SECTION III OPERATION

1. INTRODUCTION This section provides the operating information to acquint the user with this Sweep Function Generator. The section incJudes panel features, measurement procedures for various applications.

2. PANEL FEATURES The front panel and Rear panel are shown in Figure 3-1 and Figure 3-2. Description numbers match the numbers on the figure. 1) Front Panel Features

(1 ) Power Switch Applies or Removes AC Power. Press the switch to turn the power ON -the counter display LED willlight. Press again to turn the power off. (2) Counter Display LED (6 Digit Seven Segment Yellow Color) (3) Freq. Range Switch This switch provides range selection for output. (4) Freq./Stop Freq. (Hz) Dial This is used to control the frequency of the output (9). The operating frequency is determined by the multiplying the dial reading by the FREQ. RANGE (3) setting. With the MODE (5) set to SWEEP, this dial indicates the frequency at sweep end. (5) Mode Switch This switch is used to select one of five generation modes: CW, TRIG, GATE, BURST, or SWEEP. (6) Function Switches These switches change the waveform of the output (9) to sine, triangle, or square wave. If all three switches are released ( ), DC voltage can be obtained by using the DC OFFSET (7) control. (7) DC Offset Control (Pull-On) This is used to superimpose DC voltage on the output (9). Pull this knob to use this function, and push it if superimposition is not necessary. (8) Attenuation (dB) Variable Control The outer knob controls the attenuation of the output (9) by O, 20, 40, or 60dB. The inner VARIABLE knob is used to adjust the output level continuously. With DC OFFSET setting to ON, the outer knob is used to adjust DC voltage together with the output; however, DC voltage cannot be varied by using the inner VARIABLE knob. (9) Output Terminal This output terminal has an impedance of 50 ohms. When terminated with 50 ohms, the terminal generates signals of 10 Vp-p (max.). (except for output with amplitude modulation) (10) TRIG Start Level Control This is used to specify start level when the MODE (5) is set to to TRIG, GA TE, or BURST. (11) Symmetry Control (Pull-On) Pull and turn this control knob to adjust the waveform symmetry of the output (9) and SYNC OUT (12) in the range of 20:80 to 80:20. When the control knob is pressed, the two waveforms are symmetrical. (12) SYNC Out Terminal This is a TTL level output terminal (with an impedance of 50 ohms) with a 1800 phase difference from that of the output (9). The symmetry of the output can be adjusted by using the SYMMETRY control (11). This terminal is used for synchronization with an externa I measuring instrument, TTL signal output, and checking the operating frequency by using a counter.

(13) TRIG IN Terminal This is the input terminal for trigger/gate signals when the MODE (5) is set to TRIG or GATE. TTL level input signals are used. (14) Counter Selector Switch Press the switch ( ) to external counter. Press again ( ) to internal counter. (15) External Counter IN Counter input connector for the external signal input. (16) AM Switch (ON , OFF ) Press this switch ( ) for amplitude modulation. The MOD IN terminal (17) is used to input modulation signals. (17) MOD IN Terminal This is the input terminal for amplitud e modulation. It provides an input impedance of about 10k ohms, a frequency range of DC to 1 MHz, and a maximum input voltage of 1OV (AC + DC) (18) LOG ( ) /LIN ( ) Switch

With the MODE switch (5) set to SWEEP, the LaG/UN switch enables logarithmic sweep or linear sweep to be selected. (19) SWEEP ( )/SET START ( ) Switch

This switch is used to set the sweep start frequency with the MODE (5) set to SWEEP. When the switch is pressed ( ) for SET ST ART, the sweep is stopped at the sweep start frequency. Then, connect the generator output to a frequency counter or oscilloscope, and specify a sweep start frequency by using the START knob (20). After the frequency is set, the sweep can be resumed by setting the switch to SWEEP ( ). The sweep stop frequency is set by using the FREQ. dial. (20) Start/MOD Level Control This is used to set the sweep start frequency and to change the amplitude modulation level. (21) Time 0.1-10s ( )/1-100ms ( ) Switch This switch is used to switch the time ranges for burst gate or sweep when the MODE switch (5) is set to BURST or SWEEP. (22) AM Carrier Level Control This is used to adjust carrier levels for amplitude modulation. With a setting around "O", carrier waves are suppressed and a double sideband (DSB) is obtained. (23) Symmetry (Pull-On)/Variable Variable (outer knob): This is used to adjust the burst/sweep time continuously in the range selected by the TIME switch (21 '). Turning the VARIABLE counterclockwise decreases the time. Symmetry (pull-on) (inner knob): Pull out to adjust the ON/OFF time for a burst and sweep time (both ways). When this knob is pushed in, the time ratio is 50: 50. 9

2) Rear Panel Features

(24) GCV OUT Terminal This terminal outputs a DC voltage in proportion to the oscillation trequency. The output impedance is about 600 ohms and the output voltage is 0 to 5V (with the FREO. dial set to "10" ) in the trequency range selected by the FREO. RANGE control (3). (25) SWEEP OUT Terminal This terminal is used tor sweep generator output. The output time and symmetry can be adjusted by using the TIME switch (21) and SYMMETRYNARIABLE control (23).

