Kriya Yoga and Inner Life

This article is offered as a humble dedication to Gurudev Paramahamsa Satyananda Saraswati, whos whole life has been dedicated to the evolution of consciousness and for the upliftment of humanity worldwide.

I first heard about Kriya Yoga in 1 !" after I had the good fortune of meeting a sannyasin disciple of #aramahamsa $atyananda $araswati. It was a meeting which made an inner connection to my inner being, and I consider the auspicious meeting with this $annyasin disciple of #aramahamsa $atyananda as a real milestone in my spiritual %ourney. You might have heard it mentioned in some of the classical te&ts that at the proper time the guru appears to the disciple, and in this instance the disciple of the Guru made the connection with me. #rior to that day I had done lots of intensive preparation with my previous yoga teacher in the yoga basics which mainly were classical hatha yoga asansas. 'lthough it was %ust asana training initially, I e&plored it to my fullest ability for three years putting in at least ( hours per day seven days per wee). It turned out to be a good preparation for the in*depth $adhanas which followed the meeting of the $wami, which was li)e throwing petrol on a fire %ust waiting for fuel. 't my first Yoga class with the $wami I purchased a boo) which she had which was the teachings of $wami $atyananda +olume 1. In that boo) there was a lot of in*depth clarification of what Yoga was really about, and I was especially drawn to the $atsangs about Kriya Yoga which at that time in the $atyananda Yoga 'shrams around the world was ,the ma%or $adhana- which was being propagated. v The importance of the Tantric Kriya Yoga $adhana in the $atyananda Yoga . /ihar Yoga system is further validated in the following important $atsang 0$piritual transmission of truth1 which was transmitted by my good friend, and Gurubhai Swami Anandakapila Saraswati in 1 22. Kriya Yoga and the Chakras http3..satyamyoga.com.4ha)ras5(6$atsang5(6with5(6$wami 5(6'nanda)apila5(6$araswati.htm v This $atsang also appears in the official archives of the /ihar $chool of Yogas publication Y7G' 8'G'9I:;, which has been in circulation since 1 <=. http://www.yogamag.net/archives/1977/ajan77/chak77.shtml

I started practicing the Kriya Yoga $adhana at home straight away, through studying the Kriyas as enumerated in the Kundalini Tantra te&t of $wami $atyananda 0which was released to the world in 1 !"1 and learning the practices one after the other. There was no point waiting for the teacher to appear on the doorstep, but soon in 1 !> a wee) long Kriya Yoga course was offered at the $atyananda Yoga 'shram at 8angrove 8ountain which I gladly attended. 'part from meeting about fifty other very )een Kriya Yoga students it was a time to tune into myself and my teacher, who turned out to be ?r $wami :adamurti $araswati an e&perienced disciple of $wami $atyananda and a very articulate and compassionate teacher of Kriya Yoga. Throughout the course, whilst learning the Kundalini Kriyas of Tantric Kriya Yoga I could feel a strong awareness in '%na 4ha)ra which left me with a %oyful blissed out feeling 0an e&treme natural high1 for the wee) long introduction to Kriya Yoga. It was a different )ind of high than that of a drug, as I was clearly understanding the instructions, and felt a greater clarity beginning to emerge from my mind. $ince this wee) long course I must have fallen in complete love with Kriya Yoga, because it has been my staff, my best friend and companion throughout my love affair with the goddess within. Kriya Yoga has uncovered throughout the last (= years of my life 0although only momentarily1 moments of transcendence into inner e&periences, intense moments of bliss, devotion and e&treme tran@uility. 'fter having some pretty deep e&periences in 1 !< 0e&plained in more detail here http://satyamyoga.com/Inner !"#$periences.htm 1 as a result of the process of an inner awa)ening, I met my Guru $wami $atyananda in India in 1 !!. $wami%i gave me an important personal instruction which was ,Mounamurti you can, if you wish continue with Kriya Yoga, as it is better than not practicing any Yoga Sadhana at all, but the most important thing for you is to be innocent. :ow twenty years have passed since that instruction, and I can say that the most important ingredient in Kriya Yoga is having a Guru who can impart the inner connection and inner e&periences. I also feel that the most important attribute for a Kriya Yoga teacher is to have that ability to drop the ego, be innocent and tune in to their guru who is the immortal light within. In this Kriya Yoga tradition, our Guru Swami Satyananda Saraswati 0who has established an unsha)able connection with the divine 8aha Kundalini1 is the transmitter. It is the disciples duty as a Kriya Yoga teacher to try to be an efficient channel.conductor so that their Kriya Yoga students or $adha)s, can connect with the gurus current which is the divine force of the cosmos. This Tantric Kriya Yoga system that was released fully to the world by $wami

