Eddy Current Technology

Eddy current testing (ECT) is the best method for inspection of non-ferrous tubing. It can detect and size defects affecting tubing such as steam erosion, baffle cuts, pitting, and cracking. Eddy current is especially good for detection of defects under support plates. In a basic bobbin probe, two coils are excited with an alternating electrical current. The coils produce a magnetic field that induces eddy currents along the circumference of the tube. If a defect disturbs the eddy current flow, the impedance of the coil will change and be measured by the acquisition unit. Using two frequencies, it is possible to eliminate the support plate disturbance and only keep the relevant flaw information. Using three or four frequencies permits defect discrimination against foreign objects (loose bolt), iron or copper deposit. This inspection technique is suitable for austenitic stainless steel such as SS304/SS316, brass (70/30), Inconel, titanium, copper-finned, and other materials.

Eddy Current Array Tubing Technology

Eddy current array (ECA) is the most advanced technique available to inspect non-ferrous tubing. The array configuration allows high resolution inspection without compromise on the pulling speed. ECA probes can be used to detect and size various types of defects such as corrosion, pitting, and cracking (circumferential and axial). Defects located near or under tube support plates or tubesheets can be easily detected with ECA probes. Typical ECA probes use multiple individual coils positioned in a specific pattern around the circumference of the probe. These coils are excited and read in a multiplexed sequence that allows full tube inspection without mutual influence between adjacent coils and still allowing a uniform sensitivity to localized defect whatever their position in the tube. Eddyfis software, Magnifi, offers best-in-class C-scan representation. Advanced data processing and landmark detection are available to improve defect detection, localisation and characterisation. Sizing curves are available in C-scan to provide faster analysis and reporting.

DefHi Probe
HIGHLIGHTS

Improved mechanical design Heavy-Wall Option One-Pass Combination Bobbin plus Array Probe Sizing of Circumferential and Axial Cracks1

Optimal Resolution and Uniform Sensitivity with Oval-Coil Technology2 Uncompromised Durability (highly kink-resistant cable, replaceable centering devices)

The DefHi probe is a high-denition, multiplexed eddy current probe designed for inspecting the non-ferromagnetic tubing found in condensers, feedwater heaters, and heat exchangers. It is especially efcient at detecting circumferential cracks at tube support plates and tubesheets (a major limitation of bobbin probes). The probe also detects and sizes usual defects such has wear, corrosion, pitting (even micro-pitting), and it will even detect stress corrosion cracking1. The probes multichannel design provides rotating probe performance at bobbin probe speed in a single pass. The DefHi probe provides a uniform and high-denition sensitivity for identication of defects in any orientation. Eddys patent-pending DefHi probe thus represents the utmost in ECT tubing inspection performance. Our latest addition is a heavy wall (HW) frequency range option that allows inspection of thicker tubes or high-conductivity materials. This option contains 50% less coils but can be run at much lower frequencies.
For available diameters and increments, see the Selection Guide on the next page.

Remote Field Technology

Remote eld testing is the best method for inspection of ferrous tubing. RFT has an equal sensitivity to ID and OD indications and can detect and size defects affecting tubing such as steam erosion, bafe cuts, and pitting. Several probe designs are available for wall loss measurement, pit sizing, and aw detection hidden by a support plate. RFT is a through-transmission technique where the receiver coil senses the flux lines that cross tube walls twice. Detector coils are separated from the exciter coil by a distance equivalent to 2 to 3 times the tube outside diameter. Remote Field Testing is suitable for carbon steel such as SA-179, SA-214, boiler tubes, ferritic stainless steel (SS439), nickel, and other ferromagnetic materials. A special graphical representation of the RFT technique, called voltage plane, can be used for accurate and reliable analysis of absolute signals. In voltage planes, defects can be easily sized for depth and volume. Furthermore, voltage planes allow for discrimination against permeability variations. Eddyfis software, Magnifi, offers best-in-class voltage plane implementation. It allows extrapolation of long and taper defects, easily stores and retrieves nominal tube signal, and simultaneously compensates for material variations for absolute and differential signals.