This output ignores the MODE switch (5) setting and can be used as an X-axis signal tor an oscilloscope, or as a VCG signal.

10

(26) SWEEP/BURST GATE OUT Terminal This is the gate signal (TTL level) output terminal for the sweep/burst mode. Fig. 3-3. shows the relationship between signals and time.

(27) VCG IN Terminal This is input terminal used to externally control the frequency of the output from terminals (9)and(12). A negative voltage applied to this terminal decreases the frequency, and a positive voltage increases it. With the FREQ. di al set to "10", negative voltage is applied to decrease the frequency to 1/1000 (maximum frequency ratio). The maximum input voltage is + 10V (AC + DC). (28) Fuse Holder Proper ampere fuse must be in compartment. (29) Voltage Selector Proper line voltage must be selected where this generator is used. (30) Receptable for AC Une Cable (31) Grounding Terminal This is connected to the main frame.

11

3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 1) Operating Precautions (1) Precautions for Input Voltaje All input and output terminals are con'nected for direct coupled circuitry. Do not apply external voltage to any output terminal. The output terminal (9) provides a maximum instantaneous input voltage of 5V (AC + DC). Consequently, if the voltage applied to the terminal exceeds this value, thE( internal circuitry wil! be damaged.

Also, take care to prevent input voltage exceeding the maximum input voltage value from being applied to the input terminals. (2) Output Connections The output terminal (9) has an output impedance of 50 ohms. Use a 50-ohm coaxial cable and a 50-ohm terminator for the output to obtain the proper attenuation and better frequency characteristics.

(3) Grounding Requirements For the safety of operating personnel, the instrument must be grounds. The offset pin on the power cable grounds the instrument when plugged into the proper receptacle.

3) Basic Signal Generation (Sine, Triangle, and Square Waves) The panel control settings required to generate sine, triangle, or square waves continu ously, and to vary the output frequency manually are as follows. Panel control MODE (5) FUNCTION (6) AM (16) SYMMETRY (11) FREQ. RANGE (2) FREQ. DiAL (4) DC OFFSET (7) ATTENUATION (8) Setting CW OFF Used if necessary Desired range Desired position Used if necessary Desired range

(1) Sine Wave Output The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the main sine wave, including spurious and harmonics, is less than 0.5% from 10 Hz to 50 kHz. The modulation sine wave distortion is les s than 2% THD from 10Hz to 10kHz. (2) Square Wave Output The RMS value of a symmetrical (50% duty cycle) square waveform is equal to its peak value. The rise or fall time is less than 25 nanosBconds betwBBn the 10% and 90% points of the p-p output square wave. The aberrations, or deviations from the final settling amplitude of the square wave after overshoot, will not vary more than 10% of the final value. (3) Triangle Output The RMS value of the triangle waveform is 0.557 times the peak value. The triangle ramp will not deviate from a straight line any more than 1 % of the total peak-to-peak value of the ramp. Non-linearity s, therefore, negligible. (4) SYNC Output The SYNC output supplies a one volt rectangular wave which is 1800 out of phase with the main generator output signal. The leading edge and the trailing edge of the SYNC pulse occur at the zero crossing point of the output waveform. The frequency and duty cycle of this pulse vary with the main output signal.

By using these settings and the TTL signal input to TRIG IN (13), one of the waveforms shown in Fig. 3-8 is output to the OUTPUT (9) connector.

15

In the trigger or gate mode, the output signal frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz and trigger input frequency range is DC to 100kHz. (TRIG ST ART LEVEL control) Fig. 3-8 shows the output waveforms obtained with the TRIG ST ART LEVEL (10) set in the middle. The TRIG START LEVEL is turned to adjust the level to start signal generation.

Fig. 3-10 shows the waveforms called Haver sine waves and Haver triangle waves which are used as trigger signals. 5) BURST Mode The instrument has a built-in burst gate oscillator used to generate burst waves during a cycle of 1 ms to 10s. The ratio of generation time and generation stop time can be adjusted by pulling and turning the inner knob of the SYMMETRY control (23). The panel control settings for the BURST mode are as follows.

Fig. 3-9 shows an output burst waveform. The trigger start level can be changed by using the same procedure as in Trigger/Gate Modes.

6) SWEEP Mode The sweep mode allows a linear or logarithmic sweep to be made at a sweep rate of 1 to 1: 100 in a specified frequency range. The sweep time can be set from 1 ms to 10s. Use the START IMOD LEVEL control (20) to set the sweep start frequency and the FREO. dial (4) to set the sweep end frequency. The panel control settings for the sweep mode are as follows.

