HOW APPLES PROCESSORS ARE

With an A7 quad core 64-bit processor being

Of course, many of the developments that

HOW APPLE IS FARING AGAINST THE
kLS1 CI 1nL MAkkL1
The last year has been another one of Apple
fendlng o an ever-lncreaslng array of markeL
rivals, albeit with a few especially familiar
foes sull presenL and correcL: Samsung and
Android. So, how is Apple faring against
adversaries old and new, and how can we
expect it to do in 2014?
There has certainly been a lot of good news
on LhaL fronL for Apple laLely. lor example, lL
was recenLly conrmed by markeL research
rm comScore lnc. LhaL Apple reLalned lLs

dominant share of the smartphone market
|n the three months to the end of Cctober, |t
even grow|ng s||ght|y from 40.4 per cent to
40.6 per cent. This compared to the 25.4 per
cent mustered by Samsung, while HTC and
LG Electronics both saw declines in their own
shares.
1haL same reporL showed Lhe conunued
supremacy of Androld among operaung
systems, however, which brings us nicely
onLo Lhe sub[ecL of markeL share - and
how important it is for Apples longer term
prospects. 1he verd|ct? Not very. Aher a||,
Andro|d products are ohen assoc|ated w|th
the cheapest end of the market, so its easy
to leave those to the masses rather than
compromise Apples long-treasured premium
products for a premium price brand message.
Anyone who saw the not-exactly-cheap-and-
cheerful price tag for the entry-level iPhone
5c probably detected that Apple had this
amLude, buL furLher evldence of whaL Lhe
Cuperuno rm Lruly cares abouL came ln
a recent research note by Needham & Co
analyst Charlie Wolf, as reported by Apple
Insider. Wolf said that a smaller and more
engaged user base bringing app developers
greater revenue was preferable for Apple
to a larger user base with less interest in
using their devices, meaning less money for
developers.
Wolf wrote: Observers, seduced by the
simplicity of the metric, have elevated
markeL share as Lhe sole drlver of nanclal
performance Lo a posluon LhaL far exceeds
reality. Indeed, there appears to be no
correlauon beLween markeL share and
Lhe vlablllLy of a plauorm. ln surveylng Lhe

This isnt to suggest that market share is
completely important to Apple. It simply
means that as long as Apple users stay loyal

THE CONTINUING BIG BATTLE
8L1WLLN ALL AND ANDkCID
As aforemenuoned, lL's Lhe rlvalry wlLh
Androld LhaL wlll be a parucular focus for
Apple ln 2014, and luC's predlcuons for Lhe
next year indicate the scale of the challenge
for Tim Cook, Sir Jony Ive and co. With
smarLphone and LableL sales upped Lo grow
by 12 per cenL and 18 per cenL respecuvely
over the year, IDC sa|d that "dramanc ga|ns"
were be|ng made by Goog|e |ay]Andro|d
downloads and revenues, which would mean
a slgnlcanLly narrowed" app ecosysLem
value gap.
It will all help Android phones and tablets to
conunue selllng ln greaLer volumes Lhan Lhelr
iOS counterparts, although IDC added that
Apple would retain its value edge thanks to a
comblnauon of an esLabllshed app ecosysLem
and higher average selling prices.
But it was far from the only measure
suggesung susLalned Apple sLrengLh for some
ume Lo come, wlLh Lhe |hone pred|cted
to have 68 per cent of the US smartphone

is the verdict of Horace Dediu, the peak - of

the basis that theres no technology that

When has Dediu predicted that market

While Samsung does air commercials and
prints ads poking fun at the iPhone, they
seem Lo be a llule more worrled Lhan Lhey

belleve LhaL Apple ls behlnd Lhe umes and
that Samsungs own mobile phones are
far superlor, yeL for all LhaL, Lhey were sull

Apple released their two newest mobile

despite Wall Street lowering the value
of Lhe Cuperuno-based Lechnology
[uggernauL, and desplLe Lhe medla clalmlng
that Apple is all but done and that theyll