$atyananda $araswati is partly described in the ancient spiritual Tantric Te&t, the %aha &irvana 'antra. $wami%i says that there are si& Kriyas mentioned in an indirect way 0as was to custom1 in this classical ancient Tantric te&t. The remaining Kriyas he was initiated into 0transmitted1 by $wami $ivananda $araswati, at the time when he was leaving $ivananda 'shram. It is mysterious how it wor)s, but without being connected to a guru in the traditional way, you will only meet with disappointment, frustration or problems of many dimensions. The Kriya Yoga $adhana that $wami $atyananda has been propagating since 1 <= is an ancient Tantric $adhana which has been tested for millennia by the masters of reality, the great Kriya Yoga $iddhas, Aishis, 8unis, $annyasins, $adhus, Bouseholders. It is a practice that progressive opens you up to an inner world. :ot only can psychic and.or spiritual development and awa)ening be an outcome, but Kriya Yoga can awa)en dormant creativity, mental clarity and health as positive side effects to this great $adhana. Individual Components of the Sadhana Tantric Kriya Yoga is an advanced $adhana, which magically combines classical 'sanas, #ranayamas, 8udras, /andhas, rotation of consciousness in the psychic pathways of Arohan & Awarohan, Mantras, Chakra awareness and Visualisations. In every Kriya Yoga tradition the core practice is development in Pranayama, which is an integral practice in most of the Kriyas. Through devotion to pranayama practice, the sensitivity is increased to both the inner and outer dimensions which we are a part of. It is an e&tremely practical, though subtle Tantric $adhana and technology designed to deepen our e&perience of the 4ha)ras, $ushumna C Kundalini. Kriya Yoga has an infinite degree of potential, the potential which is within us to e&plore our hidden birthright the light within. Dith regular practice over a period of time, Kriya Yoga brings us face to face with a cascade of energy and light which resides within. Dith Kriya Yoga your awareness.mind can e&pand inwardly and outwardly through the liberation of energy. This is Tantra E ;&pansion of mind and liberation of energy. ,The individual $oul is li)e a microchip that is implanted by G7?, it is a point of light that wraps around itselfMounamurti

S ien e In 1 ! I started to teach $atyananda Yoga fulltime, and during this year I decided that I needed to learn more about the body and mind, in order to become a better yoga teacher. I had become deeply inspired and impressed with the )nowledge, wisdom and deep esoteric mysticism of one of my 'ustralian Gurubhais (r )onn %*m+ord ,Swami Anandakapila Saraswati- , so much so, that in 1 I began a two year 0fulltime 1 C (6661 ?iploma of Bealth $cience C 8assage Therapy course to deepen my )nowledge of human anatomy and physiology. $wami 'nanda)apila had originally trained in #sychology and 4hiropractic, and had been a practicing 7steopathic physician for many years. This combination of studying mind and body interested me very much, and through my ?iploma I earned a tic)et into Fniversity, so that I could follow these studies. In (661 0after completing my ?iploma course1, I completed a year at Dollongong Fniversity studying #sychology C ;&ercise $cience, and the following year (66( I switched to 7steopathy at another Fniversity which I eventually had to leave after only one semester due to increasing yoga teaching commitments. 'lthough I did not complete my degree, the time at Fniversity was a fantastic time to investigate what I was deeply interested in, the human body and mind. It also allowed me access to the anatomy cadaver labs 0F7D mainly1, where I studied the human spinal cord with great enthusiasm. Throughout this intensive period of practical and academic study which was happening alongside with my Yoga $adhana, I discovered a relationship between the psychic passages of 'rohan C 'warohan which we use in Tantric Kriya Yoga, and the ?ermatomes 0see the diagram below1. !ermatomes The picture below shows the segmented dermatome distribution of spinal nerves to the front and bac) of the body.

