Based on Joseph Stalin, Napoleon uses military for e !his nine loyal atta " dogs# to intimidate the other animals and onsolidate his power. $n his supreme raftiness, Napoleon pro%es more trea herous than his ounterpart, Snowball. Snowball - The pig who hallenges Napoleon for ontrol of Animal Farm after the Rebellion. Based on &eon Trots"y, Snowball is intelligent, passionate, elo'uent, and less subtle and de%ious than his ounterpart, Napoleon. Snowball seems to win the loyalty of the other animals and ement his power. Boxer - The art-horse whose in redible strength, dedi ation, and loyalty play a "ey role in the early prosperity of Animal Farm and the later ompletion of the windmill. (ui " to help but rather slow-witted, Bo)er shows mu h de%otion to Animal Farm*s ideals but little ability to thin" about them independently. +e nai%ely trusts the pigs to ma"e all his de isions for him. +is two mottoes are ,$ will wor" harder- and ,Napoleon is always right.Squealer - The pig who spreads Napoleon*s propaganda among the other animals. S'uealer .ustifies the pigs* monopoli/ation of resour es and spreads false statisti s pointing to the farm*s su ess. 0rwell uses S'uealer to e)plore the ways in whi h those in power often use rhetori and language to twist the truth and gain and maintain so ial and politi al ontrol. Old Major - The pri/e-winning boar whose %ision of a so ialist utopia ser%es as the inspiration for the Rebellion. Three days after des ribing the %ision and tea hing the animals the song ,Beasts of 1ngland,2a.or dies, lea%ing Snowball and Napoleon to struggle for ontrol of his lega y. 0rwell based 2a.or on both the 3erman politi al e onomist 4arl 2ar) and the Russian re%olutionary leader 5ladimir $ly h &enin. Clover - A good-hearted female art-horse and Bo)er*s lose friend. 6lo%er often suspe ts the pigs of %iolating one or another of the Se%en 6ommandments, but she repeatedly blames herself for misremembering the ommandments. Moses - The tame ra%en who spreads stories of Sugar andy 2ountain, the paradise to whi h animals supposedly go when they die. 2oses plays only a small role in Animal Farm, but 0rwell uses him to e)plore how ommunism e)ploits religion as something with whi h to pa ify the oppressed. Mollie - The %ain, flighty mare who pulls 2r. Jones*s arriage. 2ollie ra%es the attention of human beings and lo%es being groomed and pampered. She has a diffi ult time with her new life on Animal Farm, as she misses wearing ribbons in her mane and eating sugar ubes. She represents the petit bourgeoisie that fled from Russia a few years after the Russian Re%olution. Benjamin - The long-li%ed don"ey who refuses to feel inspired by the Rebellion. Ben.amin firmly belie%es that life will remain unpleasant no matter who is in harge. 0f all of the animals on the farm, he alone omprehends the hanges that ta"e pla e, but he seems either unwilling or unable to oppose the pigs. Muriel - The white goat who reads the Se%en 6ommandments to 6lo%er whene%er 6lo%er suspe ts the pigs of %iolating their prohibitions. Mr. Jones - The often drun" farmer who runs the 2anor Farm before the animals stage their Rebellion and establish Animal Farm. 2r. Jones is an un"ind master who indulges himself while his animals la " food7 he thus represents Tsar Ni holas $$, whom the Russian Re%olution ousted. Mr. Frederick - The tough, shrewd operator of 8in hfield, a neighboring farm. Based on Adolf +itler, the ruler of Na/i 3ermany in the 9:;<s and 9:=<s, 2r. Frederi " pro%es an untrustworthy neighbor. Mr. Pilkin !on - The easygoing gentleman farmer who runs Fo)wood, a neighboring farm. 2r. Frederi "*s bitter enemy, 2r. 8il"ington represents the apitalist go%ernments of 1ngland and the >nited States. Mr. "#$mper - The human soli itor whom Napoleon hires to represent Animal Farm in human so iety. 2r. ?hymper*s entry into the Animal Farm ommunity initiates onta t between Animal Farm and human so iety, alarming the ommon animals. Jessie and Bluebell - Two dogs, ea h of whom gi%es birth early in the no%el. Napoleon ta"es the puppies in order to ,edu ate- them. Minimus - The poet pig who writes %erse about Napoleon and pens the banal patrioti song ,Animal Farm, Animal Farm- to repla e the earlier idealisti hymn ,Beasts of 1ngland,- whi h 0ld 2a.or passes on to the others.