agaln, people were physlcally ghung ln Lhe
stores over the newest iPhones, and a huge
collecuon of homeless people have been
le sLranded far away from home, or aL
least where they call home.
In July Apple re|eased numbers showing
some success, announcing that they set a
new !une CuarLer record ln 2013. llscally
the numbers arent that impressive. Just
a year ago, revenue was aL $33 bllllon
wlLh a neL proflL of $8.8 bllllon, or $9.32
per diluted shared. This year it moved
up Lo $33.3 bllllon wlLh a neL proflL of
$6.9 bllllon or $7.47 per dlluLed share.
Yet, a year ago they only sold 26 million
28
iPhones, but sold 31.2 in 2013. iPads
and Macs tell a different story with both
of them losing sales this year. It seems
iPhones are keeping Apple alive.
Add to this confusing news that Apple
has had a very damaging year on Wall
Street. Last year, App|e's stock dropped
by 7.8% one month after the iPhone 5
was released. It had never dipped that
dramatically before. After the original
iPhone was released it dipped 6.9%, the
iPhone 3 1.1%, the iPhone 3GS 3.9%, and
the iPhone 4 0.9%. After the release of
the iPhone 4S stocks were raised by 8.2%.
On September 21, 2012, the stock was
valued aL $703.07. Cne year laLer lL ls
worLh only $467.41, yeL has dlpped much
lower over the past year.
Looking at those numbers, youd expect
the scene at Apple Stores on release day
Lo be raLher subdued. 1haL [usL wasn'L Lhe
case. Two men were arrested at 7:30 AM
ln asadena aer walung ln llne overnlghL
for Lhe sLore doors Lo open, Lhen ghung
with each other. They are now looking at
misdemeanor charges. Its unknown what
sparked Lhe ghL, buL assumably lL had
something to do with the iPhone.
A th|rd man was placed on a 72-our mental
healLh hold aer he ran lnLo Lhe sLreeL ln an
enraged state. It wasnt because he wasnt
allowed a phone, though. His issue was over
29
a slmple $40 ln a scheme LhaL wenL horrlbly
wrong for several homeless people.
An enterprising man decided to try and
beat the system. Apple was only allowing
each person to buy two iPhones on site.
Yet this man decided to buy as many as
he could to sell overseas. This meant he
needed Lo nd oLher people wllllng Lo sLand
in line for him to get their quota of two
phones each. Pe declded Lo oer homeless
people sLaylng ln a Los Angeles shelLer $40

Lo geL Lhelr Lwo phones. Aer Lhey handed
hlm Lhe vouchers, Lhey'd geL Lhe $40.
Severa| home|ess peop|e took th|s man
up on h|s offer. They were driving to the
Pasadena Apple Store by the vanload.
The problem arose when these down-on-
their-luck individuals actually entered the
store with their vouchers. Their vouchers
turned out to be useless, and they
hadnt been given any money to actually
purchase the phones, so they were
coming away empty-handed.
The enterprising businessman was kicked
out of the store and police were called.
They did not arrest him, as he had done
nothing illegal, but they escorted him away
from the scene to save him from the scores
of enraged homeless people who were
angry aL hlm for spendlng all Lhelr ume
walung ln llne yeL noL gemng Lhelr $40.
Worse yeL, wlLh Lhe man belng carLed o,
Lhe homeless had no way of gemng back

And all this was caused over the furor
created to get a new iPhone. We never
hear of anything like this happening
with Samsung phones. 1he korean rm

scene and interviewed people to determine
how Apple creates such a following. A
producer working with Samsung asked,
Other companies release new phones, but
theres not as much passion and heat ... Its
only Apple. Why? Were curious.
Samsung probably arent the ones
wondering this. There are probably
several Apple shareholders with the same
quesuon. Much of lL seems Lo come down
Lo lnnovauon and repuLauon. no mauer
how many umes Lech glanLs Samsung and
Apple meet each other in the courtroom
baullng over small paLenLs ulumaLely used

rsL wlLh Lhe lnnovauve lhone. Lveryone
else will always been an also-ran unless
they invent something that overtakes the
orlglnallLy of Lhe rsL lhone.
34
35
Powever, Apple has come under re from
lLs deLracLors for noL havlng any lnnovauon
le ln Lhem. Lveryone ls walung for LhaL nexL
big thing, and some believe with the death
of Steve Jobs two years ago that there wont
be another big thing to come from Apple.
We hear rumors of an iWatch and Apple
television set, but we havent seen either of
Lhem show up ln any Apple keynoLe.
The changes to the iPhone this year were
denlLely exclung, buL perhaps Lhey
weren'L exclung enough Lo change Lhose
stock prices. What needs to be pointed
out though as well is that one reason they
mlghL noL have been as exclung ls LhaL we
knew all about them even before the Apple
event announcing the iPhone 5c and iPhone
5s. We were excited for these phones but
were excited months ago.
36
Those tech fans showing up in Apple Stores
across the land arent showing up because
theyre incredibly excited to see what is
bing released. They know. So why are they
showing up? Theyre showing up because of
Apple's repuLauon.
These Apple release days have become
an event. Apple always makes sure to do
everything big, and these release days
follow suit. Its so much easier to sign on to
apple.com and order your phone and have
it delivered, but many people instead brace
for the crowds on the release day at their
nearest Apple Store.
And why do they do this? They do this
Lo be parL of lL all. 1hey don'L [usL have
an iPhone. They have an iPhone they
bought after camping out on the Apple
37
Store doorstep for a night or two. They
have a story to tell when someone sees
their phone and mentions, Oh, you have
an iPhone? Thats why these hoards
of people show up. Thats something
Samsung has never created. They dont
have Samsung stores to camp out in
front of, and they are available far too
many places.
Thats why Apple places limits on the
number of iPhones someone can purchase
in one shot. It gives more people a chance
to be able to have that experience.
However, with this businessman trying
to beat the system by using homeless
people to buy the phones for him, its
akln Lo uckeL scalpers buylng concerL and
sporung uckeLs ln mass amounLs Lo sell for

been transferred to many more enterprising
minds. Maybe even Samsung will pick up
on it. They could buy a bunch of iPhones,
use lL ln Lhelr adveruslng somehow, and
also aecL LhaL crazy supply and demand
slLuauon.
The glory days of Apple may or may not
be over. There are many more factors
going into it, though, than their ingenuity.