TIME (21) SYMMETRY (23) VARIABLE (23) LIN / LOG (18) ATTENUATION (8)

To set a sweep frequency range, connect a frequency counter or oscilloscope to the OUTPUT .(9), turn the FREQ. dial (4) to specify the sweep end frequency, and then specify a sweep start frequency by using the ST ART /MOD LEVEL control (20). After the frequency range setting is made, the sweep is started when the pressed SET START / SWEEP switch (19) is pressed again and released ( ). Fig. 3-12 shows the waveforms and their relationship.

When a sweep start frequency has been specified by using the SET ST ART switch a sweep is started by pressing the switch. The sweep is ended at sweep completion. 7) Symmetry The symmetry of output waveforms can be varied by using the SYMMETRY control (11). When the control knob is pressed, output waveforms have a symmetry of 50: 50. If the control knob is pulled out and turned, the symmetry can be adjusted in a range from 20:80 to 80:20. The frequency range is limited to 1 MHz or less for symmetry control.

18

Note: When SYMMETRY control is activated, output frequency fluctuation is increased.

8) DC OFFSET / DC OUT The DC offset function enables superimposition of DC voltage on output waveforms. Superimposed voltage is limited to the waveform peak + DC with :t 5V when the output is terminated at 50 ohms. Without this termination, the voltage must be within :t 10V. If all FUNCTION switches (6) are released (pushed out), only the DC voltage is output. The DC offset function is activated by pulling the DC OFFSET knob (7) out. The knob must be turned clockwise to superimpose a positive voltage; it must be turned counterclockwise to superimpose a negative voltage. The VARIABLE knob of the A TTENUA TION control (8) cannot be used to change the DC offset voltage, but can be used to change the amplitude of output waveforms.

Note: The DC offset voltage is attenuated by the attenuator (O to 60dB). Even when the DC offset function is turned off, a residual offset voltage of 100mV (max.) remains.

19

The panel control settirg used to output DC Voltage only are as follows. Panel control FUNCTION (6) FREQ. RANGE (3) DC OFFSET (7) A TTENUA TION (8) Setting AII buttons released (Push all buttons out.) Range of x 1 00 or less Pull the knob 0 dB

A max. of I: 100CV output can be obtained at an open output terminal by adjusting the DC OFFSET knob. Because the output impedance is set to 50 ohms, the relationship between the output voltage and max. load current is as shown in Fig. 3-15.

9) Amplitude Modulation The instrument provides an amplitude modulation when an external modulation signal is supplied from the MOD IN terminal (17). The modulation signal frequency ranges from DC to 1 MHz. The maximum input voltage required for full (100%) modulation is 5Vp-p. The input impedance is about 10 kohms. The control panel settings used for amplitude modulation are as follows. Panel control MODE (5) FUNCTION (6) AM (16) SYMMETRY (11) FREO. RANGE (3) FREQ. dial (4) DC OFFSET (7)
AM CARRIER LEVEL (22) MOD LEVEL (20 )

Setting CW ON Pressed Desired range Desired position Used if necessary Desired level Desired modulation level

The extent of the amplitude variation is expressed as the percentage of modulation. The following formula defines the relationship between Fc and Fm (see Fig. 3-16)

20

21

10) VCG Operation The VCG (voltage controlled generator) provides output frequency control through the applied voltage to the VCG IN terminal (27). By applying a voltage of Oto 5V to the VCG IN terminal, a frequency of up to x 1000 can be obtained (The frequency multiplication of 1000 requires the FREQ. dial setting to "10" and an input voltage of - 5V.) The frequency modulation can be achieved by sending a modulation wave to the VCG IN terminal. The input impedance is about 10k ohms. Fig. 3-19 shows the relationship between the VCG IN voltage and output frequency.

When for example, the frequency range is set for x 1 k with a FREQ. dial reading of "10" (10kHz), and - 2V is applied to the VCG IN terminal, the output frequency is 6kHz indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 3-15. Note: Note that noise in the DC voltage or modulation signal supplied to the VCG IN may cause undesirable frequency modulation.

22

11) Combintation of Functions (1) Gated Sep Gated sweep operation can be provided when SWEEP OUT (25) and SWEEP/BURST GATE OUT (26) are connected as follows:

Panel control MODE (5) FUNCTION (6) AM (16) SYMMETRY (11) FREQ. RANGE (3) FREO. dial (4) DC OFFSET (7) SET ST ART ISWEEP (19) TIME (21) SYMMETRY (23) VARIABLE (23) ATTENUATION (8) TRIG START LEVEL (6)

Setting GATE OFF Pressed Desired range Desired position (sweep end frequency) Used if necessary SWEEP ( ) Desired range Pulled and turned clockwise fully Desired time setting Desired range Middle

The sweep end frequency is set by the FREO. RANGE control (3) and FREO. dial (4). When a sweep start frequency is to be changed, use external amplitude control (negative voltage) for the SWEEP OUT output.

23

(2) Output voltage sweep operation An output voltage sweep is made by using the amplitude modulation of the SWEEP OUT output (25). Fig. 3-21 shows the required connections for this operation.

See Section 9) Amplitude Modulation for details on the modulation factor adjustment.
