1. (a) Define gauge pressure and absolute pressure.


(b) The pressure of a gas in a pipe line is measured with a mercury manometer
having one limb open to the atmosphere. If the difference in the height of
mercury in the two limbs is 562 mm, calculate the gas pressure. The barometer
reads 761 mm Hg, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.79m/s2 , and the density
of mercury is 13,640 kg/m3 . [6+10]
2. A system is taken from state 1 to state 2 along a path A. During this process it
received 200 kJ energy as heat and does 100 kJ work. If the system is taken from
state 2 to state 1 by a different path B, it is necessary to spend 150 kJ work on
the system. Determine the heat interaction along the path B. Suppose the system
is restored to state 1 from state 2 by an adiabatic path C, how much work has to
the done on the system? [16]
3. Find the density of chlorine gas at 155 bar and 521K, using the compressibility
factor chart. Data M.W = 70.91, w = 0.090, Tc = 417K, Pc = 77.1bar. [16]
4. Steam at 0.5MPa and 2020 C enters a nozzle with a velocity of 1m/s at the rate of
1kg/s and leaves as dry saturated steam at 0.1MPa. The energy loss as heat from
the nozzle is 10.3kJ/s. Calculate the exit velocity of steam. [16]
5. Two Carnot engines A and B are connected in series between two thermal reservoirs
at 1100K and 110K respectively. Engine A receives 1720 kJ of heat from the high
temperature reservoir and rejects heat to the Carnot engine B. Engine B takes in
heat rejected by engine A and rejects heat to the low temperature reservoir. If
engines A and B have equal thermal efficiencies, determine
(a) the heat rejected by engine B,
(b) the temperature at which heat is rejected by engine A. [16]
6. One kg of water at 277 K is brought into contact with a heat reservoir at 377 K.
When the water has reached 377 K, find the entropy change of the water, of the
reservoir, and of the universe. Specific heat of water is 4.187 kJ kg−1 K−1 . [16]
7. A refrigeration plant produces 0.14 kg/s of the ice at -60 C from water at 280 C. If
the power required to drive the plant is 25kW, determine the capacity of the ice
plant in tones and the actual COP. Cp of ice is 2.1 kJ kg−1 K−1 . [16]
8. Discuss in brief generalized correlation of thermodynamic properties for gass. [16]

1. (a) LPG, which is predominantly propane is used as a cooking gas. If a cylinder is


filled with 15 kg of LPG, determine the mole number of the gas in the cylinder.
(b) A gas mixture has the following molar composition: CO2 -20 mol%; CO-20
mol%;O2 -50mol% and N2 -10 mol%. Determine the mass in kg of 100 mol of
this mixture. [8+8]

2. A system is taken form state 1 to state 2 along a path A. During this process it
received 225 kJ energy and does 125 kJ work. If the system is taken from state 2 to
state 1 by a different path B, it is necessary to spend 175 kJ work on the system.
Determine the heat interaction along the path B. Suppose the system is restored
to state 1 from state 2 by an adiabatic path C, how much work has to the done on
the system? [16]

3. It is desired to design a tank to store 12k mol methane at 5.9 MPa and 302K.
Determine the size of the tank using the Red lich - Kwong equation of state. The
critical constants of methane are Pc = 4.60 MPa and Tc = 190.6K. [16]

4. A high velocity nozzle is designed to operate with steam at 700 KPa and 3000 C.
At the nozzle inlet, the velocity is 30ms−1 . Calculate the value of the ratio A/Ai
(where Ai is the cross-sectional area of the nozzle inlet) for the section, where the
pressure is 300 KPa. Assume that the nozzle operates isentropically. [16]

5. (a) What is Carnot principle?


(b) A cyclic heat engine operates between a source temperature of 7500 C and a
sink temperature of 280 C. What is the least rate of heat rejection per kW net
output of the engine? [6+10]

6. One mol nitrogen (Υ=1.4) at 0.12 MPa and 305 K has been subjected to a series
of processes as a result of which it reached the state P=0.60 MPa and 630 K.
Determine the change in entropy of nitrogen. Nitrogen may be treated as an ideal
gas. [16]

7. A water cooler supplies chilled water at 70 C, when water is supplied to it at 270 C


at a rate of 0.7 litres/min., while the power consumed is 200 Watts. Compare the
COP of this refrigeration plant with that of the ideal refrigeration cycle for a similar
situation. [16]

8. (a) Specify the form of equations of state in the energy representation.


(b) State the enthalpy minimum principle. [8+8]

constants of methane are Pc = 4.6 MPa and Tc = 190.6K. [16]
4. (a) What is a continuous system and how do we describe the state of such a
system?
(b) Compare and contrast the characteristics of control mass and control volume.

5. A reversible engine operating between a reservoir at 605K and the ambient at-
mosphere at 305 K, drives a refrigerator operating between 245K and the ambient
atmosphere. Determine the ratio of energy rejected by both the devices to the
ambient atmosphere to the energy absorbed by the engine from the reservoir at
605K. [16]
6. A system has a heat capacity at constant volume,
CV =AT2 , where A=0.042 JK−3 .
The system is originally at 210K, and a thermal reservoir at 110K is available.
What is the maximum amount of work that can be recovered as the system is
cooled down to the temperature of the reservoir? [16]
7. (a) What is a heat pump? List its applications.
