MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION PAPERS: POLICY AND STYLE OF QUESTIONS

Time limit and number of questions per MCQ assessment All modules (other than Pharmacy Practice 2, 3 and 4 - see individual module convenors for details) will consist of 40 MCQs to be completed in a time period of 45 minutes. Styles and mix of questions A total of 4 styles of MCQ are used, namely: Style I simple style, one correct answer from 4 or 5 options Style II - list of 4 or 5 answers to choose from, answers may be used more than once Style III - 3 statements and identify which combination is/are true Style IV - assertive/reasoning style The differing styles will be introduced to papers at various stages as indicated below; MSOP policy for mix of MCQ styles for 2010-11 academic session Stage 1 75% of questions in style 1 plus 25% in style II (only 4 possible answers for this stage only) Stage 2 50% in Style 1 with 5 choices, 25% in style II plus 25% in style III Stage 3 50% style I, 20% style II, 20% style III and 10% style IV (with open book in PP3) Stage 4 As above with open book used in PP4 Extent of material covered in each MCQ In general the subjects covered in each MCQ will relate to material taught in that term (there are exceptions). The Module Convenors are responsible for advising the teaching period to be covered by each mcq assessment and relevant teaching cut off date eg whether term 2 mcq will cover material taught in term 2 only or both terms and the last teaching session that will be included eg can work taught in the week prior to interim assessments also be included.
