Indians and built many trading posts. Dutch holdings in North America became known as New Netherland. Although they wanted Dutch colonists to live in New Netherland, they had a difficult time getting people to move to this part of the world.

The English also wanted to take over the territory the French controlled in North America. In 1754 a dispute over land claims in the Ohio Valley led to a war between the British and French on the North American Continent.
This led to the French and Indian War.

The English were able to defeat the French in 1763, and gained control of the Eastern half of North America. They held control until 1776 when the United States gained their independence.