Since I am always up for a cruise and have

I was once served a bill for literally
thousands of dollars during a cruise that
56
took me and my husband between Tokyo
and Anchorage by way of the Bering Sea.
All my ship-to-shore phone calls and hours
in the ships computer lab sending and
receiving email in 2006 was behind this bill,
and I wised up. I learned what I could and
couldnt do to be able to cruise and not
break the bank in the process.
To be sure, budgets are part of nearly
everyone's llfesLyle buL parucularly so when
Laklng a vacauon. 1haL's one of Lhe reasons
cruising is so popular: You usually know what
youre going to spend before you even step

Many cruises are all-inclusive, while others
charge for items like alcoholic beverages,

Indirect ways are diverse, from using common

As for Lhe lauer, Lhls ls a greaL way Lo hook

1o nd Lhe mosL convenlenL lnLerneL cafe can
become a tough task, depending on the size
or posluon of Lhe porL.
If you dont have any idea where to start,
ask the concierge aboard the ship. He or

lower than bridge level crew members
who are typically charged even more than
guests onboard their ships are always eager
to get to the closest Internet cafe in order

Lhe people who work ln Lhls klnd of oaung

58
The same is true for making calls in a
telephone facility when your cellular service
ls elLher cosL prevenLauve or slmply doesn'L
oer avallablllLy from where you are sLauoned
at the moment of need.
ln 8uenos Alres before lnLernauonal

someone ln Lhe SLaLes cosL abouL ve
cents a minute. The price wasnt bad
slnce Lhe conversauon was shorL, and Lhe
conversauon was necessary slnce lL was
work-related and an emergency to boot.
I was glad that was the case because the
facility from which I was calling wasnt
a glamorous spot. It was smelly, and
the folks who ran the place only spoke
Spanish, a language for which I can call up
abouL y words aL besL - and some of
those are actually more Spanglish.

That said, it was back on the ship to discover
that if you have a really short message to
convey you may want to do so by calling or
emalllng raLher Lhan Lexung or Skype-lng or

