Here are some of our student success stories:

Student: From:

Fernanda Mexico

Program: Worked at:

Workplace English Diploma Movie Theatre

GV helped me to improve my English, have fun and make friends around the world. I never felt alone when I was looking for a job because CareerQuest always was with me giving me support. My job helped me to have more confidence to speak in English: fast + slang. I like my job because the atmosphere is great and I also can see movies which help me also with my learning.

Student: From:

Mi Yeon Korea

Program: Worked at:

Career English Diploma Marketing Company

I had a great time in GV. Especially Business Program was helpful to interview and get a job. We practiced answering the phone, leaving memo...the most useful thing was a presentation. It made me get confidence and break my bad habit when I speak English in front of people as well. I really like my workplace. I usually update the database that I should find new contacts or modify correctly and sometimes I help the design team when they are busy. Through this internship experience, I got more confidence. It must be good memories and useful when I apply for companies in Korea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I take the Language Coop Program? The Language Coop Program is designed to give you a chance to improve your English language skills in the classroom, and then in a real-world environment. Students advance all language skills, but especially their speaking and listening skills, workplace-specific vocabulary and expressions, and confidence using the language for workplace communication. You will also be able to add Canadian job experience to your resume. What is a Language Coop Practicum? A Language Coop Practicum is a job placement at a company where you will have the opportunity to practice language skills learned in the classroom in a real workplace environment. Work experience positions are entry-level positions and are not guaranteed to be in a specific company or job. How much money will I make? WED: students typically make minimum wage, which is currently $10.25/hr. Since LCP students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week, students should expect to make $500-800 per month on average. CED: students do unpaid internships, so there is no monetary compensation for these jobs. What kind of work will I be doing? WED: Casual Work in customer service positions usually in the following industries: food service, hospitality and retail. CED: Internship usually in an office environment in work typical of the following fields: administration, media, human resources, accounting, engineering, marketing, tourism, etc. For fields other than general administrative, students should have some related employment or educational background. Where will I work? Work Practicum companies are located in the Greater Toronto Area and are accessible by public transportation. As Toronto is very big, students should expect up to a 90 minute commute to work. You will be consulted first if we are considering a placement for you that is outside the GTA. How do I find the job? There are two program options, full-service and self-placement. For full-service, we will find you the job interviews, but it is your responsibility to perform well in the interview and work hard at your job. We expect you to show initiative, commitment and be professional. For the self-placement program, you will find your own job, but the employer must be contacted by Global Village first and the job approved for the program. What are you looking for on my resume and test? All applicants are checked to make sure that minimum program requirements are met, as specified on the first page of this document. Your completed Workplace English Test will be checked to make sure your goals can be matched to the objectives of the program, and that you have a realistic chance to reach a high enough English level to start working within your given time frame. How do I get my diploma? Your diploma will only be issued after completion of the in-class study component and a work practicum. Full attendance is required in both parts, as well as meeting the criteria outlined on the first page of this document. During work, students are responsible for contacting their Coop Practicum Supervisor every week to give updates on the number of hours worked and progress on their English. After finishing your practicum, you will complete an employment report, update your resume, write an exit test, and attend an exit interview where you will receive your diploma. Global Village Toronto staff look forward to welcoming you to our Language Coop Program and guiding you through a fantastic learning experience for your future!