Arohan & Awarohan There is a connection between the 'rohan and 'warohan psychic passageways in Tantric Kriya Yoga, and the 4onception vessel 04+1 and Governor vessel 0G+1 of traditional 4hinese 8edicine, and the segmented dermatomes 0distribution of spinal nerves to the front and bac) of the body1. In the /ihar $chool of Yoga publication Moola Bandha the Master "ey 01 2!, #age 1((1 by 4hela /uddhananda, there are correlations drawn between the 'rohan 0frontal . anterior1 psychic passageway and the 4onception vessel C the 'warohan 0bac).posterior1 psychic passageway and the Governor vessel

4hela /uddhananda states, that the ancient 4hinese must have )nown about Kriya Yoga, because in one of the ancient 4hinese scriptures called the ,#ai hin $ua #%ang hih 0The $ecret of the Golden Glower1 there is as meditation techni@ue very similar to that used in the Tantric Kriya Yoga. The 'ncient Taoists also used a Kriya meditation techni@ue , circulation of the light in the microcosmic orbit- seen here http://www.tiantianqigong.com/energetic.html # and also in this file 0found on http://www.scri.d.com 1 seen here you will see that the 'aoists *se the microcosmic or.it 0page 11< diagram (=1 to circulate the light, and sublimate se&ual energy into higher spiritual energy. Yogi ?r Biroshi 8otoyama in Theories of the 4ha)ras ,/ridge to Bigher 4onsciousness- also says that there is a Taoist meditation practice )nown as ,$hoshuten- 0the circulation of light1 which uliliHes the governor vessel meridian or $ushumna. ?r 8otoyama also states that in the conception vessel flows YI: energy C in the governor vessel flow Y':G energy. ?r 8otoyama also correlates the conception vessel meridian to the 'lambusa :adi, which is one of the ten ma%or nadis recogniHed in the Yogic system. De can now safely say that the 'rohan path which is used in the Tantric Kriya Yoga which has been propagated by #aramahamsa $atyananda $araswati utiliHes and activates the 'lambusa :adi or the 4onception +essel 8eridian. T48 0Traditional 4hinese 8edicine E 'cupuncture1 says that the 4+ is a store house of YI: energy C that the G+ is a storehouse for Y':G energy. If there is a balance of energy in these circuits which are full of the consciousness and mystical cha)ras, then we discover the T'7, KF:?'II:I, TB; 8I??I; #'TB. Therefore we tread the mystical and scientific middle path