Why is that?
If you can get the message across in less than

lf Lhere was [usL one feaLure of Lhe
recently announced iPhone 5s that gave
any observer reason to believe that Apple
hasn'L qulLe glven up Lhe lnnovauon ghosL
[usL yeL, lL was surely Lhe lncluslon of a
ngerprlnL scanner - 1ouch lu - LhaL was
no less enLhuslasucally welcomed ln so
many quarters for being so widely and
easily predicted. Touch ID, it is fair to say,
ls a feaLure oerlng plenLy of exclung
appllcauons for Lhe fuLure, lf Apple can aL
least get the security side of things right.
Cne suggesuon ln some quarLers was LhaL
Lhe new ngerprlnL sensor could be used Lo
add even more convenience to the digital
wallet, which has itself made paying for
goods and services that that much more
streamlined and hassle-free in recent years.
8uL rsL, leL's clarlfy whaL a dlglLal walleL ls.
WnA1 IS A DIGI1AL WALLL1?
Its important to recognize that the term
digital wallet is something of a catch-all
for various technologies - although the gist
of this increasingly widespread feature is
that it makes it easier for you to pay for
sLu uslng Lhe wonders of modern moblle
technology. When people talk of a digital
wallet these days - or e-wallet, to use
anoLher popular Lerm - Lhey're oen Lalklng
about a smartphone app.
The idea is that when you need to pay for
something, instead of whipping out your
old fashioned leather wallet with all of its
awkward and easily lost cards and cash,
you use Lhe encrypuon soware of a dlglLal
wallet to instantly pay for your goods with
what may be one simple step - like tapping
your phone Lo a compauble checkouL
reglsLer. AlLernauvely, you mlghL [usL need a
PIN or mobile phone number to make your
e-wallet work.
96
97
?our paymenL lnformauon ls already
stored in the app, so with that simple
trigger, paying for an item can be a breeze.
Customers like it because its more
convenient and stress-free than reaching
for a physical wallet, while merchants love
customers paying for their goods quicker,
as well as Lhe fraud proLecuon LhaL a dlglLal
walleL aords Lhem.
Everybodys a winner it would seem. So
how has the techno|ogy advanced so far,
whaL are lLs presenL llmlLauons and how
could it develop in the future?
THE STATE OF PLAY SO FAR
With the likes of coins and paper having
served as perfectly able currency for
thousands of years to date, theyre hardly
llkely Lo go away any ume soon. ?eL wlLh
checkbooks and cards having gained (if
youll excuse the pun) currency over the
years, it shows that we human beings are
always appreclauve of ever-greaLer uullLy
and portability.
As always seems to be the case, its not the
West, but Iapan and korea that have truly
embraced the digital wallet so far.
But thats not to suggest that we
havent already had a few digital wallet
apps making an impact in our corner
of the world. Of course, this being
AppleMagazine, we couldnt miss the
chance Lo menuon assbook, introduced
in iOS 6. The idea of this app is that by
scanning 2D barcodes, you can manage
movle, concerL and alrllne uckeLs and even
selected merchants loyalty cards and
coupons. When Lhe due daLe of your uckeL
nears, or youre close to a cafe where your
coupon can be used, you recelve a ume
and locauon-based noucauon.
98
assbook-supporung apps enable Lhe
addluon of passes, removlng Lhe need
for you to lug around those cumbersome
grocery coupons and loyalty cards, but
many other digital wallets have also been
developed in recent years for various
plauorms, wlLh Coogle WalleL perhaps
being the best known. A link is established
between the handset owners Google
accounL and Lhelr credlL card lnformauon,
meaning that the smartphone simply has to
be waved or Lapped on Lhe nlC machlne for
a payment to be made.
These two apps certainly have their
llmlLauons, wlLh Coogle WalleL, for
example, unul very recenLly belng
dependenL on Lhe avallablllLy of near lleld
Communlcauon (nlC) Lechnology on a
smartphone or tablet. That is by no means
guaranteed for your device, and it certainly
isnt the case for the iPhone or iPad.
Passbook, meanwhile, lacks Google Wallets
ability to facilitate in-store purchases with
a debit card or credit card, although theres
always Lhe opuon of vlewlng your bank
balance with BillGuard.
WnICn LWALLL1S AkL 1nL
CUkkLN1 'ALSC kANS?'
Other apps that really cant be ignored by
those looking for some of that e-wallet
funcuonallLy, speed and convenlence
through their mobile phone include Lemon
Wallet, which allows for the storage
and use of credlL and deblL lnformauon,
among others, turning it into a barcode
for merchants to scan. Windows Phone,
Android and iOS users can all presently
access this app. Square Wallet works in a
similar way, except that you are restricted
to a list of Squares own merchants.
99
100
We could go on and on, menuonlng Lhe
likes of Isis for Android smartphones
wlLh nlC, as well as Ceode by lCache, an
alLernauve opuon for Lhose lacklng nlC.
This app enables the storage of your credit
cards and loyalty cards with the provided
GeoCard, then temporarily serves as the
card LhaL you selecL. 1he card ls lcked,
swiping begins and the GeoCard will
remove all daLa once you've nlshed paylng
for goods, leaving you to choose new card
lnformauon for your nexL Lransacuon.
The more unusual apps out there that
come under the vague banner of mobile
e-wallet include the Venmo app - available
for iOS, Android and BlackBerry users. Once
Lhe reglsLrauon of a credlL card, deblL card
or bank account has been completed, it
allows you to transfer money to friends
and receive it in turn, almost as if you were
sending an email. Theres also Chirpify,
whlch harnesses soclal medla plauorms llke
lnsLagram and 1wluer for buylng, selllng
and the sending and receiving of money.
In short, there is no shortage of apps
making the most of mobile payments
technology so that people like yourself
can pay for goods and transfer money in a
falrly eorLless way. WhaL mlghL surprlse
many concerted Apple fans, however, is
that its old adversary, Goog|e, has beaten
|t to the punch ln provldlng an eecuve
digital wallet service for iOS - without the
aforemenuoned dependence on nlS.
WHATS THE APPEAL OF THE NEW
GOOGLE WALLET FOR iDLVICLS?
Yes, thats right. Google has managed
to get the venerable Goog|e Wa||et app
onto the |hone, iPad and iPod Touch. It
marks a movement away from the search
101
glanL dependlng on nlC for lLs servlces.
At around the same time as the apps
debut on iOS, it was updated for devices
running Android 2.3 or later, enabling
even handseLs wlLhouL nlC connecLlvlLy
to make the most of it.
As an Apple iDevice owner, you can use
the refashioned Goog|e Wa||et to not only
send your friends money via email, akin to
PayPal, but also store debit cards, credit
cards, loyalty programs and coupon-like
102
oers. lL cosLs noLhlng Lo make money
transfers through the improved app, with
money also able to be sent via Gmail.
Security is provided by a PIN, and theres
also urchase roLecuon" and consLanL
fraud monitoring.

