LIBRARY OF TIBETAN WORKS AND ARCHIVES

Ladakhi Histories
LOCAL AND REGIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Edited by John Bray

The Leader of the Ladakh Lopchak Mission in Lhasa in 1921. Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of an Indian reprint of Ladakhi Histories. The book was rst published by the distinguished academic publishing house Brill in the Netherlands, and contains 25 research papers from the International Association of Ladakh Studies (IALS). This book points to Ladakhs distinct local identity, but argues that its historical development can best be understood in a wider regional perspective, taking into account inuences from Tibet as well as other parts of South and Central Asia. It draws on contributions from historians, art historians, linguists and anthropologists. Their sources include Ladakhi historical documents, comparative linguistic research, visual evidence from temple architecture and inscriptions, Mughal biographies, European travel accounts, government records, trade receipts, and local oral tradition. Taken together, the volume provides a much richer view of Ladakhi history than was previously available, and makes a signicant contribution to the study of the wider Himalayan region.
