Writing an internationally excellent paper and how to extend your reach as a researcher
5th December 2013, 09.30am - 4:00pm, Room 2S705 (Frenchay campus) The UWE Researchers' Forum provides a platform for staff development in relation to pursuing a career centred upon academic research. This Researchers Forum event hot on the heels of the deadline for submissions to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) focuses upon the growing imperative to ensure that research outputs are of the highest quality and that they are well profiled and accessible. 9.30am - 10.00am Tea/coffee on arrival 10.00am - 12.30pm Session 1. Writing high quality research outputs what does a 3* paper look like?
This session will give you the opportunity to consider how to identify whether a research article is at the level of international excellence and how you can approach the writing of your own articles to maximize the prospects of them being judged to be at this standard. Two senior academic colleagues with a proven track record in this challenging matter will share their experiences, address questions and engage participants in discussion:

12.30pm - 1.15pm Lunch 1.15pm - 3.00pm Session 2 How to extend you reach as a researcher?
This session will explore some of the key aspects of how to ensure you promote your work and engage a wider audience beyond the academy. We will consider both how to develop your publication strategy and the creation of your research brand in the digital era. The first part, led by Dr Sarah-Louise Quinnell, will look at the role Open Access should or could play in your publication strategy. This will include: What we mean by Open Access (OA), OA journals and the REF, Creative Commons Copyright and Open Academia. The second part, led by Beverly Barker, explores how you develop and market your research brand in the digital era. This will include: How to think like a Brand, Digital Communications and Researcher Development and how to develop an academic digital communications strategy.

Dr Sarah-Louise Quinnell is a digital learning and methods specialist and the founder of Networked Researcher; A project set-up in 2010 to support Researchers and Academic institutions engage with digital scholarship and research methodologies. She is a featured blogger for SAGE publications Social Science Space project and the inaugural blog editor for NatCens New Social Media New Social Science network. As a digital learning consultant Sarah works with a range of organisations looking to develop e-learning strategies to support professional development and vocational learning. Ms Beverly Barker is a Marketing and Communications professional who is dedicated to inspiring and teaching today's talent to succeed and disrupt the future. Beverly specialises in communications strategy; teaching & researching across all areas of media, including direct, digital, data planning, testing strategies and using analytics to achieve objectives. Beverly works with UK clients & agencies through IDM & LSBU KTP consultancy projects. Awarded IDM Educator of the Year, 2012. Beverly is currently completing her PhD at London Southbank University.