1nL DIGI1AL WALLL1?
There are all manner of debates go|ng on
surrounding the future of the digital wallet
- including whether the mobile payments
marketplace will come to be dominated by
nlC or cloud-based soluuons.
Apple is clearly one of the admirers of the
lauer approach, havlng laLely app||ed for
a patent combining a digital wallet with
virtual currency, enabling money to be
stored in the cloud. This would allow you to
103
104
use your iPhone to make payments without
Lhe need for nlC. 8uL lnLrlgulngly, nlC does
geL a menuon ln Apple's paLenL appllcauon,
so we wouldnt rule out the possibility of
iPhone users one day being able to use the
long-shunned technology to communicate
with point-of-sale terminals.
1nL DISADVAN1AGLS CI DIGI1AL
WALLL1S CAN'1 8L IGNCkLD
The digital wallet as a concept has no
shortage of drawbacks, of course. People
ask quesuons abouL Lhe securlLy and
privacy of a digital wallet, and indeed
worries about the possible future
lncorporauon of 1ouch lu lnLo an e-walleL
soluuon won'L have been allayed by a
group of hackers c|a|m|ng to have a|ready
comprom|sed |t.
E-crime is certainly higher on the agenda
these days, and there will be a greater
focus ln Lhe years Lo come on prevenung
digital bad guys hacking into customers
accounts and running up their credit card
balances. The more complicated nature of
a dlglLal walleL Lransacuon - encompasslng
Lhe smarLphone hardware and operaung
sysLem, Lhe parucular paymenL app and
the payment source like a PayPal account
or bank - may harden percepuons LhaL
theres greater chance w|th an e-wa||et for
a damag|ng secur|ty |apse to occur.
1here have also been suggesuons LhaL
many cusLomers are sull strugg||ng to see
the benehts of us|ng mob||e wa||ets over
Lhe Lradluonal cash or deblL card - aer all,
any e-walleL soluuon suddenly looks less
convenient if you are constantly having to
swlLch nlC on and o for securlLy reasons,
or even have to stop to enter a PIN on
your smartphone. Indeed, theres a lack
105
of consensus about how much consumer
demand there even is for digital wallets.
noneLheless, we sull expecL Lhe e-walleL
to play an increasingly fundamental part in
moblle users' llves. Suggesuons for whaL
the future of the d|g|ta| wa||et could hold
have ranged from a greater role for data
analyucs and cusLomlzed coupons, Lo Lhe
launch of branded independent wallets by
banks. Which ones prove to be more than
merely pie in the sky very much remains to
be seen.

In this 3D computer-animated flm from
DreamWorks, an ordinary garden snail dares
to dream of becoming the fastest snail in the
world, but his friends are happy living life at
the standard snail pace, incredibly slow. He
has a chance to make his dream come true
after he earns a spot in the Indy 500. Ryan
Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pea, Snoop
Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Michelle Rodriguez, and
Samuel L. Jackson provide voices.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Director David Soren conceived the
idea for this flm in a DreamWorks pitch
competition, and pitched it as Fast &
Furious with snails.
2. Soren chose snails for the movie, as for
him, it was less about trying to make a
racing movie and more about fnding an
underdog that I could really latch onto.
3. DreamWorks partnered with the
parent company of the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway and Indy Racing
League, LLC, to make the racing in the
flm as authentic as possible.
4. Snoop Dogg not only voiced a
character, but also contributed an
original song, Let the Bass Go, to the
soundtrack.
5. DreamWorks will team up with Netfix
to produce a series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast
Action Stunt Team), based on the movie,
and it will debut in December.

Springsteen & I
When it comes to music, mention the Boss,
and everyone knows who youre talking
about. Hes also known just by his last name,
Springsteen. Hes been entertaining us
with hearty rock n roll for forty years and
has a battalion of fans to back him. This
documentary looks back on his long career
through the eyes of those adoring fans.
Only video and photos submitted by fans
were used in the making of the flm.
FIVE FACTS:
1. The documentary was inspired by the
flm Life in a Day.
2. Director Baillie Walsh watched every
video that was sent to him by fans, a total
of three-hundred hours of footage.
3. Some footage Walsh stayed away from.
There were stories about how generous he
is, stuf about 9/11, and he comes of a bit
god-like, and I didnt feel comfortable with
those stories.
4. What Walsh did include were stories that
led to an undercurrent that hes a very
decent man.
5. Walsh didnt come to the flm as a
Springsteen fan, but left it as one. I think
his career is astonishing.

Girl Most Likely
Kristen Wiig stars in this comedy as a failed
playwright who fakes suicide trying to win
back her ex, then winds up in her mothers
custody back home in New Jersey. Her
mother, a gambling addict, probably isnt
the best person to guide her daughter
through life. Yet if shes going to get
through all this, she has to learn to accept
all the oddities of her situation. Annett
Bening, Matt Dillon, Christopher Fitzgerald,
Natasha Lyonne, and Darren Criss co-star.
FIVE FACTS:
1. Wiig explains that it wasnt a
conscious thing that both of her
leading woman roles are sad sacks who
dont have their shit together.
2. The comedienne relates to her character
in two ways wanting a more glamorous life
even though it doesnt mean anything and
procrastinating with writing despite having
success.
3. Wiig actually received the script for
this flm before Bridesmaids and has
been working on it ever since.
4. The pressure Wiig has received to do a
Bridesmaids 2 (which she has turned down)
reminds her of the pressure her character in
Girl Most Likely is under to crank out some
success.
5. Wiig fans will get even more of her
in December when two comedies
Anchorman 2 and The Secret Life of Walter
Mitty are due out.