Single Driver Probe Standard

HIGHLIGHTS

Preamplier in the probe head (30 dB) Optimized for absolute signal analysis Uncompromised durability Highly kink resistant cable Low friction noise 19-Pin Amphenol connector

Eddys standard single driver probes set a new standard in durability. Also, since they produce a similar response from their driver and receiver coils, they are optimized for absolute signal analysis. Their attached cable is made with a strong, highly kink resistant nylon material. At 20,0 mm (0.787 in.) and above, the probes body is made of advanced lightweight polymer. Below this diameter, probe bodies are offered with a stainless steel sleeve. These standard single-driver probes are particularly well-suited for the detection of most common defects (corrosion, erosion, wear, pitting) and for use in the ferromagnetic tubing found on feedwater heaters, heat exchangers, and pipings.

IRIS (Internal Rotary Inspection System - UT)

This inspection technique relies on a transducer to generate an ultrasonic pulse oriented parallel to the axis of the tube (flooded with water beforehand). Ultrasound waves are reflected by a mirror and propagate towards the tube outer wall: they are partially transmitted inside the ID wall and eventually reflected by the OD. Knowing the ultrasonic velocity of the tube material, we can assess the wall thickness using the time-of-flight difference between the two surfaces. Water circulation is rotating the mirror, ensuring the whole tube is inspected. IRIS is particularly versatile, as it is suitable for ferrous and non-ferrous materials and allows detection of corrosion, pitting, and thinning on a wide range of tube diameters and wall thicknesses.

Ectane instruments have been sold in more than 30 countries over 6 continents, and in all target markets including power generation, oil & gas, aerospace, mining, and research labs and universities. Sales have virtually been split 50-50 between surface applications and tube inspections. Ectane now ships in all congurations including the Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS) technology option. In many ways, we believe that the Ectane redenes the potential of electromagnetic technologies for tube NDT inspections.

Small and Light

Key to the Ectane is the form factor and packaging. The instrument is compact, at roughly 610 in3 (10 liters). Its 100% magnesium alloy casing comes in at less than 15 lb (5,9 kg) (with batteries and multiplexer). Such a light instrument does not need to be carried in a backpack or some kind of trolley; you can simply carry it in your hand.

Sealed Enclosure
With its rugged and completely sealed enclosure, you can use the Ectane in the worlds most inhospitable inspection environments, be it a nuclear contaminated area or a highly dusty environment.

Inspection Flexibility
The Ectane provides new features that will add flexibility to your inspection programs. The plug-and-play connectivity of the instrument and the self-calibration tool can all help increase the productivity and general efficiency of your team. The instruments two batteries can be used as your main power source, or as backup, should power from the outlet be interrupted during the acquisition.

ADVANCED EDDY CURRENT DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS SOFTWARE

Eddy presents Magni, the most comprehensive, and reliable acquisition and analysis software for multi-technology surface and tube inspections. Magni is considered the preferred solution for mission-critical inspections that demand data storage and advanced analysis.

Compatibility Legacy
Magnifi can drive the Ectane as well as TC7700 and MS5800 instruments. Magnifi reads back most data files acquired by MS5800 and TC7700 product line instruments and setup files created with ECVision software. Magnifi is also compatible for dual use and mixed-technology inspections with Zetecs UltraVision. It even exports tube data in tubesheet mapping software such as TubePro, CARTO, or TSD-compatible formats.

Forward-thinking
Magnifi is Windows XP-/Windows 7-compatible (32- and 64-bits) and offers three independent but perfectly integrated operating modes: setup, acquisition, and analysis. The program provides the detailed features and specific tools required for advanced array technology, RFT, and IRIS. It also provides detailed and customizable reporting features that can be matched to a variety of inspection needs and environments. Finally, Magnifi is fully supported, with a SDK program, a full-fledged customization program, technical support, user documentation, and training.

So long BootP!
An innovation of particular interest is Magnifis plug-and-play connectivity with Ectane. The days of BootP voodoo sessions are gone. Magnifi also provides options for hardware keys and PC-dedicated software keys.

TubePro
This is the latest generation of 2D and 3D heat exchanger tube mapping software program. It is designed for inspection, testing, data management, tracking and reporting for the NDE/NDT industry. Eddyfi has partnered with ISS because we share a philosophy of easy to learn and simple to use. Despite is apparent simplicity, TubePro allows for advanced reporting, automated 3D visualization and rapid tube map creation. The use of fully customizable drawing and report templates along with automated 2D and 3D defect data import ensures fast, accurate and consistent reporting throughout any organization. TubePros user interface and reports can easily be translated into any language. Version 4 also supports multiple drawings, corrosion projections, multiple inspection reports, boiler drawings, 3D hairpin and multiple connected U-Tube sections and more.
