CHAPLAIN'S CORNER: Our Post and Auxiliary lost a dear friend on

January 16, 2014, when Nellie Lowe passed away unexpectedly. She had worked with us on Monday Night Dinners for the last ten years. She was a great golfer and loyal friend. Our deepest sympathy to all. We have just heard that Life member, Karen Smith has passed way on Sunday, January 26, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. To her family goes our very deepest sympathy. Beverly Carsons husband is steadily improving after suffering his second stroke. Edi Clonce is still under doctors care and we are hoping for a complete recovery. She is busy getting everything ready for the up-coming Crab Feed on March 1, 2014. Tickets are available at the Post, $45.00 each. Edi puts on a wonderful dinner and raffle.

Mar. 1st - - (Sat.) Crab Feed - $45.00 6:00 pm Dinner 7:00pm.

The Post has changed our weekday hours. We will now be open Mon to Fri 3 P.M. to 9 P.M, Sat 12 P.M. to 10 P.M., and Sun 12 P.M. to 7 P.M. Also we have changed our canteen prices. The changes mostly affect the non-member party prices, with a few exceptions. The non-member prices were basically raised $0.50 across the board. The only things that will change for members is a $0.50 increase on Domestic and premium beers, well drinks, top shelf margaritas, and ($0.25) for white Russians. All other drinks will be the same price. Unfortunately it's the only way to keep up with the rising costs of the alcohol. But if you ask me, $3 domestics and $3.75 premium beers are still the best deal in town. Looking at our budget half way through the year, there is some good news and some bad news. Good news is Irene has done a good job keeping costs down and the canteen side of the house looks decent so far. The canteen is at 46% of its budgeted costs for goods, exactly on point at 50% for overhead, and another exact 50% of projected profit from the canteen. However the bad news is the Post side is struggling. We do depend on support of our members, and I really thank those of you who send in what you can, it really helps! We are only at 28% of our projected contributions and support. Hall rentals are not too bad at 41%, but we are at 166% of what we planned to spend on building repairs and maintenance. I will be suggesting a freeze on any and all building repair plans until next fiscal year. I hear there are some cool things in the works for fund raisers and hopefully that will help out in the future!

Veterans and Family Support: Our ladies were happy to hear that our lunches for
the Wounded Warrior Program at McClellan will continue, at least until October. We thank the M.O.L and our Post for financing the project. The Bunco group, that Ellen Reason and Kathy Linares belong, donated money to our Veterans Program which will be used for the desserts they serve to the Patients at Mather Hospital. The VFW thanks this group for their generosity. We would like to take this opportunity to Thank All the members that has and are donating to the Crab Feed Raffle. AWESOME!
Thanks very much, Jean Jones

Do you have VA Health Insurance? This can be confusing since VA health care is NOT considered a health insurance plan. The VA has health care services that are paid through co-pays, service connection eligibility, through a combination of VA covered costs and your private insurance if non-service connected. When considering keeping or canceling your private health insurance, keep in mind that service connected conditions are covered by the VA but non-service connected conditions are billed to your private insurance. VA is required to bill private health insurance providers for medical care, supplies and prescriptions provided for treatment of Veterans non service-connected conditions. Generally, VA cannot bill Medicare, but can bill Medicare supplemental health insurance for covered services. All Veterans applying for VA medical care are required to provide information on their health insurance coverage, including coverage provided under policies of their spouses. Veterans are not responsible for paying any remaining balance of VAs insurance claim not paid or covered by their health insurance, and any payment received by VA may be used to offset "dollar for dollar" a Veterans VA copay responsibility. A list of co-pays is at www.va.gov/health/ and eligibility factors for Veterans not required to make copays. Additional information about eligibility for VA health care services and what the VA pays is at www.va.gov/health/. Information extracted from the VA website at www.va.gov/health/ Renee' T. ALWAYS TO REMEMBER And FLY OUR FLAG

In this last month I had no new V.A. paperwork or claims to be submitted. However, we had a couple of interesting cases come before us. One; a member of this post, asked if I would call the spouse of his dear friend and inform him of some of the benefits he may be due. "F**k-You, never talk to me again", was all of the response we needed. V.F.W. rules for Service Officers forbid recruiting claims (I just asked if he may want to come down and see us). Three days ago a young lady (my age), came up to ask if I may help her in her quest to have her fathers record show he had won the Purple Heart. She stated he had been wounded escaping out of a bomber over German air-space in WWII. She had proof he had been a POW for two years. Yes, any sort of injury like this should qualify in this case. I told her I would love to look in-to his case. After some time on-line, and a couple of phone calls, I found that her father had never in his lifetime filed claim for his injury. I had to call her back and tell her that the DOD needed more proof that her fathers' injury was a "war related" one. I hold this matter as an open case (more proof may be found). Once again I have exceeded my bounds as a VFW Post Service Officer. Sorry, fire me.. John Cox, Service Officer