Based on the book Reclaiming History, The
Assassination of President John F. Kennedy by
Vincent Bugliosi, the flm is a look at the day
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated
from the perspective of those who witnessed
it frsthand. This includes the doctors and
nurses at the hospital, the Secret Service, a
cameraman, and Lee Harvey Oswalds brother.
James Badge Dale, Zac Efron, and Marcia
Gay Harden, Jackie Earle Haley, Colin Hanks,
Ron Livingston, Billy Bob Thornton, and Paul
Giamatti.
FIVE FACTS:
1. The flm is unlike others about the JFK
assassination in that it does not explore
the conspiracy theories surrounding the
event.
2. Screenwriter/director Peter Landesman
explains, No one [at the hospital] was
prepared for what was coming. They thought
the president had the fu.
3. Landesman was looking to explore the
disorientation, chaos, and anarchy and
what it was to survive that weekend.
4. For Billy Bob Thornton, the movie was so
real, including Paul Giamattis likeness to his
character, that hed forget he was making a
movie.
5. This movie is released with perfect timing,
as November marks the fftieth anniversary of
the assassination.

Prism
Katy Perry
For Perrys fourth studio album, she sought
a sound similar to Swedish dance music
artists like Robin. To create the sound, she
worked with a Swedish producer, as well
as previous collaborators and a few new
collaborators. She said in an interview from
late last year, I know exactly the record I
want to make next. I know the artwork,
the coloring and the tone ... I even know
what type of tour Im doing next. Ill be
pleased if the vision I have in my head
becomes a reality.
FIVE FACTS:
1. When Perry started working on the
album, she was coming of her divorce
from Russell Brand and thought the
album would be much darker, but now
wants it known she changed her mind.
2. The singer chose the album title because
she actually fnally let the light in and then I
was able to create all these songs, referring to
self-refection and working on herself.
3. The release of the album was announced
by a gold truck that traveled around the US
before stopping in NYC for the Video Music
Awards.
4. The frst single, Roar, is about being your
own bully. Its a song about [standing up]
and speaking up for yourself and having
the strength.
5. As to whether or not Prism will have the
same success as the Teenage Dream album,
Roar has given Perry her biggest digital song
sales of her career so far.

Brave Enough:
Live at the Variety
Playhouse
Sara Bareilles
This live album was recorded on May 20,
2013, at Bareilles concert at the Variety
Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Performing
solo had previously been a large fear of
hers, but with the urging of friends, she
went for it. It ended being one of my
favorite experiences of my whole life. I was
shocked and grateful and so proud of
that accomplishment..
FIVE FACTS:
1. Bareilles was recently a Guest DJ on iTunes.
2. One of the reasons Bareilles was hesitant to
perform was because I like being a part of
a family onstage and on the road.
3. She performs Elton Johns classic Goodbye
Yellow Brick Road on the album and in doing
so, the song sort of took on a new meaning
for me.
4. While she does admit to getting sick of
playing Love Song, she believes I would feel
remiss if I did a show where I didnt play Love
Song.
5. Of singing Brave live with Taylor Swift
recently, Bareilles says it was totally
fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

Better Together
Fifth Harmony
While through most of the competition it
seemed as if the group Fifth Harmony had
a great shot at winning the second season
of The X Factor, they actually came in third
place behind Tate Stevens and Carly Rose
Soneclar. Not that it would be the frst time
for a Simon Cowell/The X Factor-created
group to do well, as One Direction falls
into this category as well. This EP is Fifth
Harmonys frst release.
FIVE FACTS:
1. The group was signed to Syco Music and
Epic Records, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reids
two labels.
2. The EP is executive produced by Julian
Bunetta, a producer/songwriter behind One
Direction, Flo Rida, Natash BedingField, Leona
Lewis, and Boyz II Men.
3. So far the debut single, Miss Movin On,
hasnt done well, topping the charts at No. 76
of the US Billboard Hot 100.
4. The EP is doing better than the lead single,
hitting second place on the iTunes album
chart, only behind Katy Perrys Prism.
5. The frst time Fifth Harmony heard
Miss Movin On on the radio, they were all
together.

Prince
Weve gotten used to Prince doing odd
things. We can reference just the whole
name debacle for indication of that. First he
changed his name to a symbol, then when
that became too confusing, he became
known as The Artist Formerly Known as
Prince, which was then shortened to The
Artist before he just went back to Prince.
This month brings a new EP that features
the same song done fve diferent ways.
Only Prince could get away with it.
FIVE FACTS:
1. The cover art for the EP is actually ripped
from Dave Chappelle doing his impression of
Prince.
2. Prince has had ten albums go platinum
and thirty Top 40 singles throughout his long
career.
3. Hes not just The Artist, but also the guy
who started the careers of Sheila E, Carmen
Electra, the Time, and Vanity 6.
4. Although he has switched his name a few
times, his given name really is Prince, or Prince
Rogers Nelson to be exact, named after his
dad, but he was nicknamed Skipper then.
5. Believe it or not, this little guy actually
played basketball in high school.

