ABSENCES & TARDIES

Please call in absences. (925-5480) We have to submit them daily and need to know where students are. If they are not phoned in, absences are unexcused. If it is after hours, the answering machines will be on to take your message. Your cooperation in this manner assists us in insuring the safety and the accounting of your children. If your child is late for school, he/she must stop in the office to sign in. Lunches are called in at 9:15 a.m., so if your child is going to be tardy, please call in to order lunch for them. SENDING LUNCH MONEY TO SCHOOL If you are sending lunch money to school, please be sure to label your envelope with your students first and last name as well as the name of their teacher. With 600 students here at Beagle we want to make sure the money gets put in the correct students account. Thank You!

MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

Our thanks to the following parents who volunteered to help keep the DIBELS testing days running smoothly: Erin Filipich, Amy Foltz, Lise Mitchell, Stephanie Morgan and Robin Sheren. Many students are arriving at school without proper outdoor clothing. Although we have had to stay inside recently because of wind chill temperatures, we ask that you work with us to make sure children are prepared to go outside for recess by wearing jackets, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens. We will go outside as soon as temperatures allow. We are approximately mid-way through the second trimester, so this is a great time to check your childs grades in PowerSchool (for upper elementary students) to check on their progress. Or, better yet, check the grades with your child! As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

COUNSELORS CORNER ~ Sandy Husted ~

Helping Your Child Handle School Stress School-related stress is taking its toll on children more than ever before. While most children handle the demands of school fairly well, some experience more stress than others. You can determine if your child is suffering school-related stress by watching for the following signs:

Set goals within a child's reach. This will help the child develop a feeling of competence. A child is not a miniature adult; don't demand perfection or compare one child to another. Love your child unconditionally.

decreased pleasure in everyday activities grouchiness fatigue acute sensitivity to criticism and adversity.

Inform your child's teacher and/or myself if he or she is showing signs of stress. Then, we can work together to support your child. This may not resolve all the stress your child feels, but it is a good beginning. ITS FLU SEASON!!! While Grand Ledge Public Schools is not experiencing an increase in absenteeism due to influenza, we want to make sure you know it is never too late to obtain your flu vaccine. When flulike symptoms arise, contact your doctor's office immediately as "Tamiflu" might be helpful in reducing symptoms. As always, good hand washing is essential in reducing exposure to any communicable disease, but especially influenza. If your child is exhibiting flu-like symptoms or running a fever, please keep them home and make sure they get plenty of rest. For further information on how to protect yourself and your children from the flu, visit CDC.gov. Comet Catcher Highlights James Trost was caught cleaning up a game that he didnt play at recess. Zane Nainan was caught helping another student get a drink. Phenix Smith was caught listening and helping during clean up time. Lauren Violante was caught being quiet during inside recess. Sienna Lake was caught getting started on her work right away. Thanks to all our students who demonstrate ROCKS behavior here at Beagle.

When stress develops, it is usually the result of the interaction of three factors: the demands of a situation, the abilities and resources that the child brings to the experience, and the support available to the child. Taken together, these three factors help explain why a child may feel stressed, and how much. The child who faces reasonable demands, who is confident and flexible and who has relaxed and supportive parents will have a better learning experience. Here are some ways you can help your child:

Listen to your child's concerns. Help your child master school tasks. Encourage your child to welcome change, not fear it. Stand back as your child tries to resolve problems even if you think of a better solution. Make sure your child has enough free time. This is essential for emotional growth and good mental health. Applaud success in all areas - not just in one particular subject or in sports. Praise the ability to make friends, express feelings, do chores, etc.
