Meat Fruit Cereal Pasta Beans Rice Jello Peanut

butter Jelly/Jam (Item is very Low) Spaghetti sauce Dry Potatoes Canned meals (stew, ravioli, etc.) Dry milk (individual pkgs.)
Baby

food and formula

Food items should be canned/boxed/non-perishable

. . . the shelves would never be bare.

THRIVE Peninsula formerly D.U.C.O. (Denbigh United Christian Outreach) is in critical need of food supplies. Each week the need is greater than the week before. We thank you in advance for all of your support. You may bring your food donations to church and place them on the kitchen counter where they are picked up and taken to D.U.C.O. each week.

DUPC PrimeTimers will work at the Food Bank on Saturday, March 22. Please contact Ken Bowers for additional information.

S.H.A.R.E. Dates for February

January 2014 S.H.A.R.E. orders were placed the week of January 13. The January orders will be distributed in the Narthex area of Denbigh Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 25 from 7:00-7:30 AM. All orders must be picked up by 7:30 AM on each distribution date. Orders for February S.H.A.R.E. can be placed the week of February 3-7 and orders will be called in Monday, February 10. February orders will be at DUPC in the Narthex from 7:00-7:30 AM on Saturday, February 22. Volunteers cannot be held responsible for orders which are not picked up.

The 2014 FoodBank Volunteer Schedule is now posted on the bulletin board near the kitchen counter. Please make note of when your group (e.g., PimeTimers, You, etc.) is scheduled. Thank you to Ken Bowers for developing the schedule again this year.

SOLE-ful support!
If you cant walk a mile in their shoes then this is the best way to help! Thank you for the generous donations of your new or gently worn (any size) shoes to THRIVE Peninsula formerly Denbigh United Christian Outreach (DUCO). Your shoe donations received in the bin marked Shoes in the Narthex were beyond any expectations we could have imagined. Thanks for your SOLE-ful support!

The Gardens at Warwick Forest

On a regular schedule, Denbigh Presbyterian Church conducts a service at The Gardens at Warwick Forest. The next service is Monday, January 27 at 10:00 AM. This is a multicenter facility for those who are in nursing care, rehabilitation, and hospice. The worship service lasts for approximately thirty minutes and includes all the elements enjoyed during our Sunday Services. We need volunteers to sing, read, or just visit with those who attend. It is a blessing to all and a great opportunity to reach out to those who cannot normally attend Christian services. For more information or if you would like to help, please contact Rusty Norton (cell 757-814-1091 or email rustynorton@denbighpres.org). Blessings to all, Rusty Norton

SAVE THE DATE!

Denbigh United Presbyterian Church is hosting the P.O.R.T. shelter the week of March19-March 26, 2014. Five partner churches will be serving in this ministry with us. As a site church there is much to be done before, during, and after the week of P.O.R.T. Please consider serving in some capacity as we open our church home to the homeless this Lenten season. Look for more information and sign up sheets mid-February.

MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat. Since that day, more than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. Be part of this movement that is sharing Gods love with those in need. Please give generously or donate canned soups on Souper Bowl Sunday on February 2. Every dollar and all canned goods will be donated to Thrive Peninsula (formerly D.U.C.O.) Join us after the worship service for the Souper Bowl luncheon. There will be many crock pots full of soups and chili as well as desserts for you to enjoy. If you would like to bring your famous chili or your all time favorite soup or would just like to bring a dessert please see Liz Marshall.

The Session has approved raising funds to purchase a van or bus. This vehicle will allow us to more efficiently transport children and adults to all Church events and provide a way for youth, seniors and others to travel to activities and service opportunities. If you would like to contribute, designate your check Church Vehicle Fund. If you would like to help with fund-raising, contact Verni Saunders at 8743923 or veryverni@verizon.net.

"Fit in February" -- February 16, 2014 Did you make New Year's resolutions about your physical fitness and health? Perhaps you are moving along beautifully with keeping those resolutions and need some additional information or encouragement. Perhaps the resolutions have already gone by the wayside. It's not too late to regroup and become more physically fit and healthy in 2014. Join us on Sunday, February 16 immediately following the worship service at Denbigh United for a presentation on health and fitness by Michael Hildebrand. Michael has been a wellness coach for more than 30 years and is an American College of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer working at the Victory YMCA. This program will help you make lifestyle changes that will benefit your health now and in the years to come. Please join us on February 16 to learn more. Light (and healthy!) refreshments will be served.

Fundraiser
Denbigh United Presbyterian Preschool Board
The playground for Denbigh United Presbyterian Preschool was in need of some reconstruction in order to comply with federal regulations from the Consumers Product Safety Commission. The Church, as well as the Preschool, uses this wonderful area for the enjoyment and exercise of the children. The expense incurred for this project (the contractor and more gravel) was not a budgeted expense item; therefore, we have settled on a fundraiser to help cover the cost. The Preschool Board members are featuring a sale of summer flower bulbs. The flower bulbs will arrive in April and bloom in the summer. We hope everyone will participate by purchasing some of the flower bulbs. The prices are very reasonable and the bulbs are of good quality. The colorful flowers, which will bloom this summer and for years to come, will remind all of us of Gods children. Orders will be taken up to the end of February. Please consider purchasing at least one or two of the packages. If you have any questions, please call or email Shirlie Anson, Phone: 757-874-1756 or shirlieanson@verizon.net. Brochures are available at the kitchen counter on Sundays.