Whenever you sit at the bar in this place

she will. If you dont ask, shell play something

So, as things have changed in history for

Instagram turned 3 years old over the weekend,
buL Lhe young soclal neLwork sull has some

lnsLagram surpassed 130-mllllon acuve monLhly
users, and it announced last week that it will
begin displaying photo and video ads.
8uL Lhere's sull room for lmprovemenL. So Lo
celebrate Instagrams 3rd birthday, here are three
things we want to see.
1. C||ckab|e ||nks
Instagram is an excellent place to share visual
content with friends. Its not so great if you
need to share a link. Currently, when users post
a picture or a video and include a URL in their
capuon, oLher users cannoL slmply Lap on Lhe llnk
and be taken to the appropriate website. Instead,
they have to manually type it if they want to get
anywhere.
1haL's preuy annoylng, and from a users'
point of view, theres no obvious reason for it. I
personally get frustrated with the lack of clickable
links because I post pictures of new gadgets Im
reviewing but I cant include links to my reviews.
So come on, Instagram. Stop being like that, and
give us our clickable links.
2. ke-grams
Cn 1wluer, you can reLweeL oLhers. Cn lacebook,
you can share what your friends have posted. But
THREE THINGS WE WANT FROM
INSTAGRAM ON ITS 3RD BIRTHDAY
164
on Instagram, theres no way to re-gram or re-
share what others have posted.
Instead, users have taken to using apps like
Repost for Instagram, or they will simply shoot
screen shots of their friends content and re-
upload it.
The demand for this feature is there, and its
happening whether Instagram likes it or not. So
Instagram might as well integrate the feature
and help all of us get more likes on our photos
and vldeos by lemng our followers re-gram our
content.
3. Improved s|o-mo v|deo |ntegranon
Instagram hasnt made much headway in the
world of shorL vldeo cllps. 1wluer-owned vlne ls
sull klng.
But if theres one thing the mobile social network
has going for it here is that users can upload video
they shoot outside the Instagram app into it later
-- a feature Vine doesnt yet support. Thats made
Instagram popular with users whove bought the
new lhone 3s, Lhanks Lo lLs slow-mouon vldeo-
shooung capablllues.
The problem is that if users want to share slow-
mouon fooLage Lhey shooL wlLh Lhelr shlny Apple
devlce, Lhey rsL have Lo emall Lhe vldeo Lo
themselves and re-save it onto their iPhone 5s so
that the footage can be compressed. The whole
process ls welrd, and many users probably sull
haven'L gured ouL how Lo do Lhls.
lnsLagram should make sharlng slow-mouon
vldeo easler. Cne way would be by lemng users
shoot slo-mo from within its app.
Ponorable menuon: lmprovlng Web presence
Instagram has slowly been building out a Website
for its social network. Right now users can check
ouL Lhelr plcLures and see oLhers' proles. 1hey
can also see their feed, which is where they see
videos and photos posted by those they follow.
Theres nothing wrong with Instagrams website,
but theres also not much happening there either.
1he soclal neLwork should nd a way Lo make
users visit Instagram.com more oen, especlally
if they ever hope to sells ads on that real estate.

his thoughts and ideas would be a thing

being reminded of the co-creator of the
Cuperuno-based company. lL's almosL llke

ancreauc cancer may have Laken !obs' llfe,
but it certainly did nothing to diminish his
spirit, a spirit that seems very much alive.
Through every product announcement, its
as lf he ls sull Lhere lnLroduclng one more
thing. When we use the mobile devices he
introduced, were not thinking of Tim Cook;
were thinking of Steve Jobs. Apple is and
was his company, even in death.
!obs was [usL responslble for so much. Pls
story is legendary. It was indisputably Steve
Woz Wozniak who invented the Apple
I Computer. Jobs had nothing to do with
that. It was shown in the movie Jobs, with
AshLon kuLcher playlng Lhe uLle role, LhaL
even before Apple came to be, Jobs was
going to Woz for help, asking him in one
slLuauon for help creaung a game. 8uL lL
was Jobs who was the business visionary.
He exploited his friend promising to pay
him half for the game, but really only paid
hlm a fracuon of whaL he was belng pald.
Computer inventory he was not; business
visionary he was.
1haL relauonshlp sLayed Lhe same as

Woz had never even intended to market

insistence of Jobs.

