Third Sunday In Ordinary Time ! January 26, 2014

HONORING THE ALTAR SOCIETY
On Sunday, February 2, 10:40am (right after Mass) the Peace and Justice Committee---on behalf of the parishioners---will host a Tea Social in Carvlin Hall to thank the Altar Society for all their contributions to our parish. Tea, coffee, and baked goods will be served. Please stop after Mass on Jan. 25-26 to sign the cards of appreciation that will be presented to the ladies at the tea. Bingo is finally here! Today Sunday, January 26th, 13pm in Carvlin Hall. Bill Leathers has been exercising his Bingo voice! It is a fun time for all: good food, good prizes, good company. $5 admission covers initial Bingo card, snacks, prizes. Last year was a hit and this should year should be pretty fun. Bring your family and friends!

PARISH BINGO TODAY!

Many of us are familiar with 'Jake' who was been our 'homeless' friend for more than twelve-plus years. Easily recognized by his tall 6' frame, long gray hair and beard, and, of course, the leather hat. He attended many of our parish events, helped Ed set up tables, and even helped mow the lawn and emptied the garbage when Ed was on vacation. Last winter, after a severe illness, the VA/SS helped Jake get into his own small apartment downtown---and he loved it. Our friend Jake died quietly in his sleep on Christmas. Sunday, Feb.23 the 9:30 Liturgy will be offered in his memory.

IN MEMORY OF JAKE:

TRANSPORTATION NEEDED?
We would like to connect: 1) people who would like a ride to Mass on the weekends, and 2) those who would be willing to transport to and from Mass for three months. If you would like to participate in either of these options, please contact the parish office.

Our directories have arrived and are available in the back of the Church as well as the parish office. Each family who had their photo taken receives a directory. If you did not have your picture taken, but would like a directory, there is a suggested $10 donation to help cover the cost of our expanded centennial directory.

CHURCH DIRECTORIES!

PASTORAL CORNER

'The people that lived in darkness have seen a great light!

This passage from the First Reading from Isaiah and quoted again in the Gospel passage from Matthew with the particular references to the lands of Zebulon and Naphtali might make us this we are back in Advent Time. Matthew also tells us that after the arrest of John, Jesus left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum in the region of Galilee. The territory once occupied by the tribes of Zebulon and Naphtali, later known as Galilee was the most northerly part or Israel. Because it bordered on pagan territory it would have been associated with darkness. It was the first province of Israel to be conquered by Assyria in 732 BC. Isaiah predicted future liberation for the people of that region. In his Gospel, Matthew compares the beginning of Jesus public ministry as the coming of a great light to a people living in darkness, he sees Isaiah's prophecy fulfilled in Jesus. Later Jesus himself would describe himself and his ministry in a similar vein:I am the light of the world. As members of Christs body, the Church, it is our task to continue to shine the light of Christ into the dark parts of our own lives and of the world in which we live. Both we and the world need the healing power of Christs love and light. Each of us is called to that task and that light. But, it must begin with ourselves letting the light and love of Jesus heal our angers and hurts and resentments and jealousies, our intolerances and hatreds; letting the light and love of Jesus cleanse us and purify us, making us true instruments of his light and love. The Prayer of St. Francis aptly describes this task and is perhaps the most well known reflection on this theme. The Irish writer and theologian Flor McCarthy, SDB, has written a similar reflection describing what might happen in our world if we but let Christs light and love work fully in our own lives: PRAYER / REFLECTION Lord, make me an instrument of your love. Where the darkness of loneliness reigns let me bring the light of friendship. Where the darkness of bitterness reigns let me bring the light of forgiveness. Where the darkness of hurt reigns, let me bring the light of healing. Where the darkness of discord reigns, let me bring the light of harmony. Where the darkness of sadness reigns, let me bring the light of joy.

COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND !Taking Communion to our parishioners who are homebound is an important ministry of our parish. It is one of the

Corporal Works of Mercy mentioned by Christ. It is our way of reaching out to them as members of our faith community and at the same time giving them the opportunity to receive the Eucharist at least once or twice a month. If you are interested in this ministry please call the parish office. If you are homebound or know someone who is homebound (either in their own home or in an assisted living facility) please call the office to request Communion.

LOST AND FOUND

Please come and check the Lost and Found located in the parish office. We have a collection of hats, coats and mittens. All items will be donated to goodwill if not claimed. Thank you.
