Major: Biophysics; GPA: 3.17
Relevant Coursework: Graphical Modeling, Algorithms for Biological Problems (Private Reading),
Linear Algebra, Dynamical Systems (Audit), Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology
PUBLICATION
S. M. Burrows, C. L. Martin, and E. A. Roberts (2007), High-Latitude Remote Sensing of Mesospheric Wind
Speeds and Carbon Monoxide. Journal of Geophysical Research. 112, D17109
RESEARCH
OBERLIN COLLEGE Oberlin, Ohio
Research Project, Department of Mathematics, Paul Cao, PhD.
Modified Fuzzy Causal Mapping (F-CMAP) models in MATLAB. Implemented a Gaussian membership
function for linguistic variables, and optimized the function's width for system oscillation. Evaluated the
transfer of a differential equations model of cellular division to F-CMAP. (Winter – Spring 2008)
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI Cincinnati, Ohio
Research Education for Undergraduates, Department of Biomedical Engineering, David Butler, Ph.D.
Studied the effect of stretching collagen sponges seeded with fibroblasts on efficacy of tissue regeneration.
Studied synthesis pathways of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and performed experiments to compare
high MMP levels vs. cellular contraction as possible mechanisms for sponge breaking. (Summer 2007)
OBERLIN COLLEGE Oberlin, Ohio
Summer Undergraduate Research, Ongoing Research, Physics Department, Chris Martin, Ph.D.
Developed MATLAB code to find carbon monoxide distribution as function of altitude from radio telescope
spectral data. Imported spectral ASCII data into MATLAB and modified a genetic algorithm within MATLAB
and FORTAN to find amount of carbon monoxide from observed spectra near carbon monoxide ground state
emission wavelength. The best fit theoretical curve was composed of altitude component spectra so as to to
find the best carbon monoxide amount at discrete mesospheric altitude levels. (Summer 2006 – Winter 2007)
UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY Logan, Utah
Summer Undergraduate Research/Laboratory Intern, National Center for the Design of Molecular
Function, Linda S. Powers, Ph.D. Developed a method to purify hemalbumin and performed peroxide and
catalase assays to study the peroxidase effect of binding various pharmaceutical drugs to hemalbumin. The
previous summer performed IR spectroscopy, and shadowed a microbiologist. (Summer 2005 and 2004)
LEADERSHIP
Placerita Canyon Nature Center Volunteer Docent Naturalist, Completed a 9-week, 50+ hour training
course on Placerita Canyon natural history. Led interpretive hikes to school groups. (Spring 2009)
WORK EXPERIENCE
SELF EMPLOYED Los Angeles, California
Private Math and Chemistry Tutor, Tutored pre-calculus, algebra, and pre-algebra, high school chemistry,
and nursing school introductory chemistry. (Fall 2008 – Spring 2009)
ARITHMETIC SOLUTIONS Los Angeles, California
No Child Left Behind Tutor and Private Tutor, Derrick Louis.
Planned and instructed lessons on fundamental mathematics. Tutored algebra II. (Fall 2008 – Spring 2009)