Pixar was later sold to Disney, making Jobs

Jobs took this thing full circle. He made a

on the iPod? With iTunes, of course, an
app for your computer that allows you
to buy songs, store songs, move songs,
etc. There is no other way to look at this
Lhan recognlzlng Lhau1unes and lods are
responsible for changing the music industry.
And who was at the helm of that? Steve
Jobs.
1he nexL lnnovauon !obs was responslble
for is the iPhone. There were other mobile
phones to come before the iPhone, but
none of them were quite like this one. It
combined not only a mobile phone, but
also Lhe lod, a mulu-Louch dlsplay, a web
browser, and a few small uullues. LvenLually
the iPhone was opened up to third-party
apps, again changing the face of the mobile
phone industry. It was now a smartphone,
allowing you to do almost anything
computer-related on the phone you carry
173
in your pocket, as theres an app for that,
meaning there is an app created for nearly
anything you want to do on the iPhone.
It could be hard to do all those things on
your iPhone though. Not that the device is
dlmculL Lo use, buL lL's so small. So !obs and
Apple invented the iPad. Its basically the
same Lhlng as an lhone, [usL blgger. ?eL, lL's
sull nearly as porLable as an lhone. 1hls
tablet was again a device that changed how
we lived, and we owe it to Jobs. And for the
people who think an iPad is too big while
and iPhone is too small? Theres now an
iPad Mini.
Aer LhaL lasL lnnovauon, Lhough, !obs
passed away. Pe le behlnd a legacy of
computers, services, and devices that are
not only designed to change our lives, they
did! But he had to have the right people in
place to carry on the Apple legacy. Publicly
he is relying on the new CEO Tim Cook,
handplcked by hlmself Lo [oln Apple. Pe
once sa|d about the bus|ness, You kind of
want to manage it like youre in the dairy
business. If it gets past its freshness date,
you have a problem. However, while Cook
is a great businessman, he is no innovator.
Consequently, Apple is now being called
ouL for noL havlng any new lnnovauon.
The small changes they have done to the
Macintosh, MacBook Air, iPhone, iPad, and
lod llnes aren'L belng seen as lnnovauve.
The public wants new. They want all new

wonder if this was something Jobs put in
place before his demise to be sure that he
had slmllar lnnovaLors aL Lhe helm - [usL
like he made sure he had similar business-
minded individuals with Cook.
Because of the business being managed by
Cook and lve, we can be sure !obs ls sull
very much a part of the company. As long as
these two are in place, so is Jobs, the man
who handpicked them to be there. And
as long as we're sull uslng all Lhose same

What? Already? The holidays are almost

One spring a couple of years ago I was about

The problem was that while I love seminal

If consumer electronics companies are
to be believed, someone on your holiday
shopplng llsL ls [usL dylng for a wrlsLwaLch
that displays message alerts and weather
updates.
Samsung and Sony have devices out for
the holidays. Qualcomm has one coming.
Apple is believed to be making one, and
a new report says Google is developing
one, too.
Why the big push for computerized
watches? Its not coming from consumers,
says Jonathan Gaw, a research manager
at IDC. Rather, its a product in search of a
market _and an expensive one at that.
Weve had smartwatches for a while, and
while the capabilities and technology have
gotten better, this is still not something
that people are clamoring for, Gaw says.
The idea that it would ramp up for the
holidays was always kind of a stretch.
That hasnt stopped gadget makers from
trying. Companies are under pressure
to create a new source of buzz now that
consumers are no longer wowed by the
latest smartphones and tablet computers.
Many people already have those devices,
and the new ones out this year are
evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
Gaw says many gadget makers see an
opporLunlLy Lo [ump ln wlLh a smarLwaLch,
before a behemoth like Apple is able get
its rumored iWatch ready.
Last month, Samsung Electronics Co.
sLarLed selllng Lhe $300 Calaxy Cear ln
the U.S. It works with selected Samsung
smartphones to display email and text
alerts. Theres a camera on the strap for
low-resolution photos and a speakerphone
on the watch to make calls while leaving
your phone in the pocket. You can install
apps for additional functionality, such
as tracking fitness activities and playing
games, though there are only a handful of
apps available for now.
Sony Corp.s SmartWatch 2 is cheaper, at
$200. unllke Lhe Cear, lL works wlLh a varleLy

through the wristwatch. You can answer calls
using the watch, but you need a Bluetooth
wireless headset linked to the phone if you
dont want to hold it to your ear.
Qualcomm Inc., meanwhile, plans to start
selling Toq before the holidays. It, too, will
work with several Android devices.
Another smartwatch getting attention is
the Pebble, which comes from a startup
LhaL ralsed more Lhan $10 mllllon Lhrough

Apple isnt likely to release its iWatch
before next year, given that no mention
was made of it at the companys product
showcase last week.
As for Google, The Wall Street Journal cited
unnamed people famlllar wlLh Lhe mauer on
1uesday ln reporung LhaL Lhe lnLerneL search
company is in late-stage development on a

234
Samsung and Sony executives say theyve
designed their watches to give people
ready access to information they would
normally check on their phones, reducing
the need to constantly pull out the phones.
Only Qualcomm seems to be
acknowledging that theres no real
consumer demand for smartwatches yet.
The company says its trying to showcase
whats possible, so other manufacturers
will take the concept and build better
products _ using Qualcomms display
technology and other components.
In a September briefing with The
Associated Press, Samsung executives
said the company has a history of taking
risks. The company notes that people
were skeptical about its Note phones with
big screens, too, but now several other
manufacturers are making Android phones
with bigger and bigger screens.

There are so many more reasons Apple

auracLed crlucal acclalm on Lradluonal
