Strategic Perspectives of MBD : Goodrich
Model Based Definition (MBD) represents the state of the art
in CAD software.
It is Goodrichs intent to take advantage of this advance in
CAD technology to reduce our costs, cut our time to market,
and to provide ever increasing service levels to our
customers.
Like all advances, Goodrich is aware that this one will have
its growing pains and risks, but failing to take the steps to
assimilate this capability will not allow us and our suppliers to
keep pace with the global aerospace industry.

Strategic Perspectives of MBD : Boeing
MBD/DPD allows savings in non-recurring
engineering cost, simplified manufacturing
operations and enhanced inspection processes
directly from the defining 3D model.
One of the new tools, CATIA V5, along with a
process called Model Based Definition, allows
engineers to design parts three-dimensionally
without the use of traditional two-dimensional
drawings that mechanics use to build parts and
assemblies.

There are many incompatible features between
CAD systems
There are multiple construction methods for the
same feature on a single CAD system
(e.g. hole)
Different CAD systems employ different
algorithms to compute geometry
Because of inherent differences in CAD
systems, translation introduces potential errors
