2. A system is taken form state 1 to state 2 along a path A. During this process it
received 225 kJ energy and does 125 kJ work. If the system is taken from state 2 to
state 1 by a different path B, it is necessary to spend 175 kJ work on the system.
Determine the heat interaction along the path B. Suppose the system is restored
to state 1 from state 2 by an adiabatic path C, how much work has to the done on
the system? [16]
3. It is desired to design a tank to store 12k mol methane at 5.9 MPa and 302K.
Determine the size of the tank using the Red lich - Kwong equation of state. The
critical constants of methane are Pc = 4.60 MPa and Tc = 190.6K. [16]
4. A high velocity nozzle is designed to operate with steam at 700 KPa and 3000 C.
At the nozzle inlet, the velocity is 30ms−1 . Calculate the value of the ratio A/Ai
(where Ai is the cross-sectional area of the nozzle inlet) for the section, where the
pressure is 300 KPa. Assume that the nozzle operates isentropically. [16]
6. One mol nitrogen (Υ=1.4) at 0.12 MPa and 305 K has been subjected to a series
of processes as a result of which it reached the state P=0.60 MPa and 630 K.
Determine the change in entropy of nitrogen. Nitrogen may be treated as an ideal
gas. [16]

2. (a) What is the necessity of classifying properties into intensive or extensive prop-
erties?
(b) Classify the following into intensive or extensive properties with reasons, Total
energy, Temperature, Specific heat, Volume, Specific Volume. [6+10]
3. If one kmol of methane is stored in 0.31 m3 tank at 301K, estimate the pressure of
the gas using Red lich - Kwong equation of state. The critical constants of methane
are Pc = 4.60 MPa and Tc = 190.6K. [16]
5. A reversible engine operating between a reservoir at 600K and the ambient at-
mosphere at 300K drives a refrigerator operating between 240K and the ambient
atmosphere. Determine the ratio of energy rejected by both the devices to the
ambient atmosphere to the energy absorbed by the engine from the reservoir at
600K. [16]
8. A definite man of mercury is heated from 1 bar 200 C to 440 C under constant volume
conditions. What is the final pressure, if:
β = 0.182 × 10−3 K −1 ;
K = 4.02 × 10−6 (bar)−1 [16]
