THE POEM THE DEAD CROW BY : A SAMAD SAID He saw a dead crow in a drain (the persona saw a dead crow in a drain near the post office) He saw an old man gasping for air (the pesona saw an old man who need to breathe clean air) And a baby barely able to breath (saw a baby who had problem to breath easily) In a crowded morning clinic (saw the old man and the baby at a clinic in the morning .The clinic is full with patients?.) The land is so rich (The country where the persona lives is wealty because it is rich with natural sources ?.) Why should we suffer like this ? (Even though the country is rich , the people are ill due to environment damage and pollution) I want clean air for my children . (Wants clean air which is free from pollution for the future generation ) I want the damned fools to leave the forest alone. (The persona wants the irresponsible who cut and burn down the trees to stop destroying the forest.) I want the trees to grow (The persona wants to see the trees to grow)

The rivers run free (The persona wants to see the river flow freely without water pollution) And the earth covered with grass (the persona wants to see the earth covered with green grass) Let the politician plan how we may live with dignity now and always. (Let the politician / authorities plan how the people in the country may live with dignity by taking steps to protected environment.)

A Brief Synopsis The poem is about the environment and what has become of it due to man s doings. In first stanza , a man see a dead crow in a drain near the post office .At the crowded clinic , he sees an old man trying to catch is breathe and a baby who almost could not breathe. He then says that the land is so rich ,but wonders why should people who live on this earth suffer in the way that the old man and the child do. In the second stanza , the poet wants clean air for his grandchildren .He wants people to leave the forests and not cut down the tree indiscriminately. He wants the trees and the rivers to be free from pollution and the earth to be covered with grass. In the last statement , he hopes that the politician would plan on how man can live with dignity at this point and forever. Background 1.Take thing that was happen to our environment .It has been taken for granted by man ,man uses if for his own purpose but has failed to take care of it. The poet express his opinion , he vividly express what really happen and thing happen to in habitants who are the victims of the assult including old man ,baby and a crow.

Setting. The setting of the poem is everyday places .It shows a drain near a post office , a clinic , an open land , the forest and the rivers. Persona The poem has 2 voices - Stanza one was written in the voice of the third person, this has more detached affect , more impersonal, as though he making a general observation. -Stanza two is written in the voice of the first person , which is the poets own voice. He is speaking very strongly from a personal point of view. He uses I and We to show that all of us are not spared from the polluted environment and therefore we should all unite to make the polluted environment and therefore we should all unite to make the world a more livable place. Themes (Perserving the environment ) Throughout the poem , element of nature are used as the subjects.Among them are the crow ,people ,air , a rich land , forest and rivers ,He implores people to do something about the environment. Moral values(caring for environment) In the second stanza especially , it talks people to do something about how the poet is demanding clean air for his grandchildren . If even a basic things like the clean air is not suitable for the children . Moral values are to be passed down to the future generation s .He can only pass this value of a pollution.Free environment down if he can make himself heard .If children see litter in the rivers , dead crows, people with breathing difficulties. Tone and mood The tone of the poem in the first stanza is one of anger . The poet is angry because he sees death all around when he knows that the land is rich and we should be living healthily . Instead , man has abused the environment and the old man is dying .The child cannot breathe and thee crow too is dead. The second stanza is demanding .He think that the people are foolish because of the way they treat the environment .He wants clean air , the forest to be alone , the rivers to be free from litter and the earth to be covered with grass.

Structure and Style . The poem is written in free verse .The poets style is conversational ,appealing to many people at all different levels of society. The language can be understood by the young and old alike. Literary devices Anology Anology is comparing two thing that share similar features , conditions or states .If the crow is dead in the drain ,it shows what a poor states that environment is in. Symbol The crow could be a symbol of pollution .The crow is black .The fumes and smoke from open burning are also same colour. The crow could be a symbol of the pollution that will one day be the cause of the death of many. Comparison The poet could also be drawing a comparison between the crow and humans. The crow and the humans are tough .But if the tough crow can die , one day the tough human too will die because of pollution . Contract The poet also uses a contrasting technique to make his point .He brings his massage across by using an old man and a baby .This shows that everyone , young or old ,is affected by the unhealthy environment. Personification The phrase rivers run freecould be a comment that the poet wishes that the river have no rubbish and litter to prevent them to flowing. Repetition The poet repeat I want three times in the last stanza. This show his insistence and demand for better things. He wants the people ,the politicians and the policy maker to do something about the way things are.
