PlacePro Student Users Guide

*Please note that these instructions will not work if you have used PlacePro previously. If you do not remember your login information, use the Forgot Password?" link available on the Student Login page. 1. 2. 3. Go to www.placeprocanada.com. Select Student to access the student login page. You will be prompted for a login, password, and access code. Your temporary login is your first initial + your last name + the last five digits of your id number. (e.g.: John Smith ID# 1234567 will login as JSmith34567). Your password is blank for your first login. The Access Code for University of Alberta Engineering students and alumni is: uofaeng. The next screen prompts you to accept the system usage agreement. If you do not accept this agreement, you will not be able to access PlacePro.

After accepting the agreement, you will be brought to the Personal Information section of the Profile tab:

Keep your PlacePro profile up-to-date with a current telephone number and email address. This will ensure that the Engineering Employment Centre can contact you to schedule interviews dont miss an opportunity because your profile is incomplete or outdated!

Setting Job Search Preferences


In order to view current postings in PlacePro, you must set your Job Search Preferences for the year in which you are seeking employment (e.g.: if you are seeking employment starting in May, you will select 2014) 1. Click on the Job Search tab to go to the Job Search page, then click View/Update Your Job Preferences. If you do not have any job preferences set, you will be brought to the Job Preferences page automatically. On the Job Preferences page click Add Job Preference. This will open a pop-up window. Select the following from the drop down menus: 3. 4. Employment Type: Employment Academic Unit: All Year: Year you are seeking employment for Section: Not Applicable Part/Full Time: Both

Click Add to close the pop-up window. When finished, click Save Profile at the bottom of the screen.

Managing Documents
To apply to opportunities in PlacePro, you will need to upload resumes, cover letters, transcripts, and other documents. You can manage your documents on the Portfolio tab. Uploading Documents Click on the Browse button to search for the documents you wish to upload. Select the document type (Resume, Transcript, Cover Letter, etc.) from the drop-down menu before uploading the document. As you upload multiple documents, they will appear in the Document(s) on file box.

Creating Portfolios Many opportunities advertised in PlacePro require that you submit multiple documents in an application package. To do this, you will need to create a Portfolio. 1. 2. On the Document Manager tab, click New Portfolio in the Portfolio(s) box. Choose the documents you wish to include in your portfolio. Click Next Step.

Number your documents to indicate what order you want them to appear in your portfolio. Click Next Step.

Name your portfolio. Use the company name and position title in the portfolio name to make it easy to identify when you apply to the position. To avoid confusion or missing documents, it is suggested that you create a portfolio for each application. You may modify your portfolio at any time. Applying to Opportunities Advertised in PlacePro


Complete instructions on how to apply to employment opportunities posted in PlacePro can be found in the job description for each opportunity. Be sure to read the job description carefully and ensure your application package contains all requested documents and is submitted according to the directions. NOTE: Clicking apply in PlacePro does not automatically submit your application. Please see below for details. One Step Applications require you to apply through PlacePro only. If you are asked to submit multiple documents (e.g.: cover letter, resume, & transcript), you will need to create a portfolio containing the documents before applying. 1. In the Job Search Results page, click the Apply checkbox for the posting you are applying to. Click Do not consider me for opportunities you are not interested in. To submit documents for the position you are applying to, select the correct portfolio from the drop-down menu. Click Save and Return to Search. Your application will be forwarded to the employer after the closing date listed in the posting.

Caution: If you make changes to your application portfolio prior to the closing date, these changes will be reflected in your application.

Two-step applications require you to apply through PlacePro as well as directly to the employer via email, fax, or using an online application tracking system. It is suggested that you create an application portfolio in PlacePro for each opportunity you apply to as a backup in the event that an organization loses some or all of the applications submitted to the position.

PlacePro Application Status Icons

Follow-up on your application will depend on how you submitted your application:

If you submitted a one-step application, contact the Engineering Employment Centre for more information. If you submitted a two-step application, contact the Human Resources department of the company you have applied to.

For traditional engineering students and all alumni, the icons in PlacePro do not accurately reflect the status of a posting or your application for employment with a company.

Interviews
During peak recruitment times in September and January, many companies choose to schedule interviews on campus for the convenience of students and alumni. Companies may contact candidates directly to schedule their own interviews, or they may have the Engineering Employment Centre organize interviews on their behalf. When the EEC is scheduling interviews, you will receive an email inviting you to login to PlacePro and select an available time slot from the interview schedule. Be sure to read the entire interview invitation email, as it may include important information about candidate briefing sessions, interview location and format, and requested additional documentation for candidates to bring with them to the interview. Scheduling interviews in PlacePro 1. To access the interview schedule in PlacePro, select the Interviews tab. You can review the job details by clicking on the Job title on the left. To select an interview time, click Schedule.

On the Schedule page, you can see all available slots. Click Schedule to select a slot. If you need to change your interview time, you can click Schedule on a different slot. If you receive an invitation to interview but wish to withdraw your name from consideration for a position, please notify the Engineering Employment Centre as soon as possible so we can pass this information on to the Company.

You can review your interview date and time at any time on the Interviews tab. The time can be changed until the deadline indicated in the invitation email from the EEC.
