with the s1uat snatch# I did a lot of re$s on the lifts wor"ing on my s$eed# I made a lot of misses in the s1uat snatch before I started clic"ing them in the right groove# %here has been many influence.s in my early career# (aul )nderson' %ommy &ono' I"e *erger' 8# Schemans"y to name a few# I always had my face in ,40 maga!ines studying the lifter and their training Marty - Joe, how did you get methods and so forth# interested in and started in weightlifting? How old and how Marty - How did your training much did you weigh? evolve as you got older? I was in a grocery store with my mother During the early years of my training I in 1958 and saw an old Strength & wor"ed mostly on the three /lym$ic ealth maga!ine on the mag rac"# I 0ifts# I did a few assistant e-ercises bought it and saw $ictures of %ommy such as *# & 9# S1uats' Dead 0ifts and &ono' (aul )nderson' Isaac *erger' Incline (resses# +inci' etc# I was ama!ed and the bug %he more I learned through reading hit me right in the face# I "new then Strength & ealth maga!ine and also that this is what I wanted to do# My Iron Man' I included other assistance brother +irgil also wanted to give it a movements to hel$ build my strength try# ,e did not come from a family that u$# had e-tra.s to $urchase a barbell set so I would "ee$ a constant loo"out for we decided to save what little money any additional info about training that we came across' lunch money' cutting would hel$ my lifting# grass' etc# ,e bought our first set of )s time went by for some years' my weights and decided to do some lifts came to a standstill# I needed bodybuilding as we needed to $ut on a something new that would give me a little muscle before tac"ling the "ic" in the butt and get me moving /lym$ic 0ifts# again' I had a tremendous amount of strength but was not using it in the Marty - Who was your first coach? most effective way# I "new that I How long had you trained and what needed to maybe change my techni1ue did you weigh when you first and do it fast# ,alter Imahara' my competed and at what weight? friend and teammate suggested trying I guess my first coach was my older the :9rog: Style in my Snatch# I tried it brother +irgil and I was his# ,e and it $roved to be ;ust what I needed studied S & mag# $istures and to get that Snatch moving again# It se1uence shots of lifters in the /lym$ic hel$ed me "ee$ the bar closer to my 2# I trained for about a year and half body' bringing in to my u$$er thigh before my first meet# My first meet was for the e-$losion and ;um$ in the last the Duval 3ounty igh School ,40 $art of the $ull# I used this style for 3ham$ionshi$s# I too" first $lace in the 1uiet some time and later I widdened 181 lb# class with lifts of 56641964556# my feet some to get that e-tra needed My weight was 175# leg in the first $art of the $ull# *ut' I did "ee$ my toes and "nees $ointed Marty - How did you train at first? out# What others influenced your training 0ifters need to sometimes e-$eriment in the early periods? to see what techni1ue is best for them# I trained mostly on the 2 lifts# I started <verybody does not have the same with the s$lit snatch and then alternated body structure' and what wor"s for one may not wor" for the other# Marty - How often did you train when you were at your best? My early years in training I would train 5 days $er wee"# I was young then and could recu$erate faster# ,hen I was at my best I would train 24= days $er wee"# I was lifting heavy loads and needed the e-tra time to recu$erate# I would cut bac" on assistance movements the closer the com$etition got# %hen I would wor" more on the /lym$ic 0ifts# Marty - Who were some of your training partners when you were at your peak? My brother +irgil when we trained at home or at the ># e was always there when I needed him# My other brothers ?%wins@ )lfred and 3lifford' were there hel$ing me also# Some of the other training $artners were ,alter Imahara' *ob *ednars"i' <rnie (ic"ett' Auss &ni$$ to name a few# Marty - Take us through your memories !"# $lympic Trials%&' think this is what you meant?( It was a very close nec" & nec" battle and came down to the last lift# ,/,' (ic"ett and *ednars"i didn.t want to ;ust give it to meB %hat was a tough one to win# I do admire a lifter that has the fight and will to succeed# I was tho' not going to denied again to ma"e the /lym$ic %eam# I had failed miserably in the 19C= %rials because of a frea" accident a few wee"s before the meet' resulting in me staying home# I did $ut u$ an effort anyway# Marty - My )re-Meet Training% )t the 8ationals a few wee"s before the %rials' I had trained considerable hard and was overtrained' ;ust that sim$le#I didn.t want to ma"e this mista"e again for the %rials# I cut bac" on some of the things I was doing in training# I also got more needed rest and watching my eating habits#
