the van was left in the driveway. We arrived at the evacuation location at 11:30 a,m. Everyone looks dazed. The Chinooks were enormous. Dust and debris flew into the air every time one took off or landed. We have to turn away and cover our faces. I looked at the long, steep ramps leading into the helicopter, thought of my bad knees, and panicked. Suddenly, one National Guard grabbed my suitcase, another grabbed my arm and I was seated and strapped in before I knew what hit me, and before I could change my mind. About 50 people, dogs, cats, and luggage were stuffed aboard and strapped in. The take-off was so smooth that I didnt realize that we had left the ground. We were bussed to a large church after landing in Ft. Collins. It was odd to see people mowing their grass and walking their dogs. Didnt they know what was going on in the mountains? We rented a car and, after spending the night in a hotel, started the drive back to California. To say we were dazed and confused would be an understatement. It took several weeks for the mental fog to lift. 10/19/13 Saturday: The roads were again opened from Estes Park to Drake for residents. We flew back to retrieve our van and check on the house. The road was passable but looks like a war zone. I cried over the many homes destroyed. In the end, 200 miles of roads and 2,000 homes were destroyed and eight lives lost. Our house and the houses of our neighbors were spared any damage since we are high above the river. My thankfulness meter is at its highest and I wouldnt change our location for anything. Life has returned to a normal pace but for me, this is the new normal. I am more acutely aware of the world around me now. On the one hand, I feel more grateful for the simple things in life, friends, family, morning walks. Little slights and frustrations seem to be less important and worrisome. On the other hand, my senses have sharpened and my feelings deepened when it comes to loss and

nce in a while there is a weekend with just enough things to do to make a comfortable weekend with enough to do, and time to be at home, too. Occasionally there is the weekend where you can lay back and not do anything. Those are special in their own way. Sometimes there are too many things to do. Like last weekend. gathering and at the National Western livestock show, too. I dont know if he entertained at the NW, but he was signing his books and meeting people there. Al Doc Mehl, Bill Barwick, and a bunch of others made the gathering a great place to be for the weekend, providing humor, wonderful music and the occasional tear jerking story, poem or song. We spent Sunday at the National Western Livestock Show and Rodeo, in Denver. As we were walking from the parking lot to the nearest building, a fellow, walking behind us, asked if we were going to the rodeo. We answered, Sure are. How

Well, we didnt hesitate to tell him wed be tickled to get a couple of free tickets. He said he was given a couple too many and handed them to us. They were the best tickets weve ever had for that rodeo. Five rows back, with the perfect angle to see the bucking chutes. I hope we didnt embarrass him with our enthusiastic thank yous. ily homes with 256 sold in 2013 up from 252 in 2012. Its a 1.6% increase and nothing to write home about, but as of the end of August, we were up 12.3%. There were 196 homes on the market at the end of 2013, compared to 238 a year ago. This is a 17.6% drop in inventory and a very favorable number. Combined with the increase in the price of median sales of homes sold in 2013 to $331,250 from $300,000, the indication is that this market is going up. There is a 9.3 month supply of homes on the market and if this number drops to 6 months, we would officially move into a sellers market.
Vacant land - In 2013, 36 lots sold compared to 46 a year ago, which is a 21.7% drop. There were 156 lots available for sale as of the end of the year compared to 167 a year ago. This could be because people who were trying to sell their lots have taken them off the market. The median price for lots sold in 2013 was $105,000 compared to $150,000 a year ago. If you have a lot for sale in the Estes Valley, you have a 23% chance of selling it in the next 12 months as we have a 52 month supply of lots on the market now.
