9th Annual International Chamber Music Composition Competition

Score Submission Deadline: February 3, 2014 Winning Submission Receives a $1000 Commission for a New Work
Areon Flutes, a professional flute chamber music ensemble, provides audiences with a fresh new outlook on traditional chamber music. Noted for innovative programming and collaborations, Areon has established itself in the USA as a premier chamber music ensemble. The group's performances are notable for creatively engaging its audiences with unique staging, theatrics, choreography, and using all members of the flute family. Part of Areon's mission is to make flute chamber music an equal voice in the chamber music world by leaving a new, diversified chamber music legacy. This competition is designed to add outstanding new repertoire to the flute chamber music world.

Brief Competition Description


Areon Flutes will be accepting score submissions for its 9th Annual Composition Competition. Any solo or chamber piece which includes a flute will be accepted. These scores will be judged and the winning composer will receive a commission by Areon Flutes for a new flute trio piece and a prize of $1000. This new commission will be premiered by Areon Flutes during their 2014-2015 concert season. The winning composer will also have the opportunity to have this new work distributed by the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Co.

Score Submission and Application Information:


Composers can submit any of the following pieces: Unaccompanied Solo Flute Work, Accompanied Solo Flute Work, OR Chamber Work of 2-6 players. No Orchestral or Large Ensemble works are allowed. Any member of the flute family is accepted as a flute (C flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute or Piccolo). Works including electronics are accepted. Each composer may enter up to two works, with at least one involving a flute. The duration of the work and the year of composition should be written on the score. A Live or MIDI recording of the piece is required. The recording must be in an MP3 format. All scores must be submitted in a PDF format. All applications, scores and recordings must be submitted online at http://areonflutes.com/education/international-chambermusic-competition. Both published and unpublished works will be accepted. The composer's real name must NOT appear on the score or recording. It should be replaced by a pseudonym that must also be given on the application. The jury will not see the applicants true identity until after the winner has been selected. If real names are included on the score or recording, the entry will be disqualified. The nonrefundable application fee is $25 per composer. Composers are allowed to submit up to two compositions for this fee. One application form can be used for both pieces. All fees must be paid via paypal at http://areonflutes.com/education/international-chamber-music-competition. All applications and materials must be submitted online by midnight on February 3, 2014.

Contest Regulations:
The competition is open to composers of all ages and nationalities. All judges decisions are final and the judges have the option not to select a winner. Prizes may be withheld or reduced where adequate standards are not met. If insufficient entries are received then the competition will not proceed and entry fees will be refunded. The winning composer will be notified via email by April 21, 2014 and posted on areonflutes.com. The composer of the first place winning composition will receive a commission by Areon Flutes for a new flute trio piece and a prize of $1000. In addition, Areon Flues will premiere the new commission during their 2014-2015 season. The winning composer will also have the opportunity to distribute this new commission through the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Co. Outstanding works may also be presented on future Areon Flutes concerts. The winning commission will be for a work of at least 12 minutes and can include C flute, Piccolo, Alto Flute and/or Bass Flute. The commission process will include collaboration with Areon Flutes over several months. The first draft of the piece must be ready by September 1, 2014. Winning scores and parts, either manuscripts or if later published, must then carry the statement: Commissioned and Premiered by Areon Flutes.