of the Tao and Kundalini by practicing Kriya Yoga, an ancient and divine $adhana which has been practiced by sincere Yogis for aeons of time. There is also further historical evidence of a lin) between the ancient Kriya Yoga tradition of India and the teachings of the $iddhas in 4hina, through the ancient teachings of Siddha $ogarnathars poem /ogar Inana $agarama. In Tantric Kriya Yoga you slowly move your awareness and consciousness through the 'rohan and 'warohan passageway. You can imagine trying to move 0and feel1 your awareness along the surface of the s)in 0or slightly below1 through the frontal passageway. You can easily picture this using the diagram above, and thin) of your awareness rising through each of the dermatomes. Dhen you do this with ma&imum awareness, the tactile sensory nerve receptors pic) up your awareness, and the impulse is immediately sent bac) to the spinal cord. The same applies to the posterior psychic passageway. Sound $ody Bere is another analogy which will help here, if you have not practiced Kriya Yoga before. 's the human body.mind comple& is essentially a composite 0composition1 of sound C light vibrations that ,appears- li)e a solid piece of matter, you can easily effect this matter by utiliHing sound as a basis of your $adhana. This is where the ancient $eers of Yoga developed the science of 8antra C :ada Yoga, to help us uncover the mysteries of the soul. They ,perceived- the essence of matter through their direct perception. Imagine strumming a guitar or violinJ when a string is strummed or pluc)ed it effects the ne&t string, and the ne&t one etc, but to a slightly lesser degree of vibration. It sets in motion the sound vibration, and the sound can be felt 0and heard1 by this human organism. It has an immediate effect on the human organism because we 0and all matter1 are made up of sound vibrations. Dhen you run or circulate your breath through the $ushumna :adi 0or the arohan C awarohan circuit1 you are recruiting the dormant prana .chi .)i into activation, by your will. De want it to move towards the cha)ras and the sushumna nadi. Dhen I was born my parents lived with my grandparents for a couple of years, and I was deeply effected by my grandfathers playing of his +iolin. /efore the $econd Dorld Dar my grandfather was the second string +iolinist with the $ydney $ymphony 7rchestra. I grew up 0from %ust a toddler until my grandfathers death when I was 1<1 listening to my grandfather fantastic violin playing. I can remember him very well pulling out his +iolin every $aturday night and entertaining us grand children who were spellbound by his fantastic violin playing. To me he was li)e the Kimi Bendri& 0The Iead Guitar Iegend1 of +iolin, and I was transported during the time listening to him to another realm. This can be the effect of music and sound. In the right hands music can transform us by either listening to a good piece of music or playing it, either way the sound waves can elevate the mind.body.soul. 8antra 0sound vibration. mystic formulas1 is used in some of the Kriyas of Kriya Yoga whilst using pranayama. /y slowing the breath down and circulating the breath in the arohan . awarhoan circuits, sometimes with the additional use of mantra you begin to vibrate 0activate1 the nadis .cha)ras . sushumna. You will start to perceive sounds 0nada1 or fre@uencies never heard before in your life coming from within you. Your range of perception increases. $ome good yoga practices that help to increase the awareness.sensitivity which is necessary to feel the spinal cord 0$ushumna1 is pranayama and Kechari mudra in particular. 'll Yoga practices have a bearing on $ushumna, but some are mild C others more direct. Yoga /idra which is another Tantric $adhana that has been e&tensively propagated by #aramahamsa $atyananda $araswati has a component of ,rotation of consciousness throughout the body- that directly stimulates C effects 0via sensory nerve messages to the brain 1 an area of the corte& called the #ostcentral Gyrus. This specific area of the brain receives sensory imput from specific areas of the body. The sensory C motor homunculus of the brain can be seen here in this animation http://www.cs.*ta.+i/4jh/hom*nc*l*s.html C this display below at the Iondon :atural Bistory 8useum shows the areas of the body and the amount of brain tissue designated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5ile:Sensory0and0motor0hom*nc*li.jpg. 's $wami $atyananda states- The neurosurgeon affects the body by stimulating the brain. The practitioner of Yoga :idra begins at the other end of the nerve pathway by heightening the awareness of the body, in order to stimulate the brain. The progressive movement of awareness through the parts of the body not only induces physical rela&ation, but clears all the nerve pathways to the brain, both those governing the physical activity, and those concerned with incoming information.- $wami $atyananda $araswati, Yoga Nidra /ihar $chool of Yoga >th ;d 1 = p"6*"1. There is no doubt in my mind that in both Yoga :idras body rotation and Tantric Kriya Yogas rotation of consciousness through 'rohanC 'warohan, that the dermatomes 0as well as the pranas1 are effected. Through these Tantric $adhanas which send abundant ,specific- sensory nerve imputs to the spinal cord 0which eventually, stimulates the central nervous system1 Pratyahara and (harana is induced allowing the consciousness to shine forth. Dith the emergence of the light you can then move further within. This is Spirit*al #vol*tion. /elow are my two favourite Yoga :idra 4?s which I recently purchased through http://www.ama6on.com. Dithout @uestion there is also subtle activation of the #rana C 4hi throughout the whole mind.body comple& which ultimately connects to the 8ahaprana. 'nyone can practice Kriya Yoga on the grounds that it is a universal science, the science of the soul. That means you can be a complete atheist, or a lover of God. It does not re@uire devotion to any religion, but persons from any religious faith can practice it irrespective of beliefs. Their also are no caste barriers, beggar or )ing, male or female, rich or poor, it matters not. 'll you need is the desire to e&perience more of a union with the cosmic Self. They are two poles of energy. Guru.adept transmits, and the disciple.aspirant receives. This is the only part of my physical body that I could feel, the line of the 8aha :adi and the energy moving between the two points. Three wee)s later I was tal)ing to this $wami physically. You may also see the subterranean movement of prana below the s)in moving up from mooladhara to swadhisthana, as if you are viewing your body from outside of it, and witnessing the constant movement of the rising prana entering the sacral area of $wadhisthana 4ha)ra from 8ooladhara 4ha)ra.
