%!% &nt od'ct#on .ental retardation refers to an extensive handicap in the development of an individual3s brain and conduct with respect to their age. Though few with this inefficient growth are very good at adaptive skills and few also do their task on themselves and few are not even considered as a disabled, but mostly all have a

longing retardation 4.atson 5., %11+6. & mentally disabled person3s intellectual growth is obstructed and stopped at a certain age. I took up this topic as a study but the main element was to pick the institute that I could approach for my study and interview. &fter considering various options I finalised to visit ,78&*9&" :D70&TI;8 ";0I:T!, .7.2&I, I8DI&, for doing my study. It is an institute that deals with educating the disabled children and is a very old organisation in this industry. <or meeting the students of the institute I went to the principal of the school who had been kind enough to permit me to interact with the kids. I was taken for a round in all the classes after which I picked up ' random students for the interview of which ( boys *ajat 4/6, "hailesh 4##6, &bhay 4#(6 and % girls ,ranjali 4#$6 and .anali 4#%6. I choose these kids as each of them belonged to different age group and were different from the other.

%!( ABHA) The first kid I choose was &bhay a #( years old boy. I chose him because he was the only boy there who was not interested in what was going in the class and had a very short memory life. =earning the basics was also difficult for him. 2ut what he liked the most was to play guitar and also played a piece for me. >e
4

wanted to get appreciation for his skill and was craving for it. >is disability was detected soon after his birth. >e always wants attention and despite being a #( year old he still behaves like a ) year old boy. >e was not interested in studies but anything related to art be it drawing or music or colouring was of his interest. ?hen I spoke to him he spoke very well and also showed his drawing. >e had a very neat and beautiful writing and properly remembered the names of both of his parents and their phone numbers. 2ut he did not remember his residence address. ?hen asked about the school, he said he liked the school as here he is taught the things he likes, like playing guitar, colouring etc and what he dislikes about school is that they are told to study and are also told to do their home work. ;f all the kids I met, he was the most creative child.

%!* SHA&LESH The next child was shailesh a ## year old boy. >e was a very shy child and did not like to talk to others. >e did very well till he was in class %, but after that he started creating problems and lacked interest in studies. >e is a very demotivated child and feels that he cannot do any work on himself. >e did not
5

mingle with others and wanted to be left all alone. >e always sat alone and did not like to share his place with others. If he was forced to share then he would trouble the child sitting with him. >e always sat on the last benches and never had the confidence to look into the teachers eyes. >e however had a great memory and when asked he remembered my full name and that too very confidently. >e has a great memory and so he remembers what all was said and done in the class. ?hen asked what he likes the most about the school he said he likes to study and what he dislikes the most is that he has to be in groups and be with many people at a time and cannot be left alone. >e spoke to me after making repetitive re@uests and he took the longest time in the interview.

%!+ RA,AT The last boy that I met was *ajat a nine year old hyperactive and difficult child. >e had various issues in meeting me and when was told to meet me he simply refused and when compelled he lost control and started behaving in an appropriate and destructive manner. >e started screaming and hitting his
6

teacher. ?hen this did not work out he also went ahead to hitting his hand on the wall and on the bench and hurting himself. >e threw his books away and behaving weirdly. "uch as aggression or self-injury are often observed in children with mental retardation. 2ut finally when he went for the interview and I asked what he likes about the school he said the self defensive practices like karate and outside games that are taught to them are the ones that he likes the most and when asked what he dislikes the most about the school he said listening to the teachers and then he also added that meeting me was what he disliked the most. ?hen I asked on did he get hurt on banging his hand to the wall he replied that this is not the first time he has done something like this and he hits even harder. This means that for such kind of retardation, the more the retardation, the more will be the behaviour problems.

%!- $RAN,AL& The first girl that I met was the #$ year old and the eldest kid of the class ,ranjali. "he was the eldest girl in her class of '1. "he had a very short memory and an extremely poor concentration. "he could answer the @uestions of what was taught just #'- %1 minutes earlier and then would find it difficult in
7

recollecting it again. It was very difficult to get her concentration and interest on us as she did not make an eye contact. "he had a habit of looking on the floor and ignoring things. "he stays in her own imaginary world and reel life. "he keeps on talking to herself and that too very silently. "he was a very obedient child and did not have any objections and issues in talking to me. "he @uietly came along with me to answer my @uestions. 2ut it was very difficult to speak to her as she never looked at me. ?hen I started my interview I had to repeat my each @uestion thrice for her to answer them and took even longer for me to understand what she said as she looked at the floor and spoke very softly and not very clearly. ?hen asked on what she likes about the school she gave a particular teachers name and on what she dislikes about the school, she said everything besides that teacher. Though she was soft spoken she had an under developed language and speech.

%!. MANAL& The last child that I met was the #% year old .anali. "he was a rude girl who walked all around the class and disturbed others. "he disturbed in the sense went to others and screamed in their ears, hit others with legs and run away, jump off a bench and pretend to be hurt etc. "he only liked playing and talking.
8

"he did not like to listen to the teacher and did not like to study as she had problems in differentiating in similar looking words and similar looking shapes. These kids generally start to dislike studying after being repeatedly scolded for not properly recogniAing the words or characters or shapes. 2ut it also reflected that she is an extrovert as she had no issues talking to me and answering my @uestions. ?hen I asked her what is does she likes about the school she said everything and mainly the outdoor games like football, volley ball etc that were taught to them. ?hen I asked what she disliked about the school she said all the students that are around her and bother her. <or talking to her I had to continuously walk behind her and follow her wherever she was in the room as she did not stick to one place and was moving all around in the room.

%!/ CONCLUS&ON In the end I can only say that it is a great task that this organiAation is doing by teaching such children and enabling them to take care of themselves and protect themselves in the society. It is extremely difficult for a new person i.e. not a trained teacher but this institute makes it easier for the society to deal with these
9

children as they become more society friendly. Teaching students with mental retardation appropriate social and interpersonal skills is one of the most important functions of special education and this institute is very good in doing it and is a great success and help to the society. I am also highly obliged to the institute ,78&*9&" :D70&TI;8 ";0I:T!, .7.2&I, I8DI&, and the ,rincipal of the institute to permit me and enable me to do my study. I am also very thankful to my faculty for allowing me to take this topic and help me in completing my study. This topic helped me to increase my knowledge on disabled children and gave me an opportunity to interact with such children. &n analysis of the intellectual performance and adaptive conduct of the people with mental disability refers to the absence of re@uired essentials. 2ut people with psychological disability are many in number and dissimilar groups including individuals with unlike characteristics. .any children and adults with mental retardation show persistence and interest in learning, gel and mingle with others, and have a positive impact on the people that are around them 4.atson 5., %11+6. :ven if there are widespread strategies given for dealing with these psychiatric and behavioral issues of people with mental problems, many more studies are re@uired for helping these people.
